This review is one of the top five videos I've made. Chained Echoes is an old school RPG reminiscent of older titles, but can it stand up to modern standards? Check out my review of this 2022 title.
I really like your review! The sound quality, they way you edited the video, the vocabulary used, references and short history lessons, is what made me watch the whole thing. And yes, he was right to say that we should think of the games as we remember them not what they really are like. Did this with a few old games and was surprised how my brain made me remeber them as better than they were, in terms of graphics, mechanics and what-not. I've tested the game on a very low end 2in1 laptop with Intel Celeron N4000 with 4GB RAM (SingleChannel) and the game ran flawlessly, of course. A very good game for even "potato" hardware. Wish you great success in the following reviews you will do, and in life as well!
I agree. Haven’t finish the game yet (40+ hours in), but it is already one of my favorite of all time. I’m recomending it to everyone. So nice to see a recent review of the game! All the others I saw were from close to the release and they always mention the crystals (which weren’t so great) and a few bugs. The current version is so much better!
I loved chained echoes quite a bit. Its a great first effort from a new dev. 7 maybe even 8 out of 10. Massively overrated but it doesnt mean its bad. The claim is that its a masterpiece but i would hope being really good is good enough. If this dev collaborated with a professional writer...i think we could actually get a masterpiece. Especially in the character and dialogue department. Just needs some punching up. And on a 2nd attempt refining these already excellent RPG mechanics...could be onto something generationally outstanding. Excellent video though. Easy sub.
Agreed. it's a good game. Great ideas, fun combat, nice art direction, etc. But it badly needs a good writer. It constantly suffers from, to borrow the term this video used, "nostalgia bait". Every corner there's like a reference to other games and other franchises. Every major event in the story had me thinking "Oh this is the X equivalent of X in xenogears/berserk/etc." I mean, there's a literal gundam in the game, lol.
@belldrop7365 absolutely right. To say its derivative is a given. Did i enjoy it despite this? Yeah. But it's not where it could be and its held back by the writing throughout.
I just beat it last night and today got 100% on the reward board... and I want more. Felt like it just began, but going back to the early areas I realized how much and how long I've been playing. So fun and I love getting new moves. ❤
This dev is maybe the best sprite artist I've ever seen, but his dialogue is elementary school quality and the music was pretty average. Doing this game as a solo project was a mistake, but give this dev a team that can cover his weaknesses and he'll make the next modern-day masterpiece.
The Dialogue IS actually the best of its class and way ahead of Sea of Stars, Terra memoria and Eiyuden Chronicles which all Had a real author and real big Team. Maybe its the english localisation thats Lackluster idk but the original German Text is VEEEERY WELL written and waaaaaay better than mentioned titles
@@kewa_design Indeed, I was talking specifically about the English localization. None of the other games you mention had good scripts either; I would put them all on the same level with this game English-wise. I can’t attest to the German versions of any of them.
