Norway's Muslim immigrants attend classes on western attitudes to women 

This is the problem: the Norwegians don't need to understand YOUR culture. You are in Norway, it is your duty to understand Norwegian culture and adjust. You're a guest. FOR EXAMPLE, when I lived in Saudia Arabia, I adjusted my life to their culture, whether I agreed with it or not. It's called Respect. I didn't go there, drink, chase women or petition to start a Christian church. Why is this so difficult?

The fact they needed to take this class says a lot.

The fact that highly educated men with professional jobs and English proficiency have to be taught to respect women is absolutely mindboggling.

If you have to tell men that touching women without consent is illegal I don't think they're qualified to become a citizen of a 1st world country

I'm Indian and I'm sorry but this isn't a Norwegian thing. This is BASIC respect that women deserve.

This isn’t even adapting to another, this is literally basic human rights and basic woman’s rights.

If Norwegians came to Syria and refused to abide by Syrian customs, these men would be outraged. You have absolutely no right to act like you’re above Norwegian law and culture when you are the ones that were chosen to enter Norway.

I had the privilege of living in a foreign country, Bulgaria, for 11 years. I did not expect the Bulgarians to adapt to my english ways, I adapted to their ways and was welcomed.

The class should be ''you are in our country now, adapt or leave'.

The guy who kept saying it's better for women to not be equal was such a creep.

Women equality aren't western values, they should just be considered human values....no human should discriminate against people.

I think there's something to say for a woman teaching that class. That in itself will be a brutal lesson for some: That you must listen to, learn from and respect a woman.

If a grown man needs to sit in a classroom and be taught to respect another human being - the society you live in failed.

I don't understand why asylum seekers want the host country to learn their culture instead of the other way around. What kind of pompous behaviour is this?

As a Syrian, I feel ashamed of these people and their answers. They are giving a bad impression about the Syrians. When you are welcomed in a country, you should respect their values.

5:00 I'm sorry, but there's a reason why this couple are stuck at these classes. The teacher DOES look at your background and how you respond in class. When I moved to Norway with my parents from Iran, they had to attend this class twice. After the second class, the teacher told my parents that they don't need to attend this class anymore, because and I quote "You already knew the Norwegian values". Some immigrants in Norway DO refuse to integrate!

My friend was teaching these classes in Sweden she said she couldn’t believe some of the words the men said about woman.

I was an immigrant once, and a naturalized citizen going on many years now. Acclimating to a foreign culture is difficult, but not impossible. If you're going to travel in foreign places, you must respect the rules of their land, period. If not, go back home, to whatever feels familiar to you.

Hats off to the lady teaching the classes. It must be tough for her, especially knowing how little effect the classes will ultimately have on most of these men.

It's great that Norway recognises the urgency and importance of teaching immigrants about their attitudes towards gender equality. But sadly, the immigrants don't seem to care.

I’m seeing a huge display of disrespect to Norway and their people who have opened up their country for these people to be safe.. And they say that they need to learn about their culture too? It says something about a culture when grown adults from that culture have to go to class to learn to treat other sentient beings with basic moral decency.

It’s frustrating that they’re ‘annoyed’ that they have to go through the classes. BE GRATEFUL Norway has allowed you and giving you refuge! Integrate! We’d be forced to if we were in your culture so do the same for ours!

I’m an Asian American who was born to immigrants. And honestly I think it’s all about balance. Learn the language and culture of the host country to adapt. However, it doesn’t mean you should throw away your previous culture either. I feel like you can continue your previous cultural practices as long as it doesn’t cause harm to the citizens of the host country. So you can eat, sing, and dance differently from the host country. Your home itself can represent your heritage, being filled with objects and traditions that remind you of home. However, when you are interacting with citizens of the host country, you should act accordingly with the manners of that country. Edit: Oh wow thank you everyone for the likes! Edit 2: and for those asking in the replies, I do condemn the treatment of women as objects. As a woman, I am especially disgusted since these men in the video seem to be using “culture” as an excuse. As mentioned above, you can do anything from your culture as long it does not harm anyone.

Immigrants must show respect and abide by the rules and values of the country they move to. If they don't like those rules and values then they should leave as they are not welcome.

I have never had a problem with immigration or multiracialism BUT when you immigrate to a country you SHOULD assimilate to a country's culture and language, you are there to contribute, not to take.

in Vietnam a mantra we say:"Nhập gia tuỳ tục" it means that when you visit a place, you must follow that place lifestyle. It doesn't make sense if you come to a host and ask the host to follow you. You can keep whatever etiquettes and manners belong to your cultural life, but when you join a new company, a new society, you need to follow their cultures.

The asylum seeking student had the nerve to say Norwegians have to learn about their customs too. They are the ones seeking asylum in Norway. If they can't accept Norwegian custom and adapt their live styles to it, then why don't they seek asylum in a country that already have the customs they prefer to adhere to.

Western countries must not compromise their values.

And even after at least 4 years in Norway that woman from Qatar doesn't speak Norwegian. What does it show?

Respect for women is not something that can be taught in a class room it's not cultural its a personal principle, it needs to be taught to a kid at home.

If this is how they behave in a country where they're seeking asylum, imagine how it's like in their home countries. It's disturbing and disgusting how women are basically seen as objects

The basic rule: When in Rome, do as the Romans do" The men interviewed here seem to think it is their right to behave as they did in their home country. You are guests in Norway. You should respect your hosts and their rules. I think the Norwegians are being very patient given this disrespectful behavior.

Helping a wife around the house is a step forward, but also proof that they have not yet embraced equality. If both people are equal, you are not helping the woman with her housework, you are simply doing your half of the work.

It is common decency that when you come to a foreign place, you learn something about the culture there, and you act accordingly. But that doesn't and shouldn't mean that you actually have to leave your values behind. It is perfectly possible to respect something that is different from yourself, without totally adopting it.

My heart is hurt seeing the immigrants are reluctant to learn Norway cultures and values. And I am not even Norwegian. The Norwegian help you guys, please respect their values. I'm from a developing country and I am very thankful for those countries who open to immigrants. You can't rely on adults, we put our hope in their children. Please teach the children well 🙏 I hope the best for Norway.

Funny how adapting to western culture simply consists into respecting women as human beings with free will. That says it all.

I think Denmark has the right idea in that they do not allow immigrants to live in one neighborhood and congregate together. they make the immigrants live amongst the Danes so that they integrate into Danish society and are forced to live life the Danish way.

Here in America, women fix houses all the time. They've clearly never seen HGTV. And some of the best kindergarten teachers are men.

No wonder the Europeans are getting pissed at the immigrants. Almost all of the men who spoke in the class were hostile and clearly not willing to accept western culture. When you are a guest in someone house or someone country, you should be respectful of their ways. Their poor attitudes make me question if they are even thankful to their host country.
