Northern Argentinian Food in Buenos Aires Argentina Travel Video Transcript:
#eatArgentina
Alright, so for today's meal we're eating at a place called Cumaná in Buenos Aires. And this restaurant specializes in Northern Argentine food. So these are dishes that you might find in the region of Salta or Jujuy. And the truth is that when we were traveling in Northern Argentina we didn't actually eat a lot of Northern Argentine food aside from empanadas. So it'll be interesting to finally sample those dishes in the capital.
So the food came rather quickly. It is already at the table. And since it is a bit of a cooler day outside we decided to both order stews.
I'm having one that is called Locro. And it kind of comes in this metal bowl that is really hot and I already made the mistake of touching it. So that won't happen again. But here you can see it is like really thick. You can see the chunks of corn in there. Wow. You have some spring onions, a little bit of spice. That looks so good. Yeah, you'll have to stir it around.
Yeah, let's mix it all in. That's probably how you're supposed to eat it anyway. I'd say. So let's mix it all in. And look at that. So it has different cuts of meat as well. I believe this one has pork and beef.
It is very rich and thick. It is like a nice stew.
Okay, so Sam you're having something called Carbonada Criolla which is also stew. Yes, and mine appears to be piping hot as well. It kind of has the texture and appearance of a chili. It look a bit like chili. And mine has got carrots and it has got corn. It has got beef. Let's try that. A little bit of everything.
Oh, that is delicious. I'm honestly usually not the biggest fan of stews but this is like almost as thick as a chillie. Yeah. Yeah. It is really good and it is quite sweet too. Yeah, and it is really the perfect weather to be having this. It is. It is a little bit rainy these past few days. And I like that it has got a generous amount of meat. And you taste the corn and the carrots a lot. And there is also potato in there as well too. So yeah, this is the perfect dish for us to be having on a cold day in Buenos Aires.
And pretty much every meal you've been having here in Argentina has been paired with wine. Well, it is just so cheap and so good. I mean the quality of Argentine wine is fantastic. And their national grape, the one that they're most famous for, is producing a Malbec wine.
So everyone watching our videos has already seen us try savory empanadas but today we're having sweet ones for dessert. Yeah, and I don't know how I have any room considering how hearty that stew was. I am full from all of that wine too.
We are going to try some special ones. These are very unique. This one has dulce de leche.
This is called Cayote. And it is a fruit that you find in Northern Argentina. I've never seen it before. But I asked the waiter to kind of try and compare it to something and he said it is kind of like a watermelon. Except it is white and that then when you boil it you kind of get these fibers. And you just cook it with sugar and it turns into this like really sweet jam. And they use it as a filling for empanadas. So, it is called Cayote.
So Sam seems pretty pleased with the price. Would that be accurate? Yes, that was a fantastic price. 282 Pesos, so that is less than 20 US dollars and for that amount of money we got two massive stews, we got the soda siffon, I get a generous bottle of wine and we got two dessert empanadas. And I have to say that the quality here was fantastic. Even the bread that was served prior to our meal was a really good homemade quality bread. This is one of my new favorite restaurants in all of Buenos Aires.
This is part of our Travel in Argentina series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Argentine culture, Argentine cuisine, Argentine food, Argentinian food & Argentinian cuisine.

For next trip, you must taste some food from Argentina North East. River fish (dorado, pacú o boga) as empanadas, "a la parrilla" or milanesas; mbaipy (it's a white corn polenta-like), chipá (cassava bread), etc. Can visit Iberá National Park, the second wetland of the Americas, with peaceful landscapes and a unique wildlife. Your videos are very good and funny!!! Audrey commentaries are so clear and Sam faces when tasting something are really self-explaining. Thanks!!! Argentina

Cayote is not like a watermelon (maybe just the look) but it is a kind of pumpkin actually. We only eat it cooked as a sweet (in empanadas or with some cheese) I don't even know if you can have it in other way, but the sweet is very delicious. As a northern I'm glad you liked the northern food, maybe next time you can try the tucuman style empanadas.

It's April 2021, about 4 years after you posted this video. Cumaná looks very interesting, it must be near your favorite, Parrilla Peña. The two stews looked delicious, I'm familiar with Locro! What's interesting about Salta town is that it caters to tourists , foreign & from BA. So, the cusine is not so authentic to the region! Also, many Porteños say it's expensive. I've been to La Tucumanita in BA. Just a counter service, takeout Northern type food. Cheap, interesting, casual & no-frills . Some days they offer locro! The Argentine peso slowly devalues every month, April 1, 2021 it sits @ 95ARS➡️US$1. Oh, by the way, loved seeing your dad at the Parrilla & especially at Don Ignacio's. Love that "Especial"💙

My favourite stew is lentils stew with chorizo colorado, onions, carrots, red pepper, lentils, either beef cubes, you may add bacon and my fave is to add hotdogs, the type we call salchicha de Viena. To me that's a taste of home, of my childhood and one of my favourite dishes.

I am so impressed; Sam dress to match the interior of the restaurant!! ;) I would have loved to eat there. It looked so good. Instead I am preparing the Norwegian-style Taco, which has nothing to do with Mexico-style taco, I am quite sure.

@karih5806
@karih5806 8 лет назад
+Samuel & Audrey We have an expression in Norway: Taco-Friday. So many of us, especially families with kids of all ages, make Taco on Friday evening. It is the start of the weekend, and the "best" day of the week with the best TV programs amongst others. (Saturday was the day we looked forward to 20 years ago, now it's Friday.) Most of us buy kits with soft tortillas or crunchy tortilla chips, sauce and spice. There is a growing variety of toppings etc for taco. One of the grocery chain store have all of taco-food for half price on Fridays. WE eat it with ground beef, grated cheese, sour cream, raw onion, tomatoes,salad, corn and brown beans. We use plain avocado too sometimes, but most Norwegians use guacamole. Another thing to mention is that every family has THEIR taco. The way they make it is what the kids are used to, and I guess it's a lot going on in our brains around this Friday tradition: Safety, time together, repetition, unity.
@karih5806
@karih5806 8 лет назад
+Kari H We even have pizzas with taco spice, by the way. There seems to be no end to our taco love here in Norway!

That "dulce the leche" in the empanadas is thicker because is not meant to melt. It's used for "reposteria" (desserts) and it's called "dulce de leche repostero"

2:44 That's EXACTLY what I thought that dish looked like! (And yes, I do mean the Carbonada Criolla!) I myself am watching this video right now, with the English captions on, at the same time as enjoying the White Chicken Chili that my mom cooked for dinner! And is the bread at 3:34 really CAKE, or just a side of "pan"? Because Audrey says it's cake except it looks more like just a slice of bread.

Yea , the Dulce isn't quite sweet enough . Drizzle some syrup on it too .LOL .I lived in the north and only recognized the empanadas but never had a sweet one . Most of the time it was so hot and humid there wasn't much stew being passed around . Never too hot to fire up the parilla though every nite . Plenty of time to party and cook . No one eats before 10 pm .

Yo do NOT eat empanadas using cutlery!! You grab them with your hands vertically, and start eating from the top edge. If they're too hot you may use a napkin. Either way I'd wait for them to cool down. Empanadas with dulce de leche sounds crazy though, I've never heard of that before! I love mixing salty and sweet flavors, so I gotta try that for sure!
