Demo of 1974 Norton Commando E-Start For Sale. I'll be listing it on EBay soon (beginning of Feb 2016). ***Up date** It's sold awaiting delivery
Long list of parts including an Alton E-Start kit, RGM belt primary, etc etc.
Camera mike makes it sound like a bit of a cement mixer but it's really pretty quiet. For a Norton ;-)
I can see I triggered a lot of you out there by initially calling it a cafe racer. Oh dear, no brown seat, exhaust wrap and back breaking clip ons or rearsets. So no, it's modified, it's custom but definitely NOT a cafe racer.

This Norton won the first 1/4 mile drag race competition of off-the-showroom bikes put on by Cycle Magazine back in the early 70's. Nice work Duane. Running so smooth that the outline of the taillight is a crisp line instead of a blur at idle. Good job.
@saywhatsaywhat1
@saywhatsaywhat1 Месяц назад
Yes I remember that test, there was some question about the bike being a ringer but it wasn't unusual for all manufacturers to try that trick. I did show the taillight to my buddy's Kawa 900 though. We were both surprised.

Well, Norton's new owners are supposedly ready to make some bikes and honor the people who already had bikes on order etc. It seems like they want to do the right thing and build some goodwill. We'll see...

Well done indeed. I don't see the engine jiggling in the frame with overly loosely set isolastics, and yet little to no vibration seems to be transmitted through it either.

Yes if the engine is jumping around a lot, there are issues. Some is expected.

I do think balance of crank bit out on these ole bikes no crankshaft dampers etc crank trying to fight it's way out of crank cases that's the racket , different microphones pick up sound unevenly amplifying some and attenuating others

Commandos were all beautiful, but this one is a bit extra. Back in `72, at the old 59 club, I parked a smart new oil in frame T120, next to a new Commando, it made the Triumph look very dull.

I love that fuel tank! My Commando has a Norvil racing set (full fairing, as '73 IOM production racers, racing seat, racing tank, front mudguard - custom made for me by Screen and Plastics in England in Norton "Signal Red" to match the stock red oil tank/battery covers). I was working at the Wolverhampton factory at the time so the purchasing department ordered it special for me; it's all Norvil parts - just not yellow! It's all in excellent condition but I'd like to replace the glassfibre tank now that it's 45 years old. Do you have a tank similar to that one that is in the same general dimensions to match the Norvil tank (and therefore the Norvil seat)? I went to your website but I couldn't find any Norton tanks besides the "stock" ones. it would seem a waste to cover such a beautiful piece of art as that tank with paint so I't probably just do some trim and accent to match my other red pieces. Oh, wow, that tank is pretty! One thing I've always wanted was an exhaust set that matched the "both pipes on the single side" like the '72 - '73 IOM production racers. The primary case, side stand, and chain assembly makes it hard to tuck in the left pipe enough to give good ground clearance. The guys at the Thruxton race shop solved that by putting both pipes and mufflers on the right and tucking them all in. I solved that problem a bit by running "SS pipes" for a while; that worked OK, they weren't too much in the way, they were comfortable with stock heat shields, and the matching mufflers flowed well (times at 134 Mph at the end of the pit straight at Ontario in 1976) but they kept cracking. So, I'd appreciate your advice on pipes that move both mufflers to the right. Thanks, BB
@saywhatsaywhat1
@saywhatsaywhat1 5 лет назад
Sounds like you have a nice piece of kit there, the alloy tank came from Tab Classics / UK and was pretty dear but I wanted the bike to be special so I figured I'd give them a try. It came unpolished, took me many hours on the wheel to get it presentable. I believe Roger at RGM has a twin right side exhaust that might work for you. Cheers, Duane

Thanks. My bike was built as a Combat 750 but soon after I bought it, it turned out that there was an 850 engine with a cracked cylinder in the experimental shop. After they figured out where they wanted to alter the casting patterns to stop that in the future, they wrote that engine off so I jumped on it. It had a hand-built crank and a "John Baker"* head and after it was officially mine I had John go over the head again to get it in "fine fettle". Oh, and while we were at it, we decided to go with a 4S cam, too. So my bike came off the assembly line with all the custom Norvil stuff but with a 750 engine but now has a pretty darned special 850 engine. I've loved it for 45 years! (* John Baker was an engine guy in the experimental shop at Wolverhampton. He was one of the best Norton head guys -- at least east of California -- that I ever knew. Unfortunately, just after the government crashed Norton and the Wolverhampton factory closed, he had a fatal heart attack in his very early 30s. We were good friends and that broke my heart.)

Sorry but no! This is just a Commando spoiled by some bolt on bits and bobs. I suppose if you can't manage kick-starting the Alton is a thing. A cafe racer is a specific style, which this is not. Rear sets, clip ons and swept back header pipes not ape hangers and a Corbin seat. The Lyta just looks wrong. I have a Dominator 88 cafe racer and my race bike is a Domiracer Lowboy replica with genuine Manx brakes, a five speed Schaftleitner gearbox and two real race engines. I guess the cafe racer is uniquely a British thing which some people don't get.
@saywhatsaywhat1
@saywhatsaywhat1 3 года назад
Ouch, sorry to have offended. In my feeble defense this is not the definitive cafe racer by any means, just a bike I threw together from a parts stash that was someone's unfinished project. I'm afraid my 70 year old back can't tolerate rear sets and clip ons anymore. Over the years I have built one or two bikes but in the end surely not for anyone else's approval . Best of luck and enjoy your machines.

Tick over is far to fast, why not ride it give people a chance of seeing it on the road, the walk away thing is stupid. The Commando is a fun bike to ride, listening to them is the best while sitting on top on winding back roads, great low down power yet let it rev and will get on song..
@saywhatsaywhat1
@saywhatsaywhat1 7 лет назад
Brian, the motor literally had zero miles on it so a fast idle tends to keep the cams and lifters from scuffing until it gets a little more break in time. I didn't do an on bike video because I didn't have a helmet cam at the time! Plus it was cold out.... Bike is long gone.

@saywhatsaywhat1
@saywhatsaywhat1 6 лет назад
Thanks for the comment but the real issue was the microphone not the engine. Cheap mics don't really record the full 20-20KHZ range if you get my drift, the higher frequencies tend to sound accentuated because there is no lower frequencies to balance it out. It really wasn't any noisier than any other Norton I've owned. If you want to donate some pro level equipment then I would be appreciative!
@saywhatsaywhat1
@saywhatsaywhat1 6 лет назад
As I have replied in other parts of this thread I don't have professional recording equipment, my cell phone really doesn't have a decent microphone. Bike ran well, sounded good, and didn't leak oil. Not so sure I've ever owned a Norton that whispered and I've been working on them since they were new. Maybe you have more experience than me on the subject so who knows?
