Norse Paganism | The Afterlife 

I literally died the 14th of November 2019, I don’t remember being transported to a major hospital in another State nor airlifted to another hospital in my own State. I do remember finding myself sitting at the end of a massive wooden table with four muscular long hair men dressed in tunics, the man sitting at the other end of the table said to the other three as he looked at me, “she has to go back”.....it was and is an incredible amazing journey. 🥰

The afterlife will have a great feast for us all brother!

I don't think Valhall is a reward. You have to fight and die daily and serve in ragnarok, destined to lose. Valhall is more of a duty for the most elite warriors, Hel is fine for the rest of us, we can be with our ancestors and farm and feast and live well. The nutcases like me who yearn for battle would proudly accept the duty of Valhall but not as a reward, more of an ultimate worthy task.

It's crazy to see how much the "Christian vision" influenced the old literature... To imagine that, even with all this, we still know that Hel has GOLD on the floor is something that makes me wonder what we actually don't know... Keep on with this amazing work, my brother! When I was a small child I always had the feeling of being protected by someone. I still feel that way today. I can't remember it myself, but my mother said that I once said that Baldur would look after me. I always have a warm, fatherly feeling when I think of Baldur.

I woke with the sunrise and the call of a raven outside my window.. I’m not sure of any meaning but value the experience watching the sun rise and hear the birds crow

I love this! Coming from a Christian background, I always had a problem with a God that would condemn his people to a horrible place even if they were good people. Its so nice to know that this faith has no 'bad place' in the afterlife, and thats not even the whole point anyway!

Great video Jacob. I want to go to the mountain in Iceland. Yesterday I asked Odin a question I had never asked Him before, and then I pulled a rune out of my bag that I had never pulled out before as the answer.(no such thing as coincidences) I asked Allfather: Which God watches over me the most? Who is the closest around me? (Because I feel him/her) The rune I got was: Ingwaz. It's Freyr. I did not expect that. So for two days I've been researching Him heavily. Well, it makes perfect sense now that I know much more about Him. His qualities are in perfect harmony with my life and happiness..I know Allfather gave me the truth again. I love Him, and all of Them so very much.♥️

If I remember correctly from the Havamal, Odin said it was better to die a well lived life surrounded by sons to bury you, rather than dying on a battlefield.

After Odin spoke my name my fear of death and the future faded into the night and I was free.

Norse beliefs on afterlife’s were probably varied from region to region.

I am a Norse pagan and Odin found me when I was 5 years old I was in a really dark place and he saved me from many dark places I have been in my life I have been a fully Norse pagan for the past 10 years and Odin and Thor will always be my gods this is the true faith

I am just finding your videos thanks to a good friend of mine. I am a Marine Corps Vet who grew up in a Christian family. Since my time in service my views on life, death, and the afterlife has moved away from the Christian ties that I grew up with. Until today I could never place what was actually in my mind. I am looking forward to watching more of your videos and discovering the true connections with the gods that I have felt and didn't know where to place them.

I like your approach. It is hard to wrap your head around with so little information to go on. One thing this faith has taught me is not to fear death, even if I am fated to go to Hel. Like you said there are many realms to Helheim. For example, Baldur did not die in battle, he was murdered by Loki, so he resides in Hel until Ragnarok and I doubt he is being mistreated. I would be honored to sit in Hel's hall, and maybe meet a few loved ones that I have read about in my genealogy study.

I had a very similar experience when my grandmother who raised me passed. I refused to come cry at the casket with the others because that's not grandma, she wouldn't want us crying.

