Tales from the Norse Legends
by Edward Ferrie (Author), Benjamin Soames (Narrator)
The tales of the Norse gods, of the giants, demons, trolls and dwarves, still have the power to fascinate more than a thousand years after they were first told. Here are the stories of the one-eyed god Odin, the all-seeing, who from his throne in Asgard the home of the gods, has to prepare for Ragnarok, the final conflict between good and evil. There are tales too of Tyr the god of war, of the cunning Loki, of Thor the mighty thunder god and a host of others. These retellings of the old tales are given extra dramatic perspective by the music of Mahler, Greig, Smetana, They come to life as never before.

This story explains human nature perfectly. We try to do away with things we fear and then wait for it to come back and bite us.

this needs to be turned into a movie or cartoon, with this narrating it.

Has it occurred to anyone else that the story of Fenrir at Ragnarok killing Odin is something of a self fulfilling prophecy? At the time of his binding, Fenrir had not really caused too much trouble, but because Odin heard a prophecy that Fenrir would kill him, he tricked the wolf by lying to him. So after god knows how many centuries of waiting and thinking about what happened, he struck revenge on the one who imprisoned him. What would have happened if Odin said that he didn't believe the wolf would do him any harm?

came to the same thought when i first heard the story! if they didnt piss Fenrir off mabye he wouldn't have gone on a rampage during Ragnarok. on similar but different story, because i've been reading the comments, it is like that story in the bible i believe it was called "The Last Supper" where Jesus says something like who ever i don't give bread to will betray me, so the guy that gets no bread is mad that Jesus thought he would betray him so he betrays him. Gods, keep screwing themselves.

tigerspirit1917 There is no such thing as a self-fulfilling prophecy in Norse Mythology. Odin knows about Ragnarok at the beginning of time. All prophecies and all things are all predestined

Odin heard the prophecy from a Volva (seeress) he had spoken to after waking her from death's sleep. It wasn't a Norn, or Frigg, or anyone reputable. It was a Volva who was torn from her resting place. It's entirely possible that Odin condemned himself. If you'll recall he had to gain wisdom from Mimir's well, before that he didn't know much. His is a journey of understanding. Wisdom is never inherent, and to think so is arrogant.

The god must be very weak! They had to play unfair and deceive Fenrir just to bind him. I feel sorry for the pup.

He was the father of the wolves that chase the sun and moon, he will be the one to kill Odin during Ragnarok, he is the size of a dragon! Of course you have to play unfair to deal with something of this proportion.

It’s a story of self sacrifice for the greater good... fenrir would have destroyed asgard and killed all in it, in order to prevent that, they knew he was smart and had to trick him in order to prevent him from killing them all

I would like to think that throughout history, some people had heard this myth and felt a certain satisfaction knowing the final chapter involves Fenrir getting his revenge... But maybe not, since that also means the end of all things. You narrate very well.
@tigerspirit1917
@tigerspirit1917 9 лет назад
It may be the end of all things, but it does show that everything comes full circle. You can only kick over other people's sand castles for so long, before one of them comes and kicks over yours.

Even if Odin had Fenrir tied up and bound, fate is fate and it is said that during Armageddon Odin will fight Fenrir and lose. So even if Odin bound Fenrir he would eventually escape, whatever the way may be. Fate is fate.

@DarkEcoMaiden
@DarkEcoMaiden 12 лет назад
I've thought the same thing for a while now. Fenrir may be Loki's son, but either way, he didn't do anything wrong before he was bound like that. Last time I checked, NONE of Loki's "deadly offspring" did anything wrong but Odin still assumed the worst.

Why are there no movies of Norse tales. We have plenty based on the Greco-Roman gods, but these are by far superior! I want a film about Thor that doesn't involve him being a Marvel super hero, but rather the God Of THUNDER!
@tremblingcolors

Fate I'm sure took into account that the prophecy that Fenrir would eat Odin at Ragnarok would be found out by Odin and that he and the other Gods would in an attempt to prevent that fate chain Fenrir. Fate would laugh at the Gods then, knowing that it was because of the chaining of Fenrir that Fenrir would so hate and thus kill Odin at Ragnarok. So him finding out about his own death at the hand of Fenrir was all part of Fate to begin with.

"The first step in avoiding a trap is knowing of it's existence." How is something that doesn't exist get gathered and used? A game has defining details. A prediction is but of one possibility. Face the future with a respectful fear and hopefully through understanding and cooperation a trap can be avoided. Trickery...Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first learned to deceive ourselves.

Personally, I don't blame Fenrir for eating Odin at Ragnarok. From what I can tell he never actually did anything wrong besides be a huge wolf/the son of Loki - who was only described as evil after the Christians had their say. So, if you were bound, chained and then stabbed you'd be pretty Gods damned pissed too.
@LoverWitch
@LoverWitch 11 лет назад
This is so tragic. Fenrir was thier pet at one time. Was he evil? Was it in his nature to be destructive? Or did he have free will or any desire to be creative or protective? Where was Loki during all this? If indeed he is so evil, why didn't they kill him when he was the size of an ox or shire? All this started because Odin learned his demise would be at the claws of Fenrir. But if he told someone, would that change destiny? Would Fenrir decline to destroy one of his adopted family?

Not listening to the gods and Odin in particular is enough rebellion to be punished, he's like the only creature who dares to?? So of course he cant let this go unpunished and wait until its too late. Evil is evil in norse mythology and you cant change it, if you pure you are good if you are poluted you are evil. Cant change what theyre made of

@JesusChristlovesu1 Nope, you're not the only one. I have a soft spot for both Fenrir and Loki. Odin just... didn't understand them, their need to be free. Because in both cases, what did he do? Bind them, alone (and tortured Loki...), and they went crazy and decided to take it out on the Aesir. And I think you're right; if people had just been a little nicer to both of them, maybe things wouldn't have turned out the way they did?

From the lore, Fenrir does not show much character except in cunning and bloodthirst. I just wonder if he's supposed to be like that? Is that just his nature? Or could something had been done to restrict his growth. Granted comparing Fenrir to ordinary wolves and dogs is no comparison at all. I just can't help wondering if things could've been different.
