Cherokees have always adopted technology for their own uses. This video is about how the Cherokee syllabary has been used by Cherokees in different technologies through history. Entirely spoken in the Cherokee language, the story is narrated by Sequoyah.

I am currently learning cherokee, or at least basic conversation. It is similar to my nation's tongue Choctaw, but the Syllabary is very hard to remember.

I don't know anything about the linguistic situation within the Cherokee people, so I have some questions. Does everyone learn Cherokee in school? Do they learn to write and read it? Do all Cherokees still speak the language or is it just a percentage that speaks it? Could you go to a store and just start speaking Cherokee, or is English the language that is always spoken first? In what kind of situations is cherokee (not) used: work? school? at home? friends? neighbour and neighbourhood? Local government? Ceremonies (not christian per se)?

Ukima only a very small percentage still speak the language unfortunately, but I think people are starting to recognize the importamce of knowing the language of your people so people are starting to learn again. Also, since English is the dominant language it is usually spoken first.

It's not a class in most schools in the area. You have to go to a Cherokee immersion school to really get a handle on the language since almost all the native speakers are older than 70... 99% of people who speak Cherokee also speak English because it's needed for interacting with the government, etc. It's most often spoken in the immersion schools and at home. I'm almost positive there are translations within reservations, but I've never been to one so I can't say for certain.

I found this on google images in cherokee script i was able to transliterate it but can't find any translations for it. I believe this is a sample of one of the versions of the Cherokee Nation Consititution in Cherokee, though I cannot find which one. As it doesn't match one version I can find.

what does it mean "weh-lees-tlee" min 3:33? because the same word exists in nawatl language (the language of the aztecs), it is wote as "hueliztli" it means surely.

Why would we be upset that someone would honor us and our heritage? Not all of us are cry babies and touchy feely girly men. Don't believe everything the politicians tell you. Why is it wrong for our heritage to be a mascot? Just because guilty white women say it's wrong and want to feel offended for us? I know Cherokee owned a large amount of slaves my mother is supposedly Cherokee. she does have really red skin. I was going to use those DNA test but I been doing some research and it said o need more than a DNA test to get into the nation. I want to learn this language and speak to natives on a regular basis. I was going to learn navajo and nauhtl because of those two being the one's I found still spoken from research. but I really don't know where to start. I hope as a man whose consider to be African American would seem like I'm being a culture vulture. I just in search of my ancestry. give me some advice.thanks

If you are really interested on Cherokee language and culture and you want to learn more about it. I encourage you to do it so. So good that today you can easily find a lot of resources in the internet and if you live in the States it would be great that you could spend a season in the community where they still speaking the language and learn it. I am currently learning Zapotec that is a native language of Mexico and it's great to discover another way to describe the world, to see the world with other eyes, I think that each language is like a window that allow us to see the world from other perspective.

DNA doesn't matter, lineage matters. Look on the DAWES ROLLS and find an ancestor of yours who lived in Indian Territory when the Rolls were taken. If they are on the Rolls, you only need to prove that is your ancestor through birth and death certificates. Keep in mind, many Indians didn't register out of fear of persecution. But, it's the only way to prove your heritage. The Eastern Band needs 1/4 blood quantum to be registered.
