My favorite viking is nameless, it's a battle story where the vikings were losing and being pushed back by the anglo-saxons across a bridge but one Viking let the rest of his "battle brothers(?)" go while he stood his ground. He fought the anglo-saxons single handedly and the only way they were able to defeat him apparently was one of the saxons went under the bridge and slammed a spear through the bridge into this dudes nuts, and finally died. Pretty damn epic story, Vikings FTW!

My favorite viking is Sigmundur Brestirson. He was the norwegian king's right hand man. In battle he would throw up his sword and shield and switched armss, when he got tired so that he could fight tirelessly on. Sorry for typos.

We still live. I'm of Viking ancestry myself. I'm a computer programmer in modern society, and reasonably civil.

Fun fact 1#. Óðinn ribbed out one off his eye to feed it the "miðgarðsorms" (middle garden worm) so he could drink from a well, after wards he could write poems. FF 2#. When Höður accidentally killed Baldur with a mistletoe (only thing that could harm Baldur), given to him by Loki. Æsir told the world to cry for Baldur, for it was the only way to get him back from Níflheimum. Loki chanced him self into a old women and refused to cry for Baldur. So he had to stay in Níflheimum.

Harald Hardrada, King of Norway nearly conquered all of England. Orkney Islands, Iceland, Greenland, York (england) and other parts of Ireland and Scotland were under Norwegian monarchs, and thus influenced by it.

Fascinating material!

Harald Hardrada, first battle as 15 years old in a Norwegian civil war, was wounded and came on the loosing side. Had to flee east, become the chief of the Varangian guard for the byzantine empire. Taking many cities and catsles for the empire. Then went home and claimed the throne, ruled Norway and Denmark having many battles against Danes fighting for freedom. Then lead and invation of brittain and died at standford bridge by an arrow in the wind pipe. Viking age died with him.

William the Conqueror was by no means a viking. It's true, the Normans originally started out as a very mixed force of vikings who raided, and ultimately settled Normandy from late 800 through 900, but by 1066 the Normans had their own unique "Norman" culture.

Their brutality was exaggerated by the only literate people in Europe (the priests and monks) whose churches and monasteries the Scandinavians were raiding, so naturally they exaggerated the "savage, barbarian" nature of the raiders. They were more opportunists who could fight yes, but that doesn't mean they went out of their way to cause destruction.

horns on viking helmets comes from a english writer in the 1800s i think and yes, you are correct.. never ever would someone do something as dumb as putting horns on their helmets.. Horns on helmets leads to guaranteed injury. 1: You lead the attack INTO your head 2: Any attack vs head area can hook a horn and break your neck and so on...

For knowing so much about Viking and Norse mythology it seemed like a mere pun to wear a helmet with horns as it is one of the biggest stereotypes about Vikings ... Lol

I can hardly count them. I liked Leif Ericcsen for discovering the New World. But then I also liked the Varangian guards of the Byzantine Empire. Even now, Scandinavia is the best place on Earth to live. Long live the Nordic peoples (I am an Indian-American).

I believe vikings sometimes had wings on their helmets. Maybe the Christians at the time thought the wings were devils horns. They do tend make that mistake a lot.

me and my brother have been arguing about this for a while, he thinks that William the conqueror was still technically a viking when he invaded England, but he had already founded Normandy and converted to Christianity so he is no longer a viking, he is a Norman right? what do you think?

This video is embarrassingly wrong. It's full of mistakes and tourist myths. Just about everything the presenter said was wrong. I'd usually take my time to list them one by one but the whole video is a litany of errors and misrepresentations.

I'd argue the Assyrians or the Nazis, or the various steppe cultures throughout the history were much more brutal than the vikings, if you're looking at the "most brutal people in history".

favorite viking? well, i don't know much about the "real" ones, but my favorite fictional viking is thorgil, from the book-series "The See of trolls"

Vikings is called brutal because they were good in the battles. They discovered North America even before Columbus. They took over alot of places when they lived and that's why they are called ''brutal''. I know what you mean.

Wait,, I always was told that Viking was related to the word Wrecking,, or in “Maritime”, to plunder a ship gone aground or wrecked. So to “Go a`Viking”, would be closer to an adventurer looking for spoils, “Gone a Wreaking”. Perhaps this accounts for the confusion of the V and W. @CaptainMetalwing There is no archaeological evidence or historical record of vikings with wings on their helms that I have ever heard of. In fact only one viking helmet has ever been found, and it has no horns or wings.

@Shiby102 Archeologists have found proof on viking settlements in north america from about year 1000 after christ, and columbus reached amerika in year 1492.. i really don't know much about the templars so you could surely be right :)

No, thas actualy a myth, in Sweden we got 32 runnstenar (runestones) that talks about going east and 26 going west. It's the same about Denmark.
