Funny that Trixie referred to her husband as "Norton". Btw, some dope asked Gleason why the Honeymooners is still so popular. Jackie answered "because it's funny". 🤪
There was 40 years between my old man and me, these two comic geniuses bridged that huge gap. We laughed until our faces were beet red and are stomachs were sore. Gleason and Carney, the best!
Art Carney said he got this from his father, who was self-conscience about signing papers from Art's school. He recalled that his father would arrange things just so and carefully sign his name neatly so it wouldn't be a bad reflection on Art.
Norton said his dad would move everything away from the paper (like the cornet) even if it wasn’t remotely in the way. And when Carney was rehearsing the skits, old man carney would shout out to him “Shoot the cuffs!”
bluesky This is one of the dumbest comments I’ve read, because not only has this term been around since the late 16th century ...but going with your logic ...any person that repeats any word/term used before in history ....is a “copycat”. Moreover, what adult uses the term “copycat”...?!
One of the best scenes on one of the best shows ever made. My father knew one of the writers, Walter Stone, not personally but from around town in Dunellen NJ, where Kramden had his hotel.
I loved these 2 ---------after all these years they are still, The Gold Standard of real comedy ! -----------------I just want to go back so bad. ----------------------------------WolfSky9
'oh you're gonna GET IT NORTON YOU'RE GONNA GET IT!!!' '...Ralph Kramden the sweetest guy in the world.' Norton may be a pain in the ass and drive you crazy but he's a true pal!!! sniff, sniff hehe
Began watching this show when I was a kid on Long Island was on weeknights WPIX at 11:00 PM. Now have the cd’s must’ve seen each episode at least 50 times if not more still funny. My best friend in NC found a Golden Retriever on a country road on Christmas Eve 1997. My friend was also a big Honeymooners fan and already had 2 Goldens so he gave the one he found to me. Gave the dog the name Ralph’s mother called him “Sonny Boy”!
Used to watch them every night at 10 p.m. on WGN 9 in Chicago when I was a kid. Never laughed so hard in my life. Had each episode virtually memorized. My mom used to say "Turn the Fat Man on" 😂
I can still see the look on my Dad's face when Ralph would say , one of these days Alice!! Pow, to the moon!!! Nothing but teeth showing from ear to ear. In those days we had one t.v!!! ONE , not five!! And ,maybe we would get 4-5 channels if we were lucky!! , And, at night we watched what our parents watched cause that's the way it was!! Who's with Me on that??
Ralph claims that Norton took a "half-hour" when he wrote down his mistakes/bad points. If that was true, it would actually be longer than this entire episode! From what I can tell, it probably took Norton about 20 or 30 seconds to write down Ralph's bad points. The timing of Norton writing down Ralph's good point (only one) was pretty much on the mark at about 5 seconds. In any event, *The Honeymooners* is such a good show from the #GoodOldDays. Some of it is funny. Some of it is dramatic. But, it's all good, either way.
The "half-hour" wasn't meant to be interpreted literally. Ralph privately feared that he had so many flaws that it would take anyone 30 minutes to list them all, and that's why he was so uptight. Norton knew this, and only wrote down five, and then wrote one good point to say: 'We all know you're really flawed Ralph, but that doesn't matter because your heart is in the right place.'
The hand motions when preparing to write was something Art Carney picked up from his father. He just exaggerated it a bit for comedic effect. I'm not an expert but I think its a mild OCD thing. I have mild OCD and have quirks like that too. There's really nothing wrong with my memory but I fear that I'm losing it constantly. I end up doing a lot of things twice "just to be absolutely sure" that's it's been done. I sometimes fear that the washing machine didn't really get my clothes clean and I'll wash them again.
so who here when channel surfing and come across the honeymooners keeps surfing channels, not me i stop right there, too hard to resist, they were the best
What is mind blowing is that this comedy gold was canceled after only one season. Joanie Loves Chachi lasted just as long....ugh. There is no justice in this world.
Similarities to Seinfeld: Norton and Kramer. Jerry and Ralph main character. Both shows went out on top. Maybe Jerry modeled his show after this and never mentioned it. I think this is so much funnier. Jerry's show had canned laughter over really dumb remarks. I can't watch it anymore.
So there's a cornet prominently displayed on the table, and Ed Norton lists one of Ralph's deficits as "A lousy cornet player." He even pushes it out of the way before he starts to write. WHEN do we get to hear Ralph actually play? What episode? Jackie Gleason actually was a pretty good musician - a conductor of lush "Bachelor Pad" music for Columbia records - so it's within the realm of probability that he could blow some cornet.
Ralph plays the cornet earlier in this episode. He uses the cornet as an inspiration to "hit that high note" of achievement, or success. The cornet is laying on the table to constantly remind him to keep his eyes on the prize, to get that job of senior clerk transit authority.
@@Normantnt AH yes. Thanks, Norman. Actually, I found the complete episode with the whole opening sequence. I blow a cornet myself, so naturally I was curious...
.....maybe true about the Cornet. One of Jack Benny's schticks around that same time is that he was a terrible violin player, and was seen on many shows hilariously murdering the instrument. But actually he was a very good violinist and enjoyed his musicianship 🎼🎶🎻
