Not A Very Grand Design: Major Water Damage!

We weren't planning on doing another video on the 5th wheel for a while. But due to the crappy design from the factory on our 2018 Grand Design 230RL, we ended up having some major water damage. Once we noticed the water we started ripping stuff out until we found the source. We were able to fix the source of the leak and then had to rebuild everything. I'm sure there was a better way to fix it but I think it's done pretty well. Time will tell. Hope you enjoy the video (I did not enjoy making it)!

How the 2 of you kept your KOOL was amazing!! Jeff, great handyman work. Thank you for sharing. This is a problem that many others are currently experiencing. Hope the 2 of you have a great trip! You both deserve it!! Best regards, Bob from AZ

Thanks! I have a few things to fine tune on the repair but so far it's doing well. I may do another follow up video in a few weeks to cover what improvements I should have made.

You two deserve a medal for all the work you had to put into this project. It’s probably better than new! Thanks for sharing your project 👍

I keep telling myself it is better than spending the extra $75,000 more it would have been for the Brinkley. Shanna keeps reminding me that she was right and we should have got the Brinkley.

$75k is a lot of extra change for an RV. At least you’re got the wherewithal to handle a project of this size and scope. Hopefully, this will be it for a while. We own an Airstream, and I’m always fixing something. Safe travels🤞

So sorry, one saving grace is that unit wasn’t too expensive to purchase. These 10k units are bound to have a few problems. Good thing you’re handy. DIY special l guess. - Good Luck.

Thanks and I agree. This was a debate we had when we bought it. We wanted a smaller fifth wheel. Didn't care about lighter. If they had this floor plan with a Solitude or even regular Reflection trim level we would have paid extra for that. I don't care if it weight 12k pounds instead of 8k. We just liked the floor plan. We went and looked at the Brinkley 3100 and the Alliance 310RL and loved them. But they were both about 6 feet longer than this and way more expensive.

Man nice fix, impressive. Go get a rug and forget the flooring for now, save your money and put it towards getting rid of that bonded leather wrap around seating area. I bet you could design something much better and more practicable. An office desk setup that has a slide out piece that allows to be used as a table and then a small recliner on the other side is an idea.

We have already bought new foam and fabric for the seats. Just need other things to quit breaking so we can get back to that project. We already finished the flooring. Only took four boxes and less than a day to install. It looks good. We will eventually get a video up with it. Also have pictures on our Instagram account.

Rosie and I recently traded off a Solitude for a Brinkley. Coud not be happier. Really built well. We have had it to Alaska for last summer and Yuma for the winter. Soon we are heading to Washington State. Our Solitude had so many problems! My main question to you is what kind of guitar do you play? Burlington Bill busking on the road and here on You-Tube.

Glad you like the Brinkley. We'd love to get one but gotta focus our money into our property for now. I've got a Taylor 110 that we bring with us. I have never actually been good. I just tinker. I keep trying to focus on it and get better and by the time I am getting somewhere, life gets busy and then I have to keep starting over. One day hopefully I can keep with it.

@@JustSimplifying We winter in the LTVA near the proving grounds by Yuma Az. Off grid camping. $185 for seven months. Lots of musicians of all levels. Three times a week. Safe travels to you.

Dang that is cheap! We love the idea of traveling that much but we know in reality we need a home base. Just checked out some of your videos. That's pretty awesome.

Man what a Pain in the ass that looked like. I think I would have tapped out and sent it off for repair. That Red Superduty looks so nice.

Yeah taking it in would have been smarter. If I had a service shop nearby that I trusted I probably would have. And thanks on the truck. We love that thing.

Unfortunately, all rv’s are junk and the worst investment we could ever make. Good luck on your repairs.
@JustSimplifying
@JustSimplifying 24 дня назад
I’m not sure I’d go that far. They are definitely not built the way they should be. I do think I could be a consultant for these companies and help them make a much better RV without adding much costs. But I don’t really consider the RV an investment. It’s a depreciating asset that unlocks other opportunities. I just keep that perspective that we are doing things I would have never guessed possible otherwise.

Hay cheating and recaulking those seam is normal mantises. You need to go around you rig and do that all the time. With all the movement of the road it will fall out and crack. So, you need to recalk it ever so often. Word for the wise.

I understand the necessity to check the silicon and caulk joint. But there is no excuse for having a wall cavity open and exposed on an exterior wall. Especially when it is directly below a gutter. In this case our gutter had gotten clogged during the recent bout of severe storms that we have had rolling through and the overflow washed out the silicon joint. If Grand Design had done the correct thing and ran the exterior wall covering all the way down to the bottom of the floor level, the water would have ran through and at worst gotten trapped behind the fender. Then we could have seen the degraded silicon during the next inspection, removed the fender to clean any mold and check for additional damage, and then fix the silicon joint. There would have been no damage inside the rig. For what Grand Design claims to be as a brand, this is a ridiculous setup. And doing it the correct way would not have added significant weight or cost.

Did they take it in to get fixed? I probably should have but was afraid it would be crazy expensive. Plus we hear to many stories of how long the camper places end up keeping the rig for. We can’t be out of it for that long.
