In 1838, the Cherokee Indians were forced to give up their remaining lands in the east, migrating to what is now Oklahoma. Over 4 thousand died on the journey known as the Trail of Tears, but some Cherokee remained behind, hiding in the mountains of Appalachia. They survived as a people and are now taking steps to make sure their language survives as well. VOA's Susan Logue visited the tribe known as the Eastern Band of Cherokee in North Carolina and has a report

@milekrizman That small of a population is actually very alarming. Many were killed from sickness and disease. What many people are unaware of as well is in the American Southeast, Natives were originally used as slaves before the Africans were imported.
@mindqueen2127
@mindqueen2127 7 лет назад
GentileJedi so that changes everything....the fact that they were the slaves before Africans were imported. I have seen many pictures and drawings of the indigenous people and I'm sorry they don't look like the people in this video. This would mean that there are more descendants of the Cherokee than what people think. because now people have to look at the fact that there are some people who are NOT who they have been told they were. Too many people walking around the Americas looking like the Indigenous Americans who were the slaves being taken to Africa, Europe, Asia from the Americas...Columbus kidnapped many and took them back to Europe in 1492. They did not look like what one sees today as "1st peoples".

carol shoemaker wrong.....a lot of us aren't on a Dawes roll or any other roll. One can find the descendants of the Cherokee who didn't get pushed out west, right here today up and down the East Coast and abroad. Many of us are NOT "as mixed" as the "other" Cherokees and our families always told us who we are. It was "outside" sources that told us some thing else.
@milekrizman
@milekrizman 13 лет назад
@JOSUE1987 Of course I know that. We in Europe have couple of dozen of languages - official. You in America have only imported European languages as official - English, Spanish, French and Portuguese (Brazil). There are countries like Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay, Mexico who have some indigenous languages as co official beside Spanish, but these are exemptions.

Ok, I have to comment re:the real Cherokees and NA being black. Native people are many colors, and honestly you can have someone as pale as Elvis and dark as Snoop Dogg both be Cherokee. The Cherokees also had slaves, and there was a lot of intermixing happening. Also intermarriage with whites. Plus, if someone in a tribe was killed during battle, sometimes prisoners would be taken in and "placed" into that dead persons spot in the clan. Gosh, I read recently that all of the different groups were enslaving each other (though the vast huge majority was African people,to be very clear and to not minimize), thus admixture happened. Nobody was alive during the time pre colonization, so sure,we cannot say for sure what the original inhabitants looked like, but there have been paintings done that should be fairly representative. All of this to say is that if an African Americansays they are Native, and they have a lineage and/or DNA to prove it,then they are. Also goes for Asian, White, whatever.

Theres so much dang room in this country more then enough for cultural regeneration and coexistence. Yet here we are with only 300 fluent speakers from a once proud and thriving, united nation. Number that low speak of oppression and massacre from the U.S no nation that resilient, adaptive and renowned as the Cherokee simply "teeters off". They deserve their own country like they almost had before Andrew Jackson and his team of racists illegally vetoed the Cherokee concession for statehood. SO MUCH ROOM IN THE BEAUTIFUL SMOKEY"S YET THERE ARE ONLY 300 SPEAKERS. THERE ARE TINY CRAMPED AND VULNERABLE COUNTRIES ALL OVER THE WORLD WITH MANY TIMES MORE NATIVE SPEAKERS THEN THAT. COME ON YOUR HERITAGE IS HUGE YOUR LEGACY HUGE, YET YOUR PRIDE FALTERS DOWN TO 300?! THE CHEROKEE CAN DO BETTER THEN THAT DESPITE THE INJUSTICE WROUGHT ON THEM. SAVE THE FLAME WHILE ITS ALIVE DONT WAIT FOR IT TO DIE.

Correct if wrong; it is my understanding those called American Indians migrated from Asia and crossed the Bering straight then down to South America. That would make them a mix of Japanese/mongol/chinese. Of course with intermarriage non of us "pure" anything anymore. Veggie dna soup we are.
@GuitarHeroKingz1
@GuitarHeroKingz1 8 лет назад
That's incorrect... "American Indians" are the so called African American/Cooper Colored People the European Invaders found here on this land in 1492. We are the Indigenous People of Turtle Island AKA America. The "Native Americans" are the Siberians who came across the Bering Straight. They're not Indigenous at all...

Laurel Nord wrong the Cherokee originally came from the great lakes region and were taken slave and forced away by the English.moved to the south east Tennessee north and south Carolina parts of Georgia. Then forced from there to Oklahoma. Its very disrespectful to say we are from Asian descent. We have nothing against Asian but we are not Asian.you want to learn the next vacation you take come to Cherokee north Carolina. Not only beautiful but the truth of the Cherokee is there.

Is Cherokee official in North Carolina? Well, it should be! It is a shame that Russian federation is giving greater rights to their indigenous people then USA! USA has always had policy of 'Melting po' which is CULTURAL IMPERIALISM OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE! We should give official status to every Native language. That means signs on Cherokee, schools on Cherokee, documents on Cherokee, radio and TV stations on Cherokee...etc.

