A staffing shortage that can be felt by North Carolinians is the lack of troopers on the roads.
Currently, there North Carolina Highway Patrol has about 250 trooper vacancies across the state. That number could keep growing as several agencies are facing a shrinking police force.
“They are pretty short here in Mecklenburg," Trooper Darrell Simpson, who helps with recruitment for the NC State Highway Patrol, said.

48-50k a year is nothing with a family to support for a high risk job. Putting it all on the line for that kind of pay is insane. Making a widow and kids without a parent to say you did it for the community at your funeral. No thanks!

Why would anyone be a cop nowadays?? They are under appreciated, under paid and under staffed. Plenty of jobs are available that will pay more money with a fraction of the headache. Pay them well and you’ll get candidates. 🤷🏾‍♂️

One reason they can’t recruit is because the public see how much they work 7 days on 2 days off, then the public also see Troopers quitting because all that agency focuses on is a “number” how many numbers can this Trooper and that Trooper produce while the supervisors sit at home and look at your location. Do not join this organization is overrated!

I’ve lived in this state my entire life, I’ve never seen so little troopers on the road, I drive 40/85 between Burlington and Raleigh everyday and it’s nothing but a race track with the tailgaters the dangerous lane changes and road rage. I blame every bit of this on the democrats and the liberal education system. They’re tuning this into a third world country. I want some of my tax money back Roy!!!

I grew up in the western part of the state,and can remember stopping by a patrol office and trying to get info,and the sargeant talked to me like garbage because i was only 20 at the time. He yelled at me and told me to come back when i was 21. They didnt want certain people back then,and now noboody wants to do it and they cant recruit people to do it.

Double their pay still isn't enough for the risks they take. Why not take half of the state lottery input and give it to the Troopers?. Why pay out billions to lucky winners when so much of it could go to those who keep us safe?

Minimum entry pay for cops across the US is stabilizing around 60-85k depending on location. When you lower morale for law enforcement across the country, no one cares if you drive a cool car anymore. Therefore, people don't apply because they "just want to do something good for the community," anymore. I think we will see a shift to much more professional departments but not without a hefty price tag.

I wouldn't mind but the salary is way to low, bump it up to 75-80k (after taxes) then we can talk. Everything keeps going up and with that low salary it's hard to take care of my family

Even being a mp marine combat veteran is not good enough, just a " thank you for your service". When service is something you get from McDonald's.... We've made personal sacrifices for the people of this nation, and that's the thanks we get from them, when we're supposed to be on the same page.... Unsatisfactory!!!!!!!!

Meanwhile NC counties start at $56-58k. Most sheriff departments let their deputies run into other counties with permission from them to continue chases, so troopers are barely ever used.

So does PA according to the ads in my feed. When the politicians make being in Law enforcement not such a risk even for doing the right thing you will not have a problem filling the slots.

Being retired law enforcement from another state I have 2 observations. First the pay for law enforcement in North Carolina is pathetic I made as a sergeant what captains make here. Second, the highway patrol here are not legitimate troopers. They enforce traffic law and investigate crashes. If they had criminal authority the SBI would not be needed.

When I was LEO, I considered NCSHP. I learned that the word “Police” was nowhere in their title and for you LEOs, you know what that means. At that time they started at 32,000 a year and I had to pass.

entail we get a better government in office. I am talking all the way from the top all the way down to the D.A as well as most of the judges. in our country there will be a shortage as well as in our military the same so vote everyone out of our government we have in office today start all the way over study the people everyone votes in first

Let the cities/counties that need more troopers pay more. I don't know if my county is in need of more, but the Sheriff needs more to patrol a nearby street that is considered a drag strip by idiots with loud exhausts.

Change your chase policy, no one wants to be a Trooper and stop someone for speeding and then watch them run from you because you have a woke no chase policy. Learn from GSP.
