Thank-you for all your efforts. I can’t help but think of my Mum and Dad and the life we had in Norwich before immigrating to Canada in the late 60’s. Your videos touch a lot of people. Thnx again, Nick.
Chamberlins sounds like a wonderful store - fancy being escorted to the different departments - and so much older than Selfridges! What a twist of fate that all those devastating fires occurred on the same date, August 1st! Adding these fascinating facts makes the video stand out even more. Thank you, it was really interesting.
Wilkinson's was a top-quality leather goods shop, and as far as I recall, it was still going into the 1980s, if not later. I have a leather belt I bought there in about 1969, for about £1/10/0, and I use it still.
John I love your video's I love Norwich, originally from lowestoft, my parents often brought me up to Norwich as child, in the 50's and 60's, It maybe this that allows me to watch your videos of some of the old much changed Norwich and I instinctively know what the now picture is going to be. I joined the RAF from Norwich in 1970, returning and living with my future wife in 1972, we left the area in 1977 returning from Germany in 1993, not wanting to live anywhere else. I remember thinking how Norwich had changed, when we left we had a cattle market when we returned we had castle mall !, At times watching your videos I think somewhere has not changed, until I see the area from the 60's/70's and think i remember that. Thanks for the Videos
I was a student in Norwich in the late 1970s and struggle to remember the businesses that were there at that time. I do recall ‘Head In The Clouds’ which was not too far away and the wonderful Thorns DIY ironmongers on Dove Street. I still possess a saw I bought in there!
Another superb edition to your channel ,I can recall BB Adams and the numerous cassettes purchased from there ,some of which i still have ,there was also a store in Wymondham ,having walked past buildings in Norwich hundreds of times ,I now take an added interest and appreciate their significance ,great channel
Well put together. Always look forward to these. Great info on Guildhall. Loved the grate giving light to the dungeon. Am going to peer down next time I pass...ha. There, the lanes and market my favourite zone. Hello from Thailand.
I really appreciate all the research you put into your videos and the lengths you go to make sure the facts and photographic material are accurate and relevant. Another very interesting and fascinating topic. Thank you.
It appears that much of the old Chamberlin's is about to be demolished. I think that the facade will remain, but a shame to loose such a historic part of Norwich's commercial architectural history :(
Another very valuable video full of historical facts and images. I 💖 that hall. What an amazing life it has had. So many changes of identity from within. It never ceases to amaze me at what a brilliant architects there were- and building technics used to create such beauty. Was the cause of all those fires ever discovered? Arson? Seems very suspect all at the same time. Thanks John. Loved this a lot. 👍🇳🇱🙋🇳🇿
Thanks as always, John. Was Jarrolds in business at the same time as Chamberlins? Despite the passage of time and the changing commercial landscape a lot of this part of Norwich was easy to recognise in the older photographs.
That's got me thinking. I checked the Jarrolds website and it goes way back in time too ( a very informative website www.jarrold.co.uk/about-jarrold/history). Maybe I'll do a video about Jarrolds at some point.
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich deffo do Jarrolds vid, so much history with that company, not being from Norwich originally, I seem to remember? Bit like Deila lol
BB Adams was a cut-price shop that sold some very dodgy stuff, I remember buying a tin of lobster 'bisque' for 5 p and being extremely ill after it. The fact that the tin was rusty should have been a warning sign that went un-heeded.
Trams were finished in 1935, but yes, you're right, some remained beyond that point. I seem to remember a lot of rails in Yarmouth, but that may be irrelevant!
The BB Adams store you show isn't the one in the Leeds building Society building. There were two BB Adam's stores, the Leeds one sold electronics and the other one - in what is now Philp Browne - sold food, including on one occasion unlabled tins containing either peas or beans. Originally St Giles ran into London Street and Exchange Street wasn't there. Not sure when Exchange Street was created though. Oh and the teenager walking up the hill past BB Adams looks very much like me - could it be?
@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Yes, Derek is correct. In 1983 I was employed at the lower, electrical shop in their TV/HiFi repair department. I sometimes had to pop up the hill to the other shop. In 1984 both shops relocated to King Street. I will see if I can locate a photo of the shop that used to be Spalls...
I worked in the upper BB Adams In the early 80’s, evenings and on Saturdays, you are correct it isn’t the correct one in the film. There were warehouses out the back down Labour in vain alley and it was part of my job to work the cardboard bale machine, Warmangers would turn up to take away the bales of cardboard. Happy days.
I found a photograph wallet supplied by 'George Gregory (Photography) Ltd., 22 Goat Lane, Norwich.' This address puzzled me as it is listed in the 1960 Kelly's Norwich Directory correctly as Lower Goat Lane. Any thoughts as to why this odd address - ?
The is Lower Goat Lane and Upper Goat Lane. I can only guess that Lower Goat Lane was sort of locally known just as Goat Lane, but I've not heard that before.
I was recently in Norwich, but didn't have time to try and find out....John, could you possibly direct me to the best place to find out please, in readiness for my next visit. This kind of snippet information is great for an historical fiction writer has myself... If i could i would love to use it in my current book, which is based in Norwich.@@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich
At 1.13 ... 'Outside Chamberlins, air raid precautions were being put in place ... ' ... and a foto of roadworks being carried out was shown. WTFK ??? Pls DON'T dramatize yr dialogue with misleading fotos. The simple factual truth is sufficient.
I use source material, in this case from the actual photographer. So viewers got, and will always get the simple actual truth. May I remind you, or perhaps tell you, that I make these videos in order to raise money to enhance the way the city looks. I don't do it to get abuse from you. Therfore I would like an apology, otherwise I shall report you and block you. Happy New Year Gordon, please make your resolution to be polite.
