On a day where a ship from the doomed Franklin Expedition has been discovered, I can't think of a better time to share this Tonder Festival version of one of Stan Rogers' most beloved and unforgettable songs, a hymn to those whose hearts were born to wander, regardless of the risks. With Oysterband and Runrig band members, along with Alan Doyle (Alan Doyle Band & Great Big Sea, and Brian McNeill (Battlefield Band), this took place during the Saturday 40th Anniversary Concert. August 30, 2014.

I think Bruce Guthro is such an incredibly strong and soulful intelligent singer, he can pull it off! Of course all the rest are the absolute best of the best in trad as well.

It is incredible to hear a song that is so close to Canadian history being sung in Denmark along with people from Scotland. Thank you for posting this

I love Great Big Sea and Runrig so much. Stan Rogers also. What a joy to hear this.

THANK YOU! I was trying to find/remember a song I'd heard several years ago. Your mention of Great Big Sea here triggered my memory and got me to England (by Great Big Sea). And I was here because just today I found/discovered Northwest Passage... I've listened to probably 15 versions this evening (OK, it's like 1AM here now, but that's what youtube and great music will do to you). Stan Rodgers' version of course, and and so many others. I read "The Man Who Ate His Boots" last year (about Franklin's expedition), and now this song... wow.

@@Retired-Don A lot of people call this Canada's unofficial National Anthem. Unleash the Archers has an incredible rock version of this song. If you haven't heard that one you got to check it out.

I've seen so many cringe-worthy attempts to cover this Stan Rogers classic that I rarely even bother clicking on covers anymore. But this one is inspired, passionate, and genuine. Singers from three of the greatest Maritime Cultures--Canada, Denmark, and Scotland--all coming together, proves to have the strength and depth that this song requires. Bravo, gentlemen. Bravo, indeed...

1775Dreamer Check out The Water Boys cover then when you get the chance. It brought tears to my eyes. Also the Unleash The Archers cover of it is amazing as well.

When I first heard this it was the fourth version in a row I'd listened to. I exclaimed out loud "Finally it's sung properly". They unfortunately experimented with the tempo of the verses and it kind of doesn't work. Great voices though!

Chad Murphy oh good, I’m not the only one who thinks the guy at the right unnecessarily speeds it up.

This is a difficult one to get right. I did notice that their tempo was much improved when the audience provided a time signal.
