Norwegian black metal band Windir existed only for 10 years before its tragic ending. During those years the band did only 4 albums. Let's rate them from worst to best.

Fantastic band for sure, Windir was one of the bands that really got me into Black Metal alongside Burzum, Nokturnal Mortum and Dissection.

The "reason" why Windir use so many uplifting melodies is because they use Norwegian folk music, some songs have even directly integrated classic Norwegian folk melodies. It's a very nationalistic band, one that makes you proud and feel strong in another way than maybe the more adrenaline pumping metal.

Truely one of the most unique metal Bands and one of my favorites. Love every second in all releases but if I need to choose, I would pick Arntor and Likferd.

With the exeption of "Kampen" I dont understand where the happy melodies are on the Arntor album. Its lots of melodies but they are all melancolic, dark, sad and beatiful. I find Arntor to be a masterpeace that stands heads and shoulders over the other three. And the other three are also amazing to me

I don't know but to me they sound quite joyful compared to other music I listen to. So maybe it's just me.

youre dead right when you say all albums have the same quality. I think Arntor is arguably the best album though, but 1184 has my favourite Windir song, "The Spiritlord"

Totally agree, that Windir has very consistent discography. I would go with Sóknardalr as the best release. Valfar had a really unique style of songwriting.

I actually like all of their albums. Valfar died in my birthday. In that time i did not even knew this band.

Not yet, because Enslaved is still an active band. So, at the moment I'm focusing on bands which have quit so the whole discography can be included.

I don’t really considered windir as melodic black metal as well Valfar hated the black metal scene of that time. It’s more folk based to me especially when you get to under the lyrics

Arntor is their best work in my view. Do not get me wrong Jerry all their records are good but this kicks ass. Overall it was a good band until Valfar passed away. Then the band fade away with this Vreid new title. I mean all the energy , all the magic was with Valfar. Then the band lost it. He was very talented musician.
