A drive on North Carolina State Highway 16, a four-lane expressway that passes through the counties of Mecklenburg, Gaston, Lincoln and Catawba. Typical of many US and state routes, the highway is a patchwork of freeway sections with overpasses and interchanges, and non-freeway sections with at-grade intersections and traffic signals.
I begin the drive on Mt. Holly-Huntersville Rd in Mecklenburg county, near the city of Charlotte, where I enter NC 16 North. From there, I continue northward and end the drive at Buffalo Shoals Rd in Catawba county, southeast of Newton.
It is worth noting that the intersection of Mt. Holly-Huntersville Rd and NC 16 is a Continuous Flow Intersection -- also known as a displaced left-turn intersection -- which according to the NCDOT "improves traffic flow and reduces delays by allowing left turns and through movements of one or both approaches to occur at the same time."
