I wonder why he got so cheap on the French horn part. (he literally brought a French horn player in from another studio to blow a single note which David emulated .
@@cornwalldragon4617 Yep. He got the greatest french horn player into the studio, asked him to blow one note, captured it in an Emulator, and played it himself. Just odd and not a very nice thing to do to the player who donated his time. David is a fantastic producer but he has NEVER been a very nice guy, sadly.
This had the unfortunate distinction of being the last one of these to be released at the time. "Do They Know..." was novel and first. "We Are the World" was interesting too for the fact that the two most successful artists in the world wrote it. By the time "Tears" surfaced, it was just too much of this kind of thing. It didn't even chart in the U.S., though it hit #1 in Canada.
Nostal Jack. I agree with you. I am in the USA, A native. But I have family linkage to Canada. It is in the absolute shame that this song didn’t even make it on the charts in the USA. Which I also knew. The we are the world album and cassette (don’t know if there was a CD back then), Sold millions and millions of copies. I had one. We are the World was the first song On the first side, and tears are not enough was the first song on the second side. It was noticeable. I’m just amazed that there wasn’t a push here in the USA to have it make more of an impression. Again, excellent observations you made.🇺🇸🇨🇦
@@SW2799 David Foster is one of the greatest producers who ever lived and Bob Rock is NO slouch behind the board. It had the sound of that time but it doesn't sound terribly dated like a lot of songs of that period do. David made it as big and anthemic as possible. It should have done better here in the U.S. To my ears, the issue is the lyric. Bryan Adams and his writing partner, Jim Vallance, are responsible for it and while the concept is great - that people are hurting and simply feeling sad for those who suffer isn't enough - the lyric that put that across was really pedestrian, unfocused and platitude-filled. It could literally be about anything that's bad that action should be taken on. They're gonna help with something, gosh darn it. Also, the whole "We can bridge the distance, only we can make the difference" line is pretty egoistical at first blush. Still, the likely reason it failed is what I mentioned above: too many of these at once. We even got Hear N' Aid a little after this and while it raised money, it didn't do so well either. Years later in 1991, David Foster would take an old tune he wrote with Peter Cetera and get his wife at the time, Linda Thompson-Jenner to write new lyrics. Then, he did the assembled another huge group of talent again and called it "Voices That Care." That was the only Desert Storm anthem and while it charted, it was intended to do better than it did - ultimately stopping at #11. Apparently, he's just not the guy to have huge hits with these kinds of songs.
