***** Or he can call the movie and the acting in it like he sees it. A man's death doesn't automatically make movies he was in good. Even though I personally thought this movie was "okay."
I really hate those people who go on this review and other robin williams movie reviews that NC has made, to complain about how daug should get hit by a truck and feel bad about these. why should he? these are done YEARS before robin died. its not even about these reviews, its because people are hypocrites. their macabre public mourning is not for the dead actor, its for them selves. and thats why they feel need to bash anyone who has ever said anything bad about the dead actor.
MrAnimepredator It's kinda like the fact that I still laugh at Williams' comedy (the ones that are actually funny of course) instead of sitting there and moping. I feel like that's what he would've wanted, tbh; for people to still find his comedy funny.
4:16: To be fair, NC, I think it's most likely that because Jack was sheltered throughout most of his life, him wearing pajamas and having a teddy bear while being 10 years old (while looking like a 40 year old) isn't really that much out of the ordinary for this 10 year old, considering his age and how he was raised. I agree with the rest of your criticism of the movie though.
I honestly liked this movie a lot. I still do. The criticism about him sleeping with a doll, even at age 10, or sleeping with his parents, while not typical of 10 year olds...his parents coddle him. Treat him like he's even younger than he is. They are protective, and likely didn't follow typical parenting to break such habits. He's their boy, with a rare affliction, and they are trying to keep him young, despite his physically aging body. Yes, the plot is strange. But I don't get the hate for it. It's not bad by any means. His response to the principle were outlandish, yes. Because he has no social skills, Critic. He's been cooped up in his damn house all his life.
Look, Robin Williams being dead does not make the Critic a terrible person for criticizing his performance in movies. Whether Williams is dead or alive has no effect whatsoever on whether this or Patch Adams or Flubber is a crappy movie. Yes, it might seem like the Critic is showing disrespect for the dead, but think about it: these reviews were done *before* Robin Williams died. How can they show disrespect for the dead if the subject of concern was alive at the time? Unless the Critic is a time-traveling monster who looked into the future, saw that Robin Williams was going to die, and then wrote negative reviews for his movies simply because of that, I don't think he did a single thing wrong. We all need to remember, he only critiqued Williams' acting in some of his films; he never actually insulted him as a person.
Critic makes fun of John Hughes after his death: No one gives half a damn. Critic makes fun of Robin Williams several years before his death: Everyone and their mother cry.
LOL I'm pretty sure carrots don't have ANY advertising budget. I don't think I've ever seen an ad - on TV or anywhere else - for any vegetable, unless you count V8...
Robin Williams was an incredible actor and comedian. The Nostalgia Critic never said anything contrary to that. Movies like Jack, Flubber and especially Patch Adams shows how much directors and screen writer can mess up someone's brilliant career. The NC says at the beginning of most of reviews how Robin Williams is a talented performer, but the problem came from these lazy, confused and awkward scripts. He doesn't criticize Williams acting, but his lines or what he is forced to do by people who don't understand the man's gifts. When you give Robin Williams the opportunity to truly act, you get movies like the Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting. When you don't, Jack happens. It's the system that's at fault, not the actor. And I think the NC has always appreciated that.
The preacher at Jonathan Creek church camp had a daughter with an affliction like this. She grew at an accelerated rate. When I went, about 10 years ago, she was 7, but her body had aged to the point that she looked like a 17 year old. However, even though she physically matured at a much faster rate, she mentally and emotionally matured at a slower rate. If this is the same affliction that Jack has, then it explains why he was so much different than other 10-year-olds.
CommanderDuck TheCredd I'm very aware about what that is, but there are so many people on the Internet who are saying "Too soon," in a literal sense, even though he died nearly a year ago. Please don't speak to me as if I'm the dumbest person on the planet, it's very disrespectful and I don't appreciate it.
this movie would have been a lot more touching and impactful if jack died at the end of old age. not that I WANT him to die, it would have just felt like a better ending to a fucking weird movie. scratch that nevermind, this is just too odd to even think about.
this should of been stretched out as a TV series, the idea alone can offer a slow aging of Jack as he develops a relationship with more and more people.
Well... this is kinda awkward... On one hand we have a mediocre movie trying to desperately play on our heartstrings with a leading role by a recently dead actor that was good and likeable in his core... on the other hand we have a several years old movie review by an indie comic, that cynically points out major flaws in the most insensitive way possible... Look... I'm pretty sure Doug liked R. Williams as an actor. Heck... he even said it in some of his Nostalgia Critic reviews. NC had no idea this man would commit suicide YEARS LATER after this satirical sketch, so please contain your comments to a reasonable level... thanks.
Exactly. Besides, there's no reason you can't talk about dead people. Robin Williams was a fantastic actor, but he picked some bad movies. Simple as that.
TheUltraDude Their just trying to stop the bunch of other people from bringing up the same stuff. Other people obviously aren't going to ignore it (just read below) so it's better to try to deal with it like that other than the some other people are.
