Heat 4 of the 1980 World Pairs in Krsko, at the Matija Gubec Stadium, sees then World Champion Ivan Mauger struggle to get near Dave Jessup and Peter Collins of England.
Collins, Jessup, Mauger, great names from back in the day. However, one name that was present at every speedway meeting telivised on national TV back then was of course Dave Lanning, who, through his commentating brought speedway even further on to the national stage.
Saw Mauger and Barry Briggs debut in the USA at White Stadium, Pacoima ,California Oct 1968. Both put on a Clinic of how you race Speedway as the Majority of American Riders were using traditional Flattrack/Shorttrack Riding Style which wasn't working so great. The following Friday Night Briggs brought his ESO to Ascot Park in Gardena and Geared for a few exhibition laps on the 1/2 Mile. Americans eventually caught on and we had some great future riders and Champions. Penhall,Bast Brothers,Faria became Well known names in Speedway. Even former TV Star Billy Gray of "Father Knows Best" was a frequent Flyer at Costa Mesa in the later 70's. I'm Old School AMA Style DT Racing but I love Speedway Racing and Ivan Mauger will go down in History as a Mega Star of World Speedway Racing....Ivan passed away April 16, 2018 R.I.P. IVAN
I remember Ivan Mauger racing at Swindon it was a heat 13 against Bob Kilby , Bob out gated him , but Ivans will to win was so strong in him he got under Bob and put Bob in the fence in the pit corner .At the time I was disappointed in him .But now I understand now. Thank Ivan and Bob for all the good memories god bless you both.
Scott Massage I remember seeing Dave Jessop riding in a word final in the 1970s at Wemblry , he was on course to become world champion but then broke down while ahead in his last race !!
One of the rare gates PC made , proper speedway , proper starts , proper sounding bikes with proper riders on em . Loved it back then , wouldn’t waste my money on it now
my cousin took me to my first speedway meeting in spring 1970 it cost 3 shillings for admittance and sixpence for a programme, you could wander through the pits collect autographs talk to riders, hang over the fence to watch racing, get covered in red shale, shout abuse at visiting supporters, LOL yes much better times
