Located in the East Anglian county of Norfolk is the UK's most easterly city - Norwich.
Situated on the banks of the River Wensum, close to its confluence with the River Yare, it was subjected to multiple attacks from the Danes in Saxon times. In the 9th century Vikings captured Norwich and killed Edmund, the last king of East Anglia. A few years later it was reclaimed by Alfred the Great. More attacks from the Danes followed in the 11th century prior to the Norman Invasion of 1066. Danish influence can be seen today in some of the street names, e.g. Pottergate, Finkelgate ('gata' being Old Norse for 'street').
Following the Norman Invasion William the Conqueror ordered the construction of Norwich Castle. The stone keep was built around the beginning of the 12th century, and remains a prominent landmark of the city centre to this day. It should be noted that the keep was refaced with Bath Stone in the 19th century.
Norwich Market was founded towards the end of the 11th century to supply Norman merchants and settlers moving to the area. It was set up around the street currently known as Gentleman's Walk (featured shortly after the 3-minute mark), where it has remained for over 900 years, making it one of the oldest, as well as one of the largest, outdoor markets in the country.
Norwich Cathedral was completed in the mid 12th century. Barring a few subsequent repairs due to riots and wind damage, much of the original Norman structure is intact. Norwich was granted a royal charter by Richard I (a.k.a. Richard the Lionheart) in 1194, and with it, city status.
During the Medieval era, Norwich was the second-largest city in England behind London. Flemish settlers arrived between the 14th and 16th centuries, introducing the manufacture of woollen products. Norwich was a major centre for trade, where goods were transported across the North Sea via the Port of Norwich which stood on the River Wensum. Today the port is considered defunct.
In the 17th century Norwich experienced a golden age for cloth manufacture. However, its textile industry actually declined with the Industrial Revolution as other towns became fierce competition, particularly in Yorkshire and Lancashire. Nevertheless, industry in the city continued into the 20th century, including shoe making, aircraft design and manufacturing. It has also been a producer of English mustard since the 1860s when Jeremiah Colman's company, Colman's of Norwich, moved from a small village near Norwich to the city itself. The factory closed in 2020.
Norwich is represented in sport by Norwich City Football Club. They are nicknamed 'The Canaries' in reference to the Norwich Canary which was introduced into England in the 16th century. The team's yellow and green colours are a nod to this avian connection. Norwich City are owned by majority shareholders Delia Smith and her husband Michael Wynn-Jones. Delia Smith is famous in Britain for being a celebrity cook, and for slagging off her club's own fans at half-time.

You did a really good job and got a gorgeous sunny day for the walk. Norwich always looks so much better in sunlight!😍 Would have been great if you'd walked by the castle as it's a pretty major tourist attraction. But I guess it must be difficult to know which way to cover all the most attractive streets without going back on the same route. I love the timing of arriving at the cathedral when the clock chimed... awesome!😎 I'll share it on Twitter!👍

Much appreciated, thanks! As for the castle I checked it out beforehand and whilst the views are great it basically takes you into a dead end. Not sure if it was due to Covid where they've made a lot of things one-way, or whether it was always like that. So I went for skirting around the castle and through the grounds instead. But yeah, Norwich is a great city and pretty unique!

@@4KExplorer Yes, it might be to do with Covid rules. A lot of annoying stuff like that going on. The castle is undergoing a large renovation on the inside too, a lot of it is closed off to the public. I think there's still a big crane there. Some of the one way confusion might be to do with that too.

Be careful if planning a visit to the murderers pub, i know of a few people who got really ill after drinking there. Maybe they are failing to clean the lines often enough.
