First down line was exactly the 42 (you can see it at the top of the screen). Ruling on the field was a first down. Not targeting. If you pause at 0:35, you can see that DB was more or less leading with his back of all body parts, and it's the backside of his helmet that hits the punter's facemask. Since targeting is leading with the top of the helmet, this is not targeting.
@tastyneck
@tastyneck Год назад
@@johnweaver311 Targeting isn't defined as "leading with the top of the helmet". The rule defines targeting as: - Leading with the helmet to make forcible above-the-shoulder contact with an opponent - Targeting and making forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow, or shoulder This defender may start the tackle by turning his back to the punter but if you actually look at the footage he's literally leading with his helmet and shoulder a yard before contact. The actual arguable point is whether he made "forcible above-the-shoulder contact with an opponent". There's a lot of contact with the punter's upper chest and shoulder with "maybe" incidental "above the shoulder/helmet contact". It's at least a judgement call and most likely targeting.

I'm not sure your interpretation is correct. The only reference in the rulebook to that situation states "All players may catch or recover the ball behind the neutral zone and advance it." There are no approved rulings that confirm a second kick is allowed. What makes you say you can repunt it?
@bigpoppa1234
@bigpoppa1234 Год назад
@@HolySpicoli Page one of the actual rules makes it clear. NCAA Rulebook, Section 1 - General Provisions - Subsection Goal Lines - "... each team shall be allowed opportunities to advance the ball across the other team’s goal line by running, passing or kicking it". This defines "Advance" as "running, passing or kicking". Combine with your quoted section "catch or recover the ball behind the neutral zone and advance it" and a player can elect to "advance" the ball from behind the neutral zone, and may do so via a kick. The various types of kicks are defined in Section 16. Yes, this means you can have a punt blocked behind the LOS, and turn it into a place kick field goal attempt, or a drop kick.
@HolySpicoli
@HolySpicoli Год назад
@@bigpoppa1234 I saw that but it didn't seem to make sense because you cannot advance the ball across the goal line by kicking it. But then I thought maybe I'm just lacking imagination... The NFL recently changed the rule on free kicks so that it's a touchback if the ball touches the ground in the end zone, but if a kicker were able to kick high enough that the coverage team could run down and catch the ball on the fly in the end zone, would that still be a touchdown? Obviously that's a completely impractical question but as a matter of theory I suppose it supports kicking as an advancement. Notably, Rule 4-1-3 mentions that the ball may be "kicked, passed or advanced by rule." Every other use of "advance" in the book refers to carrying the ball. I'm surprised there is no approved ruling to clarify.

That was a gift. I was thinking yesterday about the entire basis of video review. It's faulty on its premise. Greater value is given to the call on the field than reviewed video. That's literally saying, let's value someone's reaction to a fast-paced, heat of the moment action over multiple individuals watching slowed down, varied angled replays of the play. They're after the wrong goal. They're going after, do we have indisputable video evidence to overturn a (potentially wrong) call, when they should be after, what's the right call? If they started w/ that question, we wouldn't have so many seemingly failed video reviews.

@deficitstifflegzercherdeadlift
The whole game is kind of ridiculous when you break it down. Think about how many times the refs spot the ball during the game, and how many times they’re off by a yard or two. Hell, even if they were only off by one inch every time, that adds up to a big discrepancy over the course of the game. Don’t even get me started on the offense having to “not move” before the snap, which isn’t even physically possible.

He absolutely CAN punt it again. There is no limit to how many times a team can punt the ball AS LONG AS it has not crossed the line of scrimmage. Actually, that condition has only come into play with the change this year -- it is only an illegal kick when "A scrimmage kick made when the kicker’s entire body and the ball is or has been beyond the neutral zone is an illegal kick, a live-ball foul that causes the ball to become dead ." The words, "and the ball is or has been" was added prior to 2023. People wrongly assume the rules for punts are the same as the rules for passes but they aren't. You can't throw 2 forward passes in a down, regardless of where you are on the field, but you can punt it an infinite number of times (place kick it too, for that matter). The defense might stop you but the rules won't. NOTE: I'm not saying he SHOULD have punted it again, just that the announcers (as usual) were wrong.

No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting. When in question, it is a foul. ... Note 1: "Targeting" means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Some indications of targeting (emphasis NCAA's) include but are not limited to: Launch-a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet

It’s cool to see an awesome play, but a wrong call is a wrong call. 100% the reason why I don’t care to waste time watching it anymore than just highlights on RU-vid

In the grand scheme, looks like this 1st down didn't matter anyway. UNC still dusted Syracuse.

There is no "indisputable evidence" that ball didn't get the 42. That yellow line is meaningless, it is not the actual line to gain and it is not even visible on the replay screen because it is meaningless. It is funny how people get so worked up over "omg it didn't hit the yellow line so clearly it's not a first down."
@GarrettBShaw
@GarrettBShaw 11 месяцев назад
The yellow line is off at the bottom of the screen. It should be centered on the yeard marker as seen at the top of the screen and both hash marks. The bottom shot has the line completely left of the yard marker. This is why the yellow line is just an estimate. The announcere trust it too much, and the camera angle is not inline with the 1st down line so it is hard to judge distance. I think it is honestly hard to say if he was or was not short. So ruling on the field stands. The announcers definitely probably only paid attention to the digital yellow line... They need to stop arguing the call and just congratulate the punter for not giving up on tge play!
@jasonalexander6417
@jasonalexander6417 11 месяцев назад
It is a first down. The yellow line is past the 42 and is not the first down marker. He gets hit just before 42, and when he spins, the ball reaches the 42 and he gets the first down.

Refs could have tacked on a targeting penalty from the guy coming in from the front who was leading with his head, and hit the punter right in the helmet...

I don't think he made the line to gain, but I also think the refs missed a pretty obvious targeting penalty.

The other part is that the camera is at an angle to the player. To really see it correctly the camera should be perpendicular to where the first down marker is.

It was a sympathy 1st down for sacrificing your body for the team.
@canisscot7763

The rule is “forward progress prior to being knocked out of bounds”. Assuming that the superimposed line on the screen is accurate, his front foot makes contact prior to the body contact that knocks him backwards and out of bounds. First down.

He was clearly a half yard short. Syracuse even challenged. Replay showed he did not make it. They upheld the call. The announcers were bewildered. Syracuse never gets a call passed the Mason Dixon line. In the long run it did not make much difference.
