Keeping in mind I'm saying this as someone who hasn't watched a whole lot of anime - the "I don't like anime" argument to me is the same as when people say "I don't like black and white movies" It's a nonsense non-critique lol. "Black and white" or "anime" isn't indicative of any aspect of the actual material beyond the most absolute surface level, broad-strokes categorisation of maybe a visual style, but more likely they're just meaning "the means of delivery" Might as well say "I don't read paperbacks" or "I don't listen to MP3s" 9/10 times the opinion isn't about some convention common to the medium, it's just an immediate disregard of the entire medium itself.

I don't see why not liking a medium is a problem. Some people don't like books. Some people don't like comics. Some people don't like sports. Is that really so crazy?

​@@Brancliff Sports isn't an artistic or story telling medium, so that's apples to chalk - unless you're meaning to relay that as hobby-to-hobby which would be not liking /reading/ as opposed to not liking every single produced book just because it was printed as a book. Blanket "I don't like books" or "I don't like comics" purely because they're a book or a comic isn't crazy - but it is reductive, and also self-limiting for no real good reason "Book" doesn't tell you a single thing about the actual contents anymore than "Movie" does, besides that it's going to have written words in it.

Tbf at least Paprika is a movie about how the weird and gross shit is weird and gross. A LOT of anime tends to normalise weird/gross behaviours. To answer your questions though. Not every anime is weird and gross but a lot of tropes in the medium are inherently weird and creepy. So you'll be hard pressed to find an anime that isn't at least a little bit weird. I think cowboy bebop is the only one off the top of my head that doesn't have any weird or gross stuff. I could be misremembering it though.

Monster, Pluto, Akira, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex, Golden Kamuy, Mob Psycho, One Outs, Kaiji, Akagi (if you know mahjong.) A lot of shows are pretty insufferable with the cookie cutter tropes they use but real shows do exist. I've seen a good amount of trash but I'm not really an active anime watcher and mostly cherrypick the things that stand out to me. In my experience seinen (stories aimed at an adult demographic) are more likely to have a distinct artistic identity and less chance of focusing on fanservice or weird sex comedy. The kind of stereotypical, mainstream anime that non-watchers tend to imagine is aimed at children and teens. Avid anime viewers will watch 500 isekais or high school slice of lifes, get very familiar with the styles and themes of those shows, and then recommend them to outsiders like NL who probably won't find those things palatable or interesting even though some are good. It's still a fairly diverse medium though if you sift through the slop, there are no highschooler ass shots or comedic pervert characters in Monster.
