Nah lots of people who love previous Souls games don't love Elden Ring. It's a great game but the format is just super different from the tight linear experience of Dark Souls or Bloodborne

It isn't 'universally' liked though. The biggest criticism ER has gotten was the open world design compared to the level design of past games. The Open World is just boring to traverse

​@A1phaz0ne It's not boring to traverse. There is nothing wrong with having a preference for more linear, structured level design. However, Elden Ring's open world is one of the best executions we have seen for open world games in a long time.

​@@blastimbreYeah but it still suffers the same issues that any open world game suffers, namely that of pacing which is why many people prefer DS, sekiro, and bloodborne. Those games have way better pacing than elden ring and their design is far more consistant as a result. The open ended design of elden ring leads to tons of people not learning how to play the game properly, being allowed to progress despite not learning boss mechanics and then hitting the astronomical wall that is malenia becauze they didnt know about posture break or hugging.etc Elden ring suffers because it doesnt teach you the things you need to know to beat the bosses, so you have people playing like its DS3 not understanding why they are getting stomped before they turn to summons to disengage with the boss mechanics entirely. Now I cant speak for everyone, but I play fromsoft games to overcome a challange and learn the bosses. But when I play elden ring and summon, it feels like cheating because im cheating myself out of that satisfaction of learning. This is why we have the elden ring melee solo purist faction. Because previously you were more or less expected to solo bosses with multiplayer being the crutch for the few who couldnt cope, but in Elden Ring its the converse, you are instead expected to use summons and if you dont then you are doing a challenge run and its something to brag about.

@gavinferguson2938 Again, the game is indeed an open world. Pacing will always be less focused than a linear game. However, this isn't dark souls 4. Expecting it to cater to that philosophy is faulty by nature. It was marketed as Elden Ring and was clearly shown to be open world. You know how these games are paced. Elden ring does teach you every mechanic you need to succeed. People refusing to learn mechanics is purely due to personal bias from earlier titles or the fact that they didn't experiment and read the in-game tutorials. I can agree that jump attacks and various stats could have been explained with more clarity, but you don't get to Melania with zero idea of how to play. You should be able to learn about the concept of hugging and posture breaks by pure trial and error and general intuition. And getting filtered by what is essentially Elden Ring's super boss isn't that surprising. I can see why the game doesn't appeal to all, but I don't agree with stating these as objective issues.

@@gavinferguson2938 I really dislike the criticism of 'Elden Ring is bad because it isn't Dark Souls'. It's not Dark Souls, full stop. They reuse alot of mechanics from the Dark Souls games, but Elden Ring is not Dark Souls, a big part of the game is the wide open exploration and the mystique of a world where you didn't find everything to find. If Dark Souls is more about mastering your way past challenges, Elden Ring is about discovery and 'discovering' a way past challenges, whether that be new strategies against bosses or new Spirit Ashes to use. Not saying Elden Ring is a perfect game; neither is Dark Souls, but they're simply just two different types of games. The majority of people who enjoyed Dark Souls also enjoyed Elden Ring because of the mechanics that did follow into Elden Ring, but Elden Ring was able to cater to a much larger audience purely because of the differences they made between their Souls series and Elden Ring. I personally love it because it allowed me to play the game similar to Dark Souls where I got past bosses without using summons, winning purely as a merit of constructing a good build and learning a moveset, while at the same time allowing my friends to progress through the game employing completely different tactics and items than me. It really feels like every playthrough is unique and that no way to play the game is 'correct', you do what you must to win. And I think that's rad as hell.

replays of base game can be less than 30 hours if you only go for all remembrances and just one quest.

From makes Sekiro finally breaking the mold and making a game that’s the distilled souls experience of mastering a boss and removing all the fat; and the next game is 75% fat running on the dark souls 3 blueprint. What a dissapointment.

There's just too much mediocre slop. Too many shitty little dungeons with nothing in them worth your time. The same stupid boss 15x. The areas could be 50% smaller and nothing would have been lost. The game rarely forces you to overcome anything, since there's always a crutch to use

Yeah you can skip 80% of all of that though which is nice. If you are worried about missing stuff you can always look up specific items you might want later

@@Ghorda9 typically I prefer new characters starting from lvl 1 and no items when I do my replays. So never been a huge NG+ fan, but you’re right it’s just my personal preference.

You can replay ER in 20h but 4 of those 20h eill be you walking on Torrent not engaging with any sort of level design. Open world is just padding

Yeah the game should definitely be 2/3 its size, there's not really enough content as a game or substance as lore/story to spread over such a vast area.

For years, it feels like games have been trying to capture that expansive feeling for years with all the open worlds that have been made and someone actually reached the peak where we're saying, "man that was TOO big." It's hilarious honestly.

True. Doing dozens of copy pasted dungeons and killing 100 rock goblin guys just for another summon I will never use is just a waste of time for both the player and the developer. Plus a lot of the open world feels a bit pointless sometimes when you can easily run past everything on horse and pick up shit on the way to the next actual level. Dark souls 1 is still my favourite in terms of open level design.

Every time a series goes open world, MGSV, Breath of the Wild, Elden Ring, etc. I'll enjoy playing through it once (or like half of it) when the limitations aren't completely obvious to me, and after that it permanently becomes the most boring game in the series. Zero reason for me to replay BotW even 7 years later. The novelty of an open world doesn't justify itself to history.

Yeah, the game is just too long, what's the point of entering a dungeon when you know the only reward is a repeated boss or a spirit ash that you will never use? For me the best part about the game are the Legacy Dungeons, but if that's what you like it's just better to replay any DS game or Bloodborne.

@@dfer95 I feel this way about slides. What’s the point? You climb all those stairs just to end up at the bottom of the slide? Why even do it? If the reward is getting to the bottom it seems very pointless. Some people say it stimulates a pleasing vestibular sensation, which is just pure copium from slide fanboys. I was kicked in the head by a donkey.

Except like 70% of the catacomb dungeons are pretty interesting. Overall, if you cut as much from Elden Ring as you suggest, the whole quest structure and the way build items are layed out wouldn't work anymore. At that point you're almost just playing Dark Souls 3 again.
