Roy and Moss got a new challenge! This puzzle is more difficult than the previous one so we allowed them to inspect it a few days before the filming. We expected Moss taking the lead like last time but see what happened...

The way they go about opening things is interesting - anything that sticks out is a potential point of attack :D Do they know how to open doors and drawers? Also the dynamic between them is cute. Roy is smart but lazy, and Moss is more persistent but it often takes a while until he succeeds. Yet he patiently waits for Roy to finish eating before he goes for the leftover treats 😂

Moss: Quiet Evil Genius. Roy: Accident-prone Evil Genius' henchman who just happens to bumble into the right answer. I feel like the hardest thing with dog treat puzzles like this (awesome!) one is that dogs can understand cause + effect, but cats don't, and some of the puzzles are built on that assumption. It's why you see pawing motions (or headbutting, lol Roy) on a toy they've figured out before. Eventually they can resolve a series of actions leads to a desired outcome, training themselves pretty much, like you show so well with Roy and his inhaler. The part I love best is seeing the things they've taught themselves to do carry over between toys, like the little trays with cord handles. Moss especially seems to know exactly what they're for, and because the action keeps getting rewarded, he's more and more confident with it. (Roy can do it too, we've seen, but it's not a mechanic he zeroes in on right away. He'd rather use his nose to hunt down a treat and then brute force the puzzle open XD ) It's something that is used to help define "intelligence" (tool-using, tool-making, cause-and-effect, etc). Cats score quite high, but cause and effect just doesn't work in their little walnuts beyond "recognize item/gesture/vocaluzation, do taught action, get treat". With Get Treat in big flashing text, lol. Dogs and horses test out higher (overall, there is tons of varience between individuals and breeds of course!) but only because their brains are capable of determining cause and effect. There are some really awesome videos from the 70s showing some of the tests they did with cats like having a glass box with three strings coming out, laying untangled and only one having a treat attached. Cats will treat all three strings equally -- crows will pick the correct string every time. It's an optical cause and effect puzzle, but it's really cool once you realize how hard it was to make tests that only tested for only that very specific facet of intellect! Cats are super smart, please don't let me understate that. They're smart enough to learn and adapt, and on a housecat level it means they can be taught an almost limitless number of things. There is a "Cat and Dog Circus" that comes around here every so often, and their sketches are all done with rescue cats and dogs but are absolutely mind-blowing in how complex and multi-step they are. Cats are ambush predators, so Moss isn't being lazy as he watches Roy and studies the puzzle. This is the best way to conserve energy, actively watching from a still posture before pouncing. He knew exactly what he was going for once Roy ceded the field (because brothers get their giant heads in the way and steal treats). Even Roy is still actively using the puzzle from further away -- he isn't actually off doing something else, he's doing what Moss did from a distance. Not discouraged, but briefly stumped and pulling back to compute at a distance he won't startle the "prey" while still able to see everything with those sharp eyes. As my older kitty lost her sight, the biggest behavioural change was honestly in playing with puzzles like these! She no longer waited at the side or moved away to observe, but was there actively until every morsel of treat was consumed. She didn't have the option of "playing" (it looks like loafing lol) from afar, but with that utterly unshakable cat confidence just turned to using her other senses to hunt down delicious treats. She'd still chase toy balls (her favourite thing) by sound and vibration, as we kept places clear for her to run flat-out, as kitties need to do XD. Sorry for the huuuuge essay! Your videos are fantastic, as are your boys -- they're such wonderful stars, super secure in themselves and their safety and being loved, they can turn all that brainpower to learning new things and solving puzzles and generally being ridiculous felines. I get so excited because there are very few videos where people just sit back and let the cats work, as folks like to try and encourage and generally meddle for faster results, lol. You catch a lot of really good angles showing some of the thought processes and mechanical processes, it's seriously wonderful. I've been recommending these videos to my students on cognition and intelligence, as we've learned that lab animals need the influences of affection and security to fully unlock their learning potential, instead of depriving them of it. We get "better" results, even if they're often challenged as being biased by contact with humans (everything is biased because humans are involved, pfft) and yet the human/love element is why we have wild dolphins show up to interaction stations we place in the ocean where they can hang out with a couple of divers, do puzzles, get some food, touching, playing, etc. They tried placing the stations by themselves and had nothing more than a cursory interest. Add a human to interact with, touch, vocalize with, play with? Now they're in constant use! We're still very Skinner-box in our approach to intelligence, when anyone can tell you that a dog or cat or rat or horse or parrot will try harder and achieve more just by having a loving and supportive person. Housecats especially need things like reassurance and encouragement at critical stages in their development, but also through their lives. A cat that knows she's loved will be able to do much more, partly because she's able to re-assign resources usually spent on security/vigilance/hunting and use them on higher function learning. tl;dr Loving cats literally makes them smarter. Roy and Moss are two glorious floofy examples of this. They're young and getting the building blocks solidly in place, and they're terribly smart and their people are also terribly good and effective teachers who are doing the world a favour by documenting them and sharing them with us 🥰 (They're also excellent candidates for world domination. Keep an eye on your credit card bills -- if plutonium purchases start showing up, we're in trouble)

And solving/not solving this puzzle doesn't necessary mean that they are very smart or not so smart. Maybe they are not motivated, they are not in the mood or they have other skills. Eg Moss is usually better with these puzzles because he's very food motivated. Roy extremely good with opening doors and drawers and I have never had a cat before who communicated with me such a high level as Roy. :)

A Siamese would crack that in minutes. My first, name of Jasper, was a 'move house' character. His owner wasn't interested in him and he spent most of his time on the street. The resident feline wore a magnetic collar to gain access through the cat-flap and to keep the local gang out, which worked fine. It took Jasper all of 30 seconds to crack. That was it, a second boss to satisfy.

Cats are generally very smart. They know what is worth their while spending time on to get something they want. In this case it is a tangible something: food treats. Humans spend time trying to get satisfaction out of puzzles and the rewards are Not tangible. Or maybe we get a little endorphin rush when we succeed to make the effort worth while. Cats seem to be smarter about this sort of thing than humans, as usual. Perhaps they get an endorphin rush plus food. Better than what we humans usually get.