I just found out I'm related to a Cherokee Indian that lived over 150 years ago...I was shocked because I didn't know one of my ancestors was a Cherokee Indian from this particular tribe in North Carolina which is just one of 3 federally recognized Cherokee Indian tribes in USA the other 2 Cherokee Indian tribes are both in Oklahoma...I'm actually proud to be related to the Cherokee Indians now that I just recently found out... now I'm not sure what percentage of Cherokee Indian blood I have running through me...I plan on taking on Ancestry DNA test to find that out... because I do know you need a certain amount and percentage Indian blood in you to be officially apart of the tribe and be able to live on an Indian reservation with your native ancestors which might be possible descendents of the Cherokee Indian I just found out I'm related to...I still might have Cherokee family members thats alive today Thats also related to same Cherokee ancestor I am...any way I'm going to do some more research on my family's history and try to find out more about my Cherokee ancestor and try to trace her and her children and other generations after them and hopefully once I piece together my Cherokee family tree I'll find out who I'm related to in this modern day and age that I'm related to possibly more like Cherokee cousin's thats currently alive today that also decend from the same Cherokee ancestor I do
@extraterrestrial4287

Do not be shocked if there is no Native American DNA in the test results. My maternal grandmother was born in 1912 and said she was American Indian all her life. Cherokee. She passed when I was 9. She wasn't white and wouldn't need to introduce herself as Native American for it was obvious. Her parents and grandparents were born and are buried nearby as well. So my aunt did DNA and it came back Pakistani. No offence to Pakistani People, if she was Pakistani we would be proud to have Pakistani heritage but she wasn't Pakistani. We laughed but now it isn't funny. I can't say whether it was an error or deliberate but given the history of atrocities against Native American people and efforts to erase their identity I wouldn't be surprised if theres a nationwide effort to suppress knowledge of American Indian ancestry Do you realize how many people in USA have Native American ancestors and don't even know. And they may never know because of faulty DNA results. They would be proud to know and they should know.

Perhaps if everyone's great grandmother had not of been bedding down with white men for blankets, beads and booze. At one time they were a numerous people whose villages stretched all through the southern Appalachians, but early on they formed alliances and marital relationships with those who would go on to take their homelands. They even assisted General Andrew Jackson in defeating their Creek friends only to be later removed by him during his presidency. Some reward they got, eh?

I was privileged to visit the Cherokee village and museum in NC several years ago. I found it informational and most interesting. I hope by whites showing support for the Cherokee it will demonstrate that many whites do have respect for others. They cannot make up for past injustice, but they CAN move forward in a spirit of harmony. The Cherokee I met on that visit were most kind and willing to share with me what they knew. Many Cherokee have served honorably in our military.

Of course it was good, bringing livestock and technology to Indians, but it also had bad effect - weaker cultures were wiped out by European colonizers. I am not for America as it was in 1492., because that's impossible. I just want to say that we should respect heritage of Indians - languages and customs. And give better opportunities to poor tribes like Pine ridge in Dakota.

I've forgotten most I knew because I don't live among other Cherokee. So there lies the dilemma~ how can one be Cherokee without the rest of tribe, yet the tribe is so non-accepting of those whose grandparent screwed up and didn't keep their membership with the EBCI? My ancestors were the Eastern Cherokee. I’m glad effort is being made to preserve the Cherokee language. I have a book of the language to pass down to future generations. Some of my ancestors were from Cherokee NC and the others from NC lived on the southwestern part of NC.

I have to say, I am not American Indian but I think this is so cool! There are not many Indians were I live and many people seem to think that they are dying out or that there are not very many left. I hear though, that the American Indian population is growing and it is great to hear about programs like this. I hope that, someday, the Cherokee language comes back into everyday use in the tribe.

@Gentilejedi In Europe we have nation states. I am aware that USA was founded by white Anglosaxon colonists from Europe, so they imposed their language and culture upon Native Americans. But it is sad that Natives amke only 1-2 % of total US population. And most of them live in poverty, their language and culture are diminished.
@mindqueen2127

Mile Krizman they make up a much larger percentage. The U.S. renamed them several times over the last 600 years, starting with the Prince of Colonization....Christobol Colon, after enslaving them. to this day people still don't realize the Indigenous Americans are still here. We all didn't die. Many of our ancestors didn't die.

No offense to the Chrokee, since I'm 1/8th both Cherokee and Apache, 7/8th Black, but when they said the written language was only about 200 years old, I don't see why they need to make the language have so many characters. Is it just for the sake of standing out? Makes sense, but... just too damn many. Not as ridiculous as the Chinese languages, or all three versions of Japanese, but wow.

@ivegottaheadache Yeah, I totally agree. I even said that Indians should be given special rights, like Afroamericans had from mid 1960's until now, when Afroamerican is the President. Why the largest ancestry group in USA are Germans (17 %). In my opinion Indians should be given jobs, better health care and education and stimulate infancy growth rate. In future I hope that Indians would become the largest ancestry group in USA (from 1 % to 18 %). Take care sis ;)

Mile Krizman Obama is an AFRICAN American. He is not an Afro American. There is a difference and this government knows this. This government disenfranchised the hell out of my people....the Indigenous Americans. They got the entire world thinking that black Americans are from some place else and for a huge part that is simplynot true. people came here and mixed with the Aboriginals....who are NOT the Native Americans of today. not the same people. The politics are going to be different because the government knows what chaos and confusion they have caused.

@milekrizman To be honest, it's for the best. There's still nations today that have either a native majority or a mixed race (mestizo) majority, and they're absolute hellholes. See Peru or Mexico. European colonization was a great thing, it just didn't go far enough. Not to forget, many of us whites descended from early American colonists have some Native blood. What makes these pure blooded natives any more deserving of the land than us?

Lol, look at these hijackers trying to take my people culture lol we were here long before anyone lol it won't work. This is proof they are not indigenous Americans, who took their language from them lol, no one, so why are they trying to learn a knock language that is supposed to be there anyway lol. They speak the language of their descendants which are from Spain, all of them Mexicans Latinos, and Hispanic speak Spanish, they are not indigenous Americans just like Mongolians, and Asians, the truth is coming out.