First of all, I found your channel few weeks ago, when Allfather revealed his identity in front of me, as my patron (I feel his presence since years, but I thought it's my grandfather, but I didn't dared to ask who is it-because I felt this energy is fatherly, but waaay more powerful, and made me a lil' scared. I always say that, if I'm not ready for the answer-dont ask it. When I was ready, and I did asked, he was clear as the sky), and I'm bingewatching your videos since:) Secondly, I'm thinking about this subject since you uploaded this video, but didn't wanted to comment yet, wanted to thinking about it... I'm a practicing witch (not wicca), and with this craft a lot of cleansing, spiritwork come - also I felt, heard, saw ghosts/spirits since my childhood, so for me, its obviously there is something after death..but what? I'm also a Hungarian, and I tried to study our pantheon, the ancient Hunnic religion, gods, creatures, but christians did very well job, and almost destroyed it completely. BUT, there is something, which is common in Huns and Mansi&Khanty (closest language relatives to Hungarians) people's belief: there is NO less gods, only more: that's complicate, but I try to be short as I can: after a person die, his/her spirit can be more and more powerful with people (family, friends, etc.) who continue to talk to him, make food&drink sacrifices, offerings, etc. With time and with "worshippers" even regular Joe can be a god in after few centuries for example, because his spirit can harvest A LOT of energy, he can be more and more powerful. This kinda the answer to how can a spirit be so harmful, so strong: fear is a huge energy, and they're feeding from it, so with time they can be a poltergeist-ish, "demonic" thing. So, what if the Christian god is actually existing? Just like Odin, Thor, Skadi, etc. for us, Ukko for Finnish people, Perun, Mokosh for Slavs, also there's a lot native American, Hawaii, etc. spirits, gods. Maybe these deitys chose persons for whatever reasons, and for them (for us) there is that, their afterlife. Maybe christian heaven and hell actually existing for those, who believs it-that deity, "God/Jesus" reaching out to them, and taking them to there after death. Also with Nors, Slavic, etc. gods and afterlifes. Maybe in that moment when we die, our god will come and take our soul with them. Now here's a big question: why are so many wondering spirits? Even if they died in violent death, or can't said goodbye, have unfinished business, etc.-why their gods, guardian spirits didn't take them? What if we'll have the same faith? I thinking about this a lot, and I get one result (for myself at least): I didn't want wondering after death, also not fearing death-that's -as you said- a fact, it will happen. The only thing I know now, but also will ask for it: that Odin will take my soul: if into Valhalla, then there (even if I'm not longing that much for the real Valhall) I will accept it, and be honoured and do my best. If he will take me to the Hel..well, it looks like a Nordic place, with houses, fuckin' pastures, brewing beer and stuff-I would LOVE that, and accept it. Or whereever he think it'll be good for me, and for the bigger picture of his: I will accept it, and now I have to keep my faith in that: as much as I feel his love, guidiance, protection in my life, I'll feel it in m death, and trust him to know it better (damn, he knows everything better). I also believe in reincarnation, tho I don't really get it, what's the goal of it (I dont't think to be "buddha", to reach enlightment and purity, but who knows...yeah, Odin..), I kinda remember my past life, and I would love to NOT be born again, just really, take a final rest. But I think we only can do that, what you said also: learning, practicing my craft, be a good person, try to make Father's proud, and avoid Nidhögg;) Sorry if I'm rambling, English isn't my native, and I could philosophing about this subjects for HOURS, and hard to make it short:D Love your channel, can't wait the new videos. I was homeless on the streets of Dublin for 16 years and I nearly died and Odin came to me and the allfather told me to get up and change my life and ever since then I have been freed from darkness Odin will always be my god and Thor will always be my god to I always be a proud Norse pagan

I've only started my path towards the Gods recently. I remember I got an urge to start watching videos on Norse Paganism (Yours which i actually found) and as I went through this video I felt a sudden touch. A presence. A brown humanoid figured suddenly behind me, touching my shoulder and saying "You will be fine" And i just remember this instant feeling of peace and security that i simply started crying. I finally just....didn't fear my own death. And growing up in a christian household ( and i did this for 15 years to keep my mother happy. I'm only 25) i had always feared death. There was nothing in the religion that brought me security from it. But that sudden calling started my journey to the Gods and now so many things just started happening. I don't think nature has ever excited me this much in my life. I don't think I've ever felt so free. I watched this video for the first time maybe a month ago. I didn't say this then but I feel like i should now. I only wish i could know which God called to me. Who woke me up and even came to assure me?

