Continuing through the most remote part of the NCT in Pennsylvania, the trail still runs over hill and dale, crossing streams and dry gullies as it follows the Allegheny Reservoir. At times it runs right up against the water and other times far away. While the elevation variations are not as intense as the previous five miles, the stream and gully crossings almost make up the difference.
We are going through the northern half today, and it is important to note that the NCT website has two trail alerts regarding wet crossings of streams. This hike crosses the second one, Tracy Run. It was low today but higher than Johnnycake Run, yet likewise (ahem) a piece of cake to cross, only needing to take care on the slippery rocks. At certain times of the year and times of flooding, it is considered an unsafe crossing, so be prepared if you hike during those times. The campsites along Tracy Run North are beautiful. A spur leads uphill to a shelter residing in a darker woods. Back on the trail with some daylight left, the setting sun adds a dimension to the final mile: Lovely Dark Deepness.
An interesting geographical footnote: The crossing at Williams Run is on the border of two Pennsylvania Counties, Warren and McKean.
Meshing with the NCT is the Tracy Ridge Trail System, accessible via Tracy Ridge Campground on PA Route 321. It connects to the NCT in this remote area of Pennsylvania. Today we intersected with it only once.
