Hey Booktube! Time for more book reviews and recommendations! This time I'm talking about books that didn't get a 5 star rating (more like 3 or 4!) but that are still worth mentioning!

I love this idea because in real life as a non-booktuber I would recommend a book I read even if I gave it 3 or 4 stars.

Long Way Down would be an awesome one act play. I could totally see it taking off in the vein of Shadowbox and The Empty Chair. High school drama programs would eat it up.

I really like that you are talking about books that aren't brought up as often or aren't that popular. Also, I LOVE and agree that even if a book isn't 5⭐ or a favorite, they are still worth talking about.

Thank you SO MUCH for creating these videos. I'm fairly new to BookTube and already noticed that the most popular channels all tend to hype the same books over and over. I've started watching the 'Best of' videos from past years to try and get some variety in suggestions. You're video is just what I was looking for!

I just finished A House At the Bottom of A Lake! It was soooo eerie. I had such an unsettled, uncomfortable feeling while reading it. There's just so much dread. I loved it!
@aless.andra9620
@aless.andra9620 3 года назад
As someone who also just finished that book, I'm curious did you interpret the story literally or metaphorically? I saw so many people hate the book because mystery didn't make sense, which confused me since the story is not supposed to be interpreted as is, and rather should be a beautiful and haunting metaphor for a first love.
@mandysmorgueofhorror
@mandysmorgueofhorror 3 года назад
@@aless.andra9620 I think I saw it both ways. I think overall the environment really unsettled me and I thought Malerman did a wonderful job creating an atmosphere thick with dread. I didn't think the story needed to make sense - life (and horror) doesn't really make sense. Am I making sense? lol

Awesome reccomendations! So many that sound interesting. 😁 I find Books that average 3-4 stars are my sweet spot. I find a lot of 5 star not worth the hype and anything below a 3 not worth my time. But 3-4 is just perfect to be entertaining without too many expectations.

I've read 4/6 of the Forward collection and Ark is by far my favorite. I've been exploring short stories since I read and loved The Yellow Wallpaper and I think I can confirm my love for the format since I gave Ark 5 stars. To give some perspective on how much I enjoyed it, I gave Emergency Skin a 3.5, You Have Arrived at Your Destination a 2.5, and I only read 4 pages of Summer Frost (I think that's the title?). I plan on revisiting your video talking about the whole collection once I'm done to compare our opinions

A house at the bottom of the lake is a misunderstood book. It Is not horror and the bad marketing is I think the reason the book does not get so many good reviews. It is a psychological study and metaphore of the first love. And I went to it as a horror, but it isn't. When you think about the things in the story - house, lake, water, and the ending. All these things are just metaphors for things young lovers go threw. I won't spoil anything but you can Google it up. And the book is brilliant, it just isn't a horror. :) Nice vid, love the recommendations.

I wouldn't call A House At the Bottom Of The Lake horror but then I don't know what else to call it either. See thats the thing about these weird novellas, one just fails to put them in a category which is also largely responsible for them being somewhat underrated. Any book that transcends genre boundaries is harder to fall under somebody's radar, except a few stray readers like yourself and me

I have The Contact since september (my library keeps postponing the due date) and I was waiting for a push to grab it. I read A House At The End Of The Lake this week, and as a diver myself I hated that aspect of the book! Everything was sooooooo wrong!!! + I found The Poet X just ok, but I really disliked the audiobook, mostly the attitude I guess.

Would you ever consider making a video about authors you won´t read anymore because off things they said or views they have that you don´t share? Problematic authors as it were.

@@aislinrose1 I have watched those. But I would be very interested to know more about authors she won't read anymore because they're problematic. With like a bit more of a background or reason why or what they've done.
@BookswithEmilyFox

I honestly probably won't. It just attracts drama and I don't want to give them more attention. Some authors would be J K Rowling, Jay Kristoff, Dan Simmons (although I will read Hyperion for an already planned video), etc.