I use to ride our city transit system all the time (I have a vehicle now) but I was wearing my Valknut one day on the bus and this guy asked me about it and so I was telling him a little about myself, I use the term Norse Hedgewitch, which I've gotten a few weird looks in the Wiccan community. It was almost my stop when this guy asked me - do Vikings have a hell - meaning something similar to the Christian hell. Without even really thinking I had this pop into my head and I told him..'oh yes, you still go to Valhalla, but instead of feasting and celebrating with others....you're part of the janitorial staff.' He thought that was cool and I got off the bus. Yes, I know it probably wasn't exactly what I should have told him, but seriously, I'd think there are few things worse than the thought of cleaning up Viking vomit for the rest of enternity. Yes?

Thank you for this lovely and informative video. I absolutely agree with your last point about seeing your grandfather after he died - I’m a nurse so as you can imagine, I see a lot of people die. You can see after they die that their soul is missing. Where that soul goes, who knows, as you say. But it definitely goes somewhere. And that gives me great peace.

The last few years I've been transitioning....I've asked the gods for wisdom about paganism..I'm still new. I've got so much from this channel...some of what I've learned from him is very comforting, especially as a former christian myself too. My aunt died 2 days ago. It was sad. She was just 58 yrs. Old. Cancer from smoking & drinking. She found out 1.5 weeks ago & died very very quickly. She laid down for the 1st time after battling pain for months , she got proper meds. And she just simply closed her eyes & she was gone :'/. It happened just like that & that quick. She just found out she had cancer.

Thank you for sharing your petition to Odin at the beginning. I can't explain why but it brought me to tears. I am brand new in my path of Norse Paganism but I have never felt more in touch with myself since discovering and I cannot wait to grow closer to the gods.

I’m scared one day, then calm and happy about this subject the next. I’m young, and I don’t fully understand things that I should. One thing that has concerned me, is that my family does not have the same faith as me. When I die, wherever I may end up, I will most likely be alone. I don’t want to be alone..no matter where I am the most important thing to me is being with my family....Correct me if I’m wrong. Maybe my ancestors will be there, but they will be ancestors from a very very long time ago.

Exactly how I felt about my Dad when I saw him dead..I kissed him goodbye while he was warm...then as his body cooled and became cold I knew he was gone...no more pain...freedom...its an amazing feeling to share with him..

I read a passage somewhere that stated that hel is a place people go as sort of a 'sorting grounds' and from there they either become part of the ancestors, or go to valhalla or folkvangr. But again, we won't really know until we die.

What, I was just yesterday looking online to see which bourbon I should try, and well found out about Four Roses and bookmarked it. And now I see you have a bottle in this video, haven't had coincidences like this in a long time. :O

I wouldn't call myself a Christian or pagen or.... idk what I would call myself. Most of my beliefs are what I've interpreted from religious books or if I like things from story's. And when it comes to an afterlife. What made it easier for me was not to worry about it. And whenever in a Christian book they mentioned the kingdom of heaven I dobt imagine it as an actual place. I imagine it as that feeling you get when you help someone and they give you gratitude and you have that amazing feeling for the rest of the day. And I look at hell that same way. When you do something you know is morally bad or do some selfish act that bad feeling you get is a part of hell. I just see these things as... if you like things and want to try them out. Theyre for the living. If there is an afterlife im sure they have their own things too we can try out

I love that towards the end you mentioned the emphasis on life. In Christianity people are living to die, they are focused on the rewards after life. But in the old ways, the rewards are in living, in the day to day, and I believe that will only continue into the afterlife.

I was the same with my grandad's funeral, he was a World War II veteran. I didn't want to see his body as I felt it wasn't him. I did my own thing after the burial, with a lilly flower. My goddess is always Skadi as I am strongly connected to dogs and the snow. To me life is the seasons, life and souls regenerate. energy can not be destroyed, soul's energy can't be destroyed. I believe your guardian deity will guide you on their own thoughts of the afterlife. Skal my pagan brother!

