As you saw in a previous video, we had major failures with Hilborn mechanical fuel pumps. We tried three different ones that had new O-ring seals, but the internal components decided to fail, the joys of vintage speed parts. We could take a gamble and keep buying used pumps, but at this time I do not want to take that chance. What I really need is a modern pump and all the components to make the fuel injection work, but that is not in the budget right now.
So, now what? I decided to stick with the old school vintage drag racing theme and if I can't go injection on methanol, the next best thing is a tunnel ran, a pair of classic Holley carburetors, and a fiberglass shark scoop with a healthy dose of 114 octane race fuel. Holly to the rescue! When I needed a tunnel ram and carbs for my 521 cubic inch big block powered 1968 Ford Thunderbird, I called Holley. This situation is no different, so I called Holley, told them what I needed, and they had everything in stock ready to ship. I ordered a pair of classic 450 cfm mechanical secondary carbs and a Holley electric fuel pump with a regulator. These awesome carbs will sit on top of a vintage "breadbox" tunnel ram and topped off with a fiberglass shark scoop. I have no doubt these carbs will work well on Jimmy's real fine 409 small block Chevy! The J&J Speed and Machine "Jumping Jack Flash" nostalgia front engine dragster looks really period correct with this setup and I am excited to hear it roar to life!
Jimmy and I are ready to hit the dragstrip to get our licensing passes in so we can go drag racing! Was this the setup we initially planned? No, but you can't give up and always have to have a plan B. Besides, a vintage tunnel ram setup is absolutely old school cool and like with my Thunderbird, I have no doubt these Holley carbs will perform well!
