In the first of a two-part special on Norway, we look at how Norway has achieved the highest level of EV uptake in the world by far, and how their dizzying "elbil" sales figures translate into everyday life in Oslo and Bergen.

Great video. Really good to see just how popular they are with more than the annual sales numbers. Wonder when we will catch up in Scotland or the UK as a whole.

There are already pockets of high uptake in Scotland (Dundee, Orkney) and the rest of the UK (Nottingham and Milton Keynes spring to mind), with other cities rolling out some creative trials to catch up (Oxford's on-street charging trials). Unfortunately, some local authorities haven't been so proactive in rolling out public charging infrastructure. However, as more and more EVs come on the market with 200+ mile ranges, people with off-street parking will jump at the opportunity to buy them and save substantial sums of money on their fuel bills. Also, we are starting to see privateer charging network operators competing with ChargePlace Scotland, such as InstaVolt, who have been installing quick and reliable rapid chargers in locations that may seem random at first, but do fill crucial gaps in the network. More charging options, and locations, will help to encourage people without off-street parking to make the switch.

I thought the UK govmt we're going to legislate so that every petrol station would need charging facilities? Haven't heard much about that recently. As for Norway, the facilities look great and we can only dream of that ever happening here. It takes a government that walks the walk instead of just paying lip service to the future of transportation.

Andy Taylor Easy to say, harder to do. Plus the government could encourage the uptake of EV but so far have done little. Not all fuel stations have the facility to have vehicles parked up for an hour or more. Plus I suspect, the big petro-fuel suppliers, who own the majority of filling stations, will just tell the government to go to hell.

Coming from Norway, and personally driving an Leaf. It’s quite strange to see just how few electric cars there are in the UK. after a week in Huddersfield/ Leeds I only saw 3(!!)EV’s. 2 Tesla model X, and one S. If I drove down my street home I would see much more EV’s. And now in March 2019, 58% of new car sales were fully electric!

Here in the Czech Republic, last time I saw an EV was on Friday, June 21st 2019 (I'm writing this on the 25th), and it was a VW e-golf (I saw 2 that day, and I consider that being very lucky). The highest amount of EVs I ever saw on one day in normal traffic was 12, and that was when I visited Prague, where their concentration is the highest in my country. If I only spoke about my hometown, the number would be 4 on one day. Also, the rarity of Teslas is something between a Rolls Royce and a Maserati where I live. I'm not even talking about driving behind or beside an EV, that has happened to me less than 10 times in my lifetime. And so, every time I see an EV, I just STARE at it, maybe even give a thumbs up to the driver, and enjoy the moment.

Goodness ! I thought Scotland was way ahead but Norway has done really well. Shame on my local authority and the large national company I work for for falling well behind on installing charge infrastructure and incentives.

Write to your local authority and tell them about the various OLEV grants that are available for charging infrastructure in the UK: www.gov.uk/government/collections/government-grants-for-low-emission-vehicles Scotland has additional funding available through the Energy Saving Trust and Transport Scotland. For excellent examples of how to roll out EV charging infrastructure, encourage the councillors and civil servants responsible for this in your local authority to take a trip to Dundee and Milton Keynes to find out more.

So here is an answer to why it is so dificult to get your hands on e-Golf in UK. Most of them are LHD to be sold in Norway.

Off topic, but here goes… Am picking up my new Nissan Leaf today. Arranging insurance last night, the broker asked “What CC the car was?”. I had to say “Zero” because it doesn’t have an ICE. So, my question is when most/all cars are EVs how will they be distinguished in marketing? I’m guessing battery capacity will go the way of ‘bits’ did for game consoles and computers. Range, and “Nought to sixty” aren’t particularly quantitative. So, will it be torque, or something else that will define the capacity/efficiency of the vehicle? Would be good to have at least part of an episode speculating on how EVs will be measured/hyped in future. Thanks!

The UK collects approximately £28 Billion from taxes at the fuel pumps, this must be impacting the UK's switch to electricity despite the government's promises to go greener.
@PlugLifeTelevision
@PlugLifeTelevision 5 лет назад
It's likely that Vehicle Excise Duty and fuel tax will both be replaced by a pay-per-mile road tax at some point in the future once most vehicles are electric. This will have the added effect of encouraging more people to switch to electrified public transport and active travel. In the meantime, there's the argument that the government saves a great deal of money by reducing exhaust pollution in urban areas, which reduces the cost of treating people with associated respiratory and cardiovascular issues on the NHS.

Yes, like España where they did away with the need for a VED disc or even the pay-it if you remember it's due system. With all the extra associated paperwork. The Spanish just tax per litre of fuel at the pump. So the more fuel you kms you travel, the greater the contribution to the road system. It also means that if you have a gas-guzzling hgv or a sport car that does litres to the km, you pay more by choice. So more you vehicle does to the litre the less you pay per km.

@RWBHere 5 лет назад
In Britain, we no longer use tax disks. And we pay over 80% in tax on every litre of fuel we buy. That's why our fuel prices are over £1.60 per litre. I can foresee a much higher tax on electricity as an alternative way of raising revenue. And we'll be paying road tax on EV's which will be more-or-less in line with the road tax on all other vehicles. U.K. governments like to make the tax system as complicated as possible. :-| That makes for a very inefficient tax system, and employs far more people to manage it than would be needed if we simply paid an income tax at a higher rate, and a standard-rate sales tax on all nonessential items.
