Isabelle Adjani (played Lucy Harker) is the only actress or actor in history to win five César Awards. She is 64 now. I watched this during the covid quarantine in our country which is still ongoing as I write this comment. The outdoor dining scene where the man said we are all infected by the plague and we're here to enjoy our last days, something like that, gave me goosebumps.

The late night dinner scene in this Dracula adaptation is off the charts. Perfect synergy between Kinski's acting and Herzog's direction. In other scenes, it takes its time. But that's the kinda movie it is, quiet, slow, mesmerizing.

I can't wait for this blu ray release, i always enjoy when Jonathan leaves the guesthouse for castle Dracula, i love those beautiful landscapes and waiting, because you know you'll creaking door opening and question "Graf Dracula?". The scene when Kinski walks down the dark corridor and then comes to Harker's chamber still truly terrifies me.

@seamus33333
@seamus33333 4 года назад
I tend to agree, but just to play devil's advocate: many elements of storytelling change based on the social context of the time. Not to mention, several depictions of vampires even before this version of Nosferatu came out depicted a much more charming, appealing (though not sparkling) version of the vampire, such as Dracula (1931). That movie came out very shortly after the original Nosferatu, but is still vastly different. So I try to avoid "supposed to be's."

I found Max Schrek's count Orlak to be an apparition, something made out of shadows than could only materialize in your worst nightmares. Kinski's Dracula is a stronger presence, in the diner scene with Harker I felt as though I was sitting next to him and made feel the same chills as Harker at that moment. I don't know if I made my point clear enough, but I found Herzog's Nosferatu more invasive, and therefore, scarier than Murnau's original.

Nosferatu is gibberish. I'm Romanian and that doesn't mean anything in my language (where the word allegedly came from). The traditional Romanian word for vampire is strigoi, although most people say vampir cause of the Western influence on the language. I have a theory though. The name Nosferatu was first used in the late 1800s when some French guy came to Transylvania and wrote an article. But not understanding Romanian he wrote down some gibberish he thought he heard. I think it's actually Necuratul, which means "the unclean one" when said literally or "the unholy" one. It's usually an euphemism for the Devil itself, not just a vampire. What really bugged me about this film was the goof when the sailor said something like "it was hard sailing through the Caspian sea". Wtf? The Caspian sea is nowhere near Romania. Romania has an exist to the BLACK sea. And even so I find this sea travelling kind of ridiculous. The now Romanian region of Transylvania(wasn't part of Romania back then) is still way far off from the Black Sea. I don't get the sea part. Did they just navigate through some river (it shows peasants on a river before with the coffins), then the Danube and then into the sea? That's just going east instead of west. Or from the Black Sea to the Marmara one, Mediterranean, Atlantic through Gibraltar, and going north around the Iberian peninsula? That's going round half the continent navigating through two rivers, two big seas, a small one and the ocean. From Transylvania it would have been much shorter and easier to go on land and then just cross the English channel. As a geography buff I could never understand the sea part in all this narrative.

I liked this movie...until the end. Herzog did a great job of build-up of tension and atmosphere...and then gives us no payoff. Dracula's henchman presumably leaves with the plague-infested dirt (the movie seemingly forgets about him after Dracula gives his instructions, and we have no clue what happens to him), Lucy's plan seems all thought out, and then doesn't seem to work (Jonathan's still a vampire--was Lucy trying to save him or not?) and Van Helsing... Perhaps Herzog meant to leave room for a sequel...but the sequel that WAS made (and not by him) has Kinski's Dracula come back, which makes Lucy's actions meaningless. And of course, Van Helsing as a doddering old fool who's a skeptic of vampires? Was there a reason for Herzog to miss the point of his character entirely? Just to make Lucy look better (even though the ending makes her look dumb, too...because Jonathan's STILL A VAMPIRE and free to rampage)? Great movie with a bad ending.
@TheRacistsMustDie
@TheRacistsMustDie 9 лет назад
RushLimborg I agree about Renfield, but I didn't really mind the failure of Lucy's plan. I don't think Herzog missed the point of Van Helsing, but by turning him into a skeptic he manages (and perhaps means) to polarize the theme of faith against science in the film.

I've tried to watch this film on perhaps half a dozen occasions, each time drawn back to reassess my opinion in the face of someone elses praise, and each time my toes have curled at its gauche amateurishness and pretentious self-indulgence. Had the poster told you "I had to watch it through my fingers" or "A horrifying exercise in gratuitous bad taste" it would have comfortably beat the trade descriptions act, but not for the reasons you might assume. I suspect only those with the strongest stomachs will ever see it through it entire run time, and I haven't managed it yet. On the plus side though, Kinski does looks every inch the crypt haunting ghoul, but to be fair you could say that about every flick he has ever appeared in. 😂

You could certainly make a strong case for it. I do love Dracula (1958) though, that one might be my favourite. I’ll be frank, I think the ‘31 version is somewhat weak, at least the American version anyway. Not a bad film but not great either, and certainly not Tod Brownings best film. And it’s not as if any other Dracula film besides the ‘77 TV series and the Coppola version have stuck to the source material, so judged on its own terms and separate from its Silent film progenitor, Nosferatu is an absolute masterpiece!

It’s not one I love because it makes some people think the vampire is called Nosferatu, no doubt in part thanks to that bloody SpongeBob episode 🤣 It’s just like how a lot of people to this day still think Frankenstein is the creature and not Victor. The original German title translates to Nosferatu: Phantom of the Night, which of course would then translate to *Vampire: Phantom of the Night.* Much better.

Should have gotten William DeFoe to play as him considering he plays in the film & already played a great Count Orlok already!!!! Don't fix something that isn't broken is all im saying but hopefully im wrong!!!!! It all depends on how they film this new movie & make him look in certain ways & scenes otherwise Sarsgard casting is going to complely ruin this movie!!!!
