There are a lot of good, hard-working people that live in the North End whom are trying to make their neighbourhood a better and safer place to live and work. People need to take a closer look at their own neighbourhoods & themselves before passing judgement. The sad & pathetic reality is that some people that live in these so-called "nicer neighbourhoods" think that their shite don't smell! There's a whole lot of ugly going on in those in "prettier neighbourhoods"!

Fucking rights, this one time I was in Island Lakes waiting to catch the 16, now mind you this is a white neighborhood and everyone is a "Good" Samaritan, fucking lies. The 16 at the time was 20 minutes away, and not gonna lie, my clothing at the time was alittle unappealing and would make it seem like I didn't belong, but it's 2018 I thought shit like that would be over and done, boy was I wrong, there were these undercover police officers that was cruising around that day, and also was a hot day too, I deicided to find some shade cause fuck the heat right? Well there was this tree in the divider of the road and I thought "Perfect!" I go sit and wait patiently, as 10mins pass by, I decided I was cool enough and went back to the bustop, I take my seat at the bench and waited, but suddenly a black car comes in the incoming lane of traffic and just rests right in front of me as I'm waiting for the bus, Two Officers! (Which I didn't know at the time.) They both come up to me and ask what I was doing in the area, I told them waiting for the bus and that they should mind their business cause why should other civilians care what I was doing, he also mentioned that I didnt belong i the area just because of my baggy appearal, and my glasses at the time were duct taped. Now I told them I had no time for this and tried walking away. They grabbed me by the arms and placed some cuffs on, now I guess they were expecting tears and plead for innocence, FUCK NO! I was furious I straight yelled at that cops face to let me go, and I told them you won't find my name in your database cause I didn't violate any laws, I proved them wrong by standing up and knowing my rights. I told them it was an illegal detainment because they didn't identify themselves until the apprehension, and that when they pulled up no lights came on. Not even to signify other drivers that official Police business was happening. I also tried to get their badge number but they just quickly flashed it and that was it. But I do have a name and that I might one day pop up in a Precinct and ask for this officers name and tell them about the illegal detainment. What I'm trying to say is, Racial Profiling is still a bitch!!!

For how sketchy areas like those are and how much bad vibes they give off, they are surprisingly comfortable for me. I used to live in the Eastern Hoods of Calgary (specifically in Forest Lawn), and I feel personally people living in those communities have a greater sense of bond and wellbeing with each other than a normal North American suburb. It's almost like, there's an atmosphere of "things may be bad, but we'll get through things, together". Mix that with the larger variety of mix-use land and just weird oddities, it overall is just more comfortable and fun living in a community like that for me. Although I must add, communities like Dover, Forest Lawn, Red Carpet, Shepard, Marlborough, etc are NOTHING in comparison to the Winnipeg North End -- but they are still similar, just more tame in comparison to the Winnipeg North End

I love the decay of the north end/downtown core - there is beauty in the rot. A camera easily dreams in black and white in Wpg. I love my hometown of Wpg but we really blew it as a village raising children especially in the 80's. Bachman sings of a Wpg from a whiter era - the 60's/70's - then first nations migration exploded. Opportunity squandered....

I used to go to the Merchants Hotel when I was a kid. It was the only place you could buy a case of beer when you where 16 and pick up a dime bag in one stop. All joking aside, I grew up in the area and it was rough when I was a kid but some of my greatest memories where of the churches shown and the many family weddings. I used to go see cheap movie at the Palace and sneak in a coil of Kolbassa and a loaf of kub bread. With my friends. Things have changed.

I lived in Winnipeg for about 6 years and must say that Winnipeggers are one of the most generous people I ve met so far...unfortunately there are so many tensions among ethnical groups. Why does the government pay so much money to the native population instead of integrating them into society????? this creates racism... The city can do better...I hope winnipeg turns out to a safer and more beautiful place.. very dirty and ugly city (except the south end)...

I bet you there are really beautiful parts of North Winnipeg but they're just not up on this video. Montreal's got some pretty sketchy places too. But lastly, enough with the racism. "Fuckin Indians.." Grow up, Indians are from India. Also, I'm not one of those "Red til were dead" Natives, but I don't appreciate Natives from other tribes being called down.

I think we all know about the negative things of the north end, but these pictures are mainly of all the streets south of burrows, north of Sutherland, and east of Arlington, and west of main. Could have at least shown Pritchard close to mcphillips or Pritchard avenue in the shaughnessy park neighborhood (part of the north end). Why not Redwood to mountain avenue, west of Mcgregor? It looks more working class around those parts. How about Church avenue or Cathedral? Those streets are nice overall. Sure they aren’t South Tuxedo, but they’re still nice parts of the city.

I lived in the North End most of my life and still do, I also lived in River Heights, Charleswood, and Meadows West also travel everywhere and there are far worst places all over North America, Asia,Central America and Europe.....The one thing that makes the North End Weak is the NDP Party has been in power far to long and really don't care Judy WL, George H, Doug M, The NDP will never be able to bring the dollars, program and services needed

I live here, and it really is a beautiful place to live. Well, it would be if people took care of it. It's not only the littering, it's the people. Most of Winnipeg are criminals, and it makes the good people scared to go anywhere. Down town could be really beautiful and we could be a major tourist stop in Canada, if there weren't smelly lazy bums laying everywhere. If there were less criminals on streets. Some places are great, but downtown, northend and places like this need to be changed.

I can think of many worse places to live. Flint Michigan, San Francisco's Tenderloin District, Philadelphia's Kensington Avenue and Halstead St. in Chicago immediately come to mind. And then there's Haiti, the favelas in Rio and Soweto.

@@motomissle Friend, it is not my intention to minimize the conditions in the north end. I'm sure they are indeed very depressing. And while we should not make a competition out of human misery, we should try to keep things in perspective. According to Statistics Canada, Winnipeg has the second-highest murder rate in the country. On the surface, that sounds frightening until you see the actual numbers. Winnipeg's pre-covid murder rate was around 6.25 per 100,000, well over the national rate of 1.8 per 100,000. But if we compare that to some cities in the United States then that number isn't so scary. American's most dangerous city, St. Louis, had a murder rate of 65 per 100,000 in 2019 (ten times the rate for Winnipeg). The second-most dangerous city, Baltimore had 58 per 100,000. In fact, the major US city with the lowest murder rate is Hampton, Virginia (ranked 65th). Guess what its murder rate is? 11 per 100,000 - almost twice what it is in Winnipeg. Now don't get me wrong. One murder is too many and these numbers mean nothing to the families of murder victims. But when your second-most dangerous city has fewer murders than our 65th most dangerous, you begin to understand that Winnipeg is not as bad as many people think.