I've read references to Bilskirnir (Thor's hall) being the place where craftsmen such as blacksmiths, potters, woodworkers go after death.

So, for example, if a father dies in battle and Odin chooses him to go to Valhalla, and his son later dies at sea and goes to another place, will families not be together because of how they died? I’m just curious?

It's very interesting that you said hell can just be the grave because Hebrew lexicons support that idea. Hebrew word for hell is sheol and one of the definitions is "the common grave of mankind". But the church for some reason don't point this out

A few years ago when I was rediscovering my spirituality and coming out of my shell more religiously and questioning my Catholic upbringing I often meditated on the thought of death and would think of many theories. It really refreshing to hear I'm not the only one who thinks there soul is released during a cremation, ever since I had this epiphany I wanted to be cremated and since I became a norse pagan I've wanted it even more so.

The Kingdom of the Norse which includes "Norway" "Sweden" and "Denmark" are very much related to the Ancient Vedic culture of India as seen in their cosmology and as seen in their pantheon of gods of which the Supreme was "Odin" whose name seems to have its source in the Ancient Sanskrit language. ~ The Norse home of the gods is Asgard which seems to be Sanskrit and the King of Asgard is "Odin" a name which is from "Woden" the Old Saxon god of the wind. "Woden" is the Indo/euro root "Wa" meaning to "blow" its source being the Sanskrit "Va" meaning to "blow" as seen in the Vedic god of the wind "Vata" and "Vayu". ~ "Woden" was originally known as the German storm god "Wode" a simple evolution as the Sanskrit "V" becomes "W" and the Sanskrit "T" becomes "D" hence the Vedic god of the wind "Vata" becomes the German god of the wind "Wode" which then becomes the Old Saxon "Woden" immortalised as "Wednesday" the day of Woden and a name which seems to become "Odin" the god of the Norse and the King of Asgard. ~ "Frigg" is the wife of "Odin" the Queen of heaven and the goddess of love, her name meaning "beloved" "loving" "wife" its source being the Sanskrit "Priya" meaning "beloved" "loving" "wife" and just as "Woden" is immortalised as "Wednesday" the goddess "Frigg" becomes "Friday". ~ "P" becoming a European "F" is a common theme which is seen in the Sanskrit "Panca" becoming "five" the Sanskrit "Pluta" becoming "float" the Sanskrit "Pitr" becoming "father" and here we find the Sanskrit "Priya" becomes the Norse goddess "Frigg". ~ And so we have "Asgard" which is Sanskrit and we have "Odin" which is related to Sanskrit and we have his wife "Frigg" which is definitely Sanskrit, all of which reflects the Sanskrit and Vedic influence upon the Ancient civilisation of the Norse. ~ "The primitive West Europeans had called the god “Wodenaz” this later developed into Wuotan (Old High German) and Wodan (Old Saxon). It is generally believed that he was first thought of as a sky deity, perhaps a wind or storm god with great wisdom and with some sort of powers over life and death." Buckland's Book of Saxon Witchcraft - Raymond Buckland. ~ "This may be evidenced by the derivation of Wodenaz from an Indo-European word, parent also of the Sanskrit vata and the Latin ventus, both meaning 'wind'. The edda book you have is a christianized version. Try the Asatru edda or The Norse Gods book by Johan Egerkrans for pre Christian. Neil gaimans is great as well. I love your videos brother. Hail the Gods and Goddesses! Glad to see more pagan s especially in United states.

There are many traditions where there is more than one world or afterlife option. It is interesting to learn more about this. I am looking into being more norse based in my practice. I'm more of an ecelectic witch and I feel a pull to freya lately.

Very interesting. I’m learning so much and am impressed by your honest approach to the research. I have studied the Bible in the same way and found no evidence of an ever burning hell. There are hints to Sodom as the example of hell because fire rained down on them for their sins. As we know, Sodom does not burn today so everlasting fire and brimstone is a religious context of using fear to control rather than an honest study of the text.