Insult comedy and black comedy is insulting by default. NC's criticisms of Jack are valid and make sense - Robin's trying so hard to be perfect and innocent that it just makes him look moronic; Robin's actions don't make sense even for a highly-sheltered 10-year-old kid.
I don't think I'd classify that as a "doll", more like a "stuffed animal". Which I suppose could be called a "stuffed animal doll", but that's really splitting hairs. Besides, don't most guys refer to dolls as "action figures"? I also knew plenty of 10 year olds who wore pajamas; or at least got popular character themed pajamas for Christmas and/or their birthday every year. If Nana buys it for you, your parents will make d@mn sure you wear it.
KnightsaysNi "Stimpy" (at that time in the tail end of his Nickelodeon popualrity, post-John Kricfalusi/Spumco with Ren Hoek:"), an action figure? Neither that nor doll, maybe stuffed toy for boy tastes.
Steve Carras In regard to Stimpy, I meant he would be referred to as a stuffed animal. The rest of my comment was intended to be a more general blanket statement in regard to other toys and such. Sorry for the confusion.
Love seeing Stimpy (of Ren and.. fame on Nickelodeon) in his doll form in his 1990s heydey, even if at the end and after Nick terminated it, in Robin's arms. But Doug's right about a 10 year old having this..it's one thing that adult Robin Williams acts like a 10 year old..then even YOUNGER....? This reminds me of F.Scott FitzGerarld's "Benjamin Button" (which, twelve years after Jack, and ten years after Robin Williams's Patch Adams and What Dreams may Come (both from 1998), in 2008 got made into a Brad Pitt moive), because of reverse aging, y'know.. [[blah]]..enjoy the holiday seasons, friends!
His mother's house is where he stays, He's way to young and he got laid At 10 years old his life's a breeze Selling kids porno, what a sleaze He's still obsessed with his toy dolls, see? It gets real dark in therepy He checks his list off everyday, Of the bullies he will blow away Jack, Jack, He's a psycho maniac Jack, Jack, He's a psycho maniac
When I was 14 years old I asked my mom to sleep in her bed because of nightmares and slept with a stuffed duck...Then again, I was going through a lot at that time ,so I don't know if i can speak for everyone.
4:45- Lmao, I would love it if Harry Potter had been that crazy. While I understand some of Nostalgia Critic's points , I still found Williams' performance largely enjoyable and heartfelt (And NOBODY could play Popeye like he did). It was kind of like Benjamin Button in reverse. Also, cooties would be the most hilarious form of biological weaponry going by children's logic :)
I love Nostalgia Critic. He's clever, funny, and all around charismatic. But I can't respect the guys opinions concerning what defines a 'good' movie. When you praise "Sky High", the illustrious image of corny cliche but compare "Jack" (something that at least TRIED to be unique) to Freaky Friday, I just can't take you seriously.
*****, I disagree. Charisma has no pretense. Charismatic people can be total twats and still command respect. All you have to do is be 'generally liked' for whatever (or despite whatever) reason. I think most people agree he's a cool guy. Something sets him apart from the crowd. If there wasn't, he wouldn't have gotten this far. What I like most about him is the very thing you seem to despise; his confidence. He works hard on his videos, does it all with the intention of making people laugh (and paying the bills), and if some people don't' like that, 'tough' he seems to say. You definitely have good points. His skits seem to have been performed by a monkey and produced by a chimpanzee with a hangover, but that's all purely subjective. His confidence shouldn't be tied to success or failure, but by the effort given, and his work drips with (occasionally sulfur scented) effort that makes me smile despite the smell (insert 'your mom joke' here). My problems stem from his stance as a 'reviewer', and to be honest, I'm even more conflicted after seeing his "Top Ten Cliches". He has a firm grasp of cinema principles, yet shows bias in its application. Perhaps he does it solely for entertainment. But he hands out 'recommendations' frequently. He's trying to be 'nothing but laughs', yet 'a serious reviewer' all at the same time. Can't have your cake and eat it too Doug. I digress. As I said previously, so long as he entertains me, I'll continue watching, but I'll never base my cinematic appraisal or confide in a show about what to watch when it straddles between 'serious' and 'goofy' without firm context.
***** Viking102938 You guys are aware that the Nostalgia Critic is just a character, right? Doug Walker himself sometimes has different opinions to the ones he expresses as the Nostalgia Critic purely for the sake of comedy. He admitted to loving Hook, which he tore into, and he made a Doug Walker Top 11 Hottest Animated Women list to demonstrate how he and the Nostalgia Critic are two different people. And his overall goal is of course to entertain. He admits he's a screw up at times, but he and Rob work hard at making these episodes as good as they can be. While he'll take time now and again to be serious about how bad a movie is, he's still going to try and make it funny. One way or another, he's always very good at getting his point across, even if you disagree with him. And his popularity speaks for itself. One last thing. When you want to argue that the Nostalgia Critic is wrong and that a movie he dislikes is good, Doug will often reply with something like "Yeah, that's fair. Enjoy it, man." He doesn't see his opinion as absolute and the same goes for the quality of his videos. He's been doing this for a long time and he is good at it, but if you criticise his work he can still offer a humble apology.
