loved the Lava field hideaway in Flint. Ride the Dark Trail has a that homebase feel and it's due to the geography in that one as well. He also writes the best fight scenes I've yet to read. I could go on forever 😅

Nice shooting, McNulty! My favorite L'amour story is The Haunted Mesa, but I'm in love with the Sackett series .

One of the things that amazed me the most about L'Amour, besides his stories, is his travels and jobs earlier in his life. The descriptions of the countryside in his stories certainly are brought about by his travels through those areas. I find the same to be true of Zane Grey. You also mentioned Brand and Raine with whom I'm also very familiar. Of the two I enjoyed Raine more, but Brand was certainly an excellent storyteller. The thing I liked about Brand was that although he was writing westerns it almost seemed like the story was in a fantasy land. Another author of that time period that I truly enjoyed reading was William Colt MacDonald.

I am dying for another Louis Lamour read. I may have picked up several for a book haul, and because I am a sucker for series, like The Sackets. Spoiler! 😀Great video Thomas!

Another author that comes to mind with this type of critique is Edgar Rice Burroughs (also a big favorite of mine), who is guilty of a great many repetions of plot elements (lost, warring kingdoms, etc.). It has only really bothered me in certain occasional lesser works where the writing isn't up to par overall, making those things stand out much more. The better written ones keep my attention on the enjoyment enough that I don't get a chance to become too irritated by those frequently recurring elements. L'Amour's Flint is like that. Such a fun page-turner, that even when I make the critical observation, I'm also thinking: This story has really captivated me. I want to see what happens next. You know, I think most authors will have plot or motif repetitions sometimes--if they write enough books.

What writer who has written numerous books hasn't repeated himself? Take for example my pet peeve with Stephen King and his repeated use of Aliens. I read an S.K novel last December and I was really enjoying it and then suddenly up pops the Aliens. Aliens again!? Even his current release has Aliens. Please understand that I am Not against having Aliens in a story but I believe SK has over used them, IMHO. So you are 100% correct, the other writers were jealous.

I've been thinking about your going against the grain by saying Louis (looiss) L'amore instead of the more common Louis(Looee) L'amour. I've been wondering, if Mr. L'amour decided to make his last name a contraction bringing to mind a French name L'amour wouldn't he want to pronounce his first name in the French tradition of having the last letter silent? Thus using Louis(Loo-ee).. I don't know. It was just a thought that has been bugging me since your last post. If I am totally out there with this, just toss it aside.
