An 18k along the Medieval canal 'Damsterdiep', starting from the wierde-village Wirdum. Kind weather! Beautiful light for the footage!
Of interest are, apart from the canal - many a picturesque corner on and around its banks, the house 'Rusthoven', old brickworks, and an understated reference to the infamous earhquakes caused by the massive extraction of natural gas here. Understated? Yes, because we didn't forsee the quake of 3.4 Richter less than 24 hours later ...
As usual some route information provided.
Music: Loco Lobo, with 'Dear Happy New Year' and 'Funk & Schnulli Part 1'

We were the 3rd viewer on this video. As native Grunningers and Damster (ik van stad en mien vrouw van "Dam") we really appreciated your excellent video and commentary. We watch all of your videos from the comfort of our home in central Illinois, but feel as if we're back there with you. My wife and I cam here as preteens and love America, but have always had nostalgic and good memories of our youth in Nederland. Thank you for putting so much work into these productions, not to mention the wear and tear on your feet! Please let us know if we can correspond privately.

Ah thank you for your kind comments! Sharing this with people like you is one of the reasons why i love to film! By the way, by now you might have found the new playlist 'Hiking Groningen' on my channel? And as things seem to go i visit the States once a year, my daughter married and moved to Tucson and Phoenix Az. Long way from Illinois indeed but the States it is! For private conversation we could try facebook? facebook.com/wilco.dejonge

Really nice walk out in nice weather. It looked incredibly flat and excuse mu ignorance but is that Holland if famous for? The canal was really nice, is it still a working canal or just have pleasure boats on there now? Cheers Alan

Well Alan, the highest summit of the Netherlands is a mere 322m and you'll find that in the far south only. The country came into being mostly on flat riverdeltas [central Netherlands] or else on former mudflats [north, coastal areas]. It has its own beauty and i appreciate that too, but once in a while i tend to call it infamous for the lack of hills! For a few of those scarce hills, see f.i. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7XZdpj4rjfA.html By now this old canal has been replaced by a modern & deep working canal - the Damsterdiep nowadays is mainly for the watermanagement of this area and pleasure boats indeed.
