If I recall you have a peaked roof in the center. If so build up your gable ends, mount the ridge board, and then hang your rafters on both sides. Work from one end to the other and it will keep the ridge boad stabilized and centered.

It's kind of late to mention this, but with the bird mouth cuts, the cut should go on the outside rather than the inside of the top plate. Their purpose is to help keep the wall from spreading out.

All six of us went to Tennessee for the total eclipse in 2017, but my two youngest didn't remember it, so I drove them about 5.5 hours to northeast Arkansas to see the total eclipse. Even with the 2 extra hours of traffic on the way home, it was totally worth it! They had lots of fun playing with kids from all over the country, and then we laid on the grass with our glasses and binoculars during totality. Very cool seeing the bright pink prominence at the bottom, like a little pink earring (moonring?). So cool!

Whenever you cover plants you have to be mindful that the cover does not actually touch the plant. That can actually transmit cold, killing off parts of the plant. Try using a bit of wire trellis and a simple piece of sheet linen or plastic if you must. A small incandescent light bulb or a tea candle and you are good to go!

If you make a low rise raised bed about 4 inches high and stretch hardware cloth over it in the chicken coop then plant grass and greens in that. Dirt it will give them greens they cannot scratch out of the dirt. More greens better health for your hens and you.

Dogs seem to instinctively know about grapes, they pick them up and roll them around in their mouths a little, spit them out, and you find them behind the recliner all moldy in a couple days!!

@ourselfreliantlife Hi Jim and Jess. To protect plants from the cold and freezing, you need to cover the plants at a distance from them, so that the cover does not touch the plants and there is an insulated layer of air that will protect them. If the temperatures drop below *0 degrees, it is better to have two layers of protection, the top one is plastic to prevent moisture or dew and the second is a blanket or fabric. good luck to you. ❤️

If you want wasted lumber and buying lots of extra, have the lumber yard guys pick your boards. It's not just Home Depot ... I needed 12 2x4s for trusses for a small building. I bought 16. Half of them were split and had big knots ( a couple broke in half from dropping a couple of feet!). Others had such thin edges from shaving off bark on the original wood that I couldn't use them. Not enough room to nail them. I ended up having to get more boards to finish it. They were straight, but that's all I can say for them. 😞

Hey Jess and Jim, stay safe and take care. When I saw those wedges it reminded me of how I saved a box of them from my first build, 40 years ago and I still have them. With clamps they have helped me gently raise cabinets, doors, windows, set beams level etc. I place one flat edge down and the other reversed so the sloping edges slide across each other, the lamp is applied across both ends to push them together. This is a strong lift for a up to a couple of inches. Just a tip you may use at some point. Uvi is such a character and seems to bring you great pleasure, just love dogs too.

But I had to add the grasses and greens will help grab the A.M. dew as well and help with the moisture level. One could do this even around your trees until the trees are big enough to remove it. Kind of likekeeping mulch around it to feed the tree. You can go to spirit about that also Jess. Have a great day.

We had 3 days and 4 nights of HEAVY RAINS ribet ribet 🐸🐸 And the dam power went off for almost 3 days. No one said what caused it? A tornado, high winds, or what? Hey Jess? it best to cover your plant in plastic and it give it water.. My fruit trees i just spray them down with water as the water coats them in ice. Ice is a insulation.. I got 1 new 600 watt. solar street light up > but i don't like the solar panel frame. The wind blow it around. So i got to take it down again, make where its not so flimsy.. Then i will do the other 3, the same way.. Sundays are my rest day. I try not to do any thing 🤣🤣🙏🙏

In the UK we can buy large plastic tarps quite cheaply they usually come in blue , green, or white in sizes from six foot by six foot all the way up to 24 feet square, maybe bigger but that is the largest I have have purchased. one of those stretched over your garden from would trap in enough heat to save your plants from frost,. In particular if you were to stick one of those old fashioned parafin heaters to keep the chill off.

This year there was no April freeze. Looking forward to some great blueberries in about 2 weeks and a load of peaches in late June.

Cutting the light off from the plants will cause them to get leggy or may kill them. It's best to use clear plastic such as bubble wrap or just plastic so that the light can get through.

I'm glad you're moving into warmer weather now, that'll make everything easier for you. It must feel good to look at all you've accomplished so far on this new build and all you've learned along the way. Always great to see your smiling faces. I'm getting a very late start up here in Rhode Island preparing for the growing season. I haven't had much luck cleaning out the raised beds and containers between the rain, cold temperatures and mud lots of mud. We've gotten 27.05 inches of rain so far here in 2024! I dream of my little garden all winter long and all I can do is look out the window and shake my head 😂 here's hoping the spring and summer are full of good weather for us all. ❤

Hi Jess, I have been looking at your pole barn structure, and I see some problems. The inside poles near the doom door are too close to the unstable edge of the cold room stairs. They could collapse when the roof goes on. Then the next 2 poles are on the cold room roof. Not safe! It's likely to sag when the roof goes on. My architectural training says you have to fix this first.