***** I liked him back when he only did reviews like this. Nowadays, with Malcolm and that other chick,it's really.... really.... painful! I only laughed one entire time at his Ghost Dad review, but at these old ones,I laughed all the time! Something changed about him,and sucked out all the funny.
Until a couple weeks ago, I hadn't been exposed to a Copolla movie. In my senior English class we read the book Heart of Darkness and afterwards, decided to watch Apocalypse Now to compare the two. I thought it was great. It's hard to believe the same person who made that film also made this.
Well, I checked the wikipedia page for Jack, and it turns out that it was produced by Ford Coppola and Fred... Fred Fuchs? FRED FUCHS? Fred Fuchs!! Oh my god... Fred Fuchs...! Ohhh my god, it's Fred Fuchs... ughhhh, Fred Fuchs
Now I feel heartbroken not only because I watched Jack three days before Robin Williams passed away but also because it's hard to believe that he's gone and he'll be missed. =(
Doug made a very touching Robin tribute video just after he died. It's possible to poke fun at people you like, y'kno. Also, one of the kids is wearing a Black Flag shirt LOL
wait a second so he is physically 40 so his brain should be fully developed. even though he only has 10 years of life experience he should think like a 40 year old.
Joel Wilson That's not necessarily true. If you were born in a coma and awoke fourty years later, you wouldn't think like a fourty year old. You'd know as much as a newborn would.
TheCryptidman yes but he didn't wake up in a coma. He Is developing 4 times as fast as any human being. This applies for mentally as well as physically. The only explanation is that it is only his physical self developed but this makes no sense into why it is only physical development. I understand where you are coming from though thanks for the contribution :)
This isn't completely bull shit. There is actually several different disorders that cause different growth disorders. People who grow in height and generally die in their twenties at heights of over eight feet with odd proportions that can not support their organs or skeletal structure. There is another disorder where a child's organs and body can age scarily quickly causing them by age 8 to look like an elder. Though this movie sort of did turn it into a cruel fucking joke. He doesn't look like somebody with either disorder, he looks like a creepy old man pretending to be a little boy.
This has nothing to do with those conditions you've mentioned. This is actually called Werner's syndrome, where your DNA fails to repair, and you literally age prematurely- since aging is not some God's or nature's plan, but simply a flaw in programming! WErner's syndrome doesn't manifest itself this early (I don't know if there are any exceptions), but another similar disease is progeria, however kids who have progeria do not look like nbormal fifty-year olds
Okay I guess no one is going to say it, so Im gonna go ahead -- babies born several months earlier cant look like that. Not only that they are smaller in size, but they are also covered in fur. The embryo develops some animalistic features while in the womb and then around the 8th month it loses them.
Yeah, the idea, has potential, I mean, Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome is a real disorder-though it's very different to how the film portrays it. Which wouldn't be a huge issue considering when the film was made and the people that would have wanted to see it, but Williams doesn't play him like a ten year old as NC points out, it wouldn't have been that difficult for Williams to actually spend time with his younger co-stars and take on their traits, like Tom Hanks did in Big.
In Coppola’s defense, he probably assumed Jack had some form of arrested development (ironically), simply from being sequestered from kids his own age his entire life. My issues with the film have to do mainly with Robin William’s over the top performance in some places. Like the constant references to boners... what the fuck?
I truly hope nostalgia critic does a memorial review for Robin Williams, He was one of my favorite parts. And what better way to celebrate do what he did best, make jokes.
So, he ages about 4x quicker than normal. OK, I'll buy it (your science makes no sense, but I'll ignore that). That means his body reaches physical maturity about 4x faster. So, by age 5, he should have the physical capability of a 20 year old. Jack, in reality, should be having a mid-life crisis. At 10. He's the equivalent of a 40 year old, so he should be dead around age 20-25. I think that would be quite the interesting movie! The extremely sad juxtaposition (wow, I used that word outside of an English essay. Odd) of youth and childhood enthusiasm mixed with the horrible feeling that your life is half over, that from here on out Death is closing his grasp on you before everyone else around you reaches their prime, or even gets into High School. Oscar material? You bet! (Robin, call me! I'll start the rewrite immediately!) On the other hand, dick jokes. Jack would've had the sex drive of a 20 year old at 5. Imagine giving "The Talk" to a freaking 5 year old! Holy crap! Finally, an appropriate audience for when Katy Perry was on Sesame Street! Yeah, remember Katy Perry on Sesame Street? Let's just go back there for a moment. Google it, I know I will. I'll give you a minute to... relive that. ...done? Yeah, me too.
Yes! Honestly, I don't think Hollywood should just make the same 10 '80s movies over and over again, but take movies that had a lot of potential and just... try again.
