I was looking for history about the northern crusades and I don't know how I miss this one because these is very informative and entertaining. Keep it up
I must say, that in Estonian school, Denmark´s role in the war is quite secondary. The 1219 battle of Lindanyse is covered, the establishment of Tallinn and the conquest of Northern Estonia, but the main focus is on Germans /Brotherhood of the Swords.
@@Defferleffer which is correct - with "*". Estonian term "linna" initially meant a fort, bastion or a castle (like in contemporary Finnish), and later became to mean a town or a city (theres still "linnus" for the archaic meaning). Whence, initially it rather meant "Dane's Fort".
It's a miracle that the Estonians held on for so long. Estonia was threatened by the Danes from the north, the Swedes from the west, the Germans from the south and some Russians from the east. The invaders had knights, crossbows, trebuchets, great battle tactics and strategy. The Estonians had weak equipment, axes and swords. Despite this the Estonians held out for almost 30 years.
Our tribes did not get well with each other. If they managed to merge together peacefully, and form a strong leadership, they could have put up a greater fight.
No,it wasnt. Sweden and Norway had the same king, and Skåne was bought by The Swedish Norwegian king and thus part of Sweden. That map is very much true. When the black death hit Sweden-Norway everything collapsed however.
Bornholm too, but damn a lot of the maps in the video are trash. The shapes of islands and shorelines are completely fucked much of the time and not in a way that suggests that they are copied from old maps either.
There are some other countries that can also claim to be least religious, but in Estonian case, the nature of the christianisation is certainly one of the three major reasons behind the low religiosity. 1) Christianity arrived here with the sword and with foreign rulers. Paganistic aspects remained strong among the population at least to 14th century. 2) Reformation in the 16th century was very swift and this created a surface, upon which non-dogmatic religious thinking could grow in the future. 3) Communist atheism from 1940(4) onwards fell on fertile ground. It seems clear that communism gave the strongest blow to religion in societies, which were already precustomed to religious change. East Germany (protestant) and Czechia (with a long history of heretical or reformist movements) while failing in strongly catholic countries such as Poland and Lithuania.
The story of Dannebrog falling from the sky is probably at least partly a later invention, but one part of the myth may be real. The archbishop of Lund was the man tasked to hold the flag high, inspiring the danish forces to victory. When his arms grew tired however, he dropped the flag and the danes started to lose. Two knights were brought in to hold the bishops arms in the air for him, so he would never have to lower the flag. This mimics a story in the bible in which Moses inspired the Isrealites in a battle against the Amalekites by holding up the staff of God. When he, similarily, grew tired in his arms, his brother Aaron and a man named Hur brought him a stone to sit on and held his arms up for him.
In my opinion it’s time to let Estonia be a nice small Nordic country. Estonia very deserves to be a Nordic country, because Estonia has done a lot of work, we have many smart people, we are good at digital things, we have northern lights and we are very similar to Finland and other Nordic countries like: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Greenland. We are not similar to Latvia and Lithuania and the other Eastern Europe countries. It’s time to stop calling Estonia Eastern Europe country and Baltic country and forget all this terrible, rude and mean Soviet times. Let’s just stop this Eastern Europe and Soviet stigma thing and let Estonia turn the new page and let them be a normal small Nordic country next to Sweden and Finland!!! Estonians call themselves the Nordic country and many other people and tourists had also said that Estonia should be a Nordic country, because Estonian people are Finnic people not Balts and we are more similar to Scandinavia. Yes many people had agreed with that Estonia must belong to the Nordic group and seperate from Latvia and Lithuania. They don’t even need these countries, because Estonians communicate more with Finns and other Scandinavian countries. Estonia will be a very good partner for the other Nordic countries. We will do a very great work and we will be very strong!!!
There is a legend, that in the middle of the battle, when thing started to turn ugly for Estonians, they turned to God and promised to become Christians, if he helped them any way and God actually gave the red flag with white cross to Estonians. But Danes the bastards just snatched it when it was dropped from the sky and because of that Christianization of Estonians took many years and many battles.
