Not Everything's ADHD: 5 Hidden Causes of Adult Attention Problems

Not all problems with attention are ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). The reason it is important is because you don’t want to take stimulants if problems with attention and focus if these problems are not the result of ADHD.
Here are other problems that can cause you to have trouble focusing and concentrating.
Anxiety
Depression
Insomnia
Bipolar disorder
Stress and having too much to do
ADHD starts in childhood but can continue into adulthood. Some people may have ADHD as a child, but never take medication until they get older such as young adulthood. But with this person, they still would have had problems in childhood. It’s probably not ADHD if everything went smoothly from childhood until age 30 or 40 when your life is now more stressful. If you take stimulants to perform better, you can push your mind to do more than it can naturally do. This can result in burnout that looks like unmanageable anxiety or depression.

It doesn't show up later in life but many people who have ADHD but were not diagnosed as a child can be quite bad about noticing their own patterns of dysregulated attention. It can take a long discussion tracing back through their experiences to uncover the truth

That's what I was going to say. If it was up to my dad, I would have nevergotten diagnosed, because I "was fine". However, my mom took me to a psychologist at 15 (and generally at that, not specifically looking to check for ADHD), and they diagnosed me with ADD. I immediately agreed with the diagnosis. I was just lucky enough that my parents did not agree. What's the difference between person the disgnosed kid or teen who takes meds in adulthood and someone who never went to a psychologist as a kid and got diagnosed as an adult? Also, self-awareness of my ADD symptoms as an adult with responsibilities, including 3 kids, CAUSES me anxiety. Taking Adderall helps with the symptoms, which directly reduces the anxiety, because I don't have to rely as much on the OCD I formed as a teen who chose "behavior modification" over meds to get past the inattentiveness of ADD. I now takes meds as an adult and I don't have my mom berating me to take sleeping meds that I don't need.

Usually those who aren't diagnosed as a kid go through life with depression as they wonder what's wrong with them, they get treated for anxiety or depression and nothing fixes things, you keep going through looped cycles, and throughout school and adulthood you're told you're lazy and need to try harder, and when you're already trying and failing, that's when you start to wonder if it's even worth trying anymore considering everyone thinks you're useless... Meanwhile you have undiagnosed condition getting in the way of life that you probably never even considered because people always said you were just to lazy, but when you suddenly get diagnosed, get treated, a curtain lifts, the lights turn on and the path of what you need to be doing in life clears it'self. It's almost like life is easy, we spend so much time trying too figure out systems to do things neurotypical people do, that once our brains are re-wired correctly, it just feels so easy and natural, and that's what causes the emotions after. You see what you missed out in life with all the struggles, and you see just how much simpler and more organized life could have been. The stigma has ruined so many undiagnosed lives.

@@noperception5073 I think this is me. I was prescribed SSRI's for anxiety and they did NOTHING other than helping with coffee jitters. Changed psychiatrists and explained the struggle I had with organizing my thoughts, weird coping mechanisms I didn't realize were weird, memory issues, the root of my social anxiety.... she put me on Wellbutrin and it's early but it felt pretty immediate unlike anything I took prior. General anxiety and irritability is WAY down and I'm not mentally wandering off in conversation. I'm catching more details and slip-ups in work. I completely relate to the loop cycle. I was really good at slipping by but had so little self-confidence with my working memory issues. I was so great in college but it felt like I had to spend enormous amount of time to stay on task., and usually only got anything when I hyperfocused before the deadline. It really takes a toll on your health and anxiety to. operate that way for years.

I got diagnosed in my mid 40's. I always had the symptoms but was not informed at all about ADD ( grew up in a country where it is not taken seriously ). I was doing fine as a studient because I was gifted at maths and science, so daydreaming and studying at the last minute was good enough. Then I was able to focus at work for years because I was very interested in it and usually under pressure. But then in my 40's various things happened that made me seek treatment ( and medication ). As I was very experienced, my bosses no longer pressured me ( they expect me to be fully autonomous ) . Also, my work was no longer my main interest in life. So I was not able to focus on it anymore. Also, I came to realize that I still had not started on any of the personal projects I have been wanting to do for years. And I was not getting any younger. At that rate, I was going to die having accomplished nothing but earn paychecks and pay rent. That made me realize I had a serious problem that needed to be treated urgently.

So, is adult-onset ADHD real? I was diagnosed with Bipolar 2 and ADHD at 20 years old. I've experienced depression since childhood, but my attention was not an obstacle until college. I find that, unless the stars are aligned and my mood state is balanced, I have hard time focusing on only one task at a time, which makes it very challenging to follow through with things and meet deadlines. When I am down, I feel too slow to focus. When I am hypomanic, I am constantly chasing ideas. My imagination goes into overdrive, and I will often forget my ideas before I even have a chance to write them down. Could you please explain ADD symptoms within coexisting conditions like bipolar disorder? Do you have any tips or recommendations for managing these symptoms? Thank you so much for these videos! What you are doing is extremely important and valuable, and I cannot wait to watch your channel grow!
@DrTraceyMarks
@DrTraceyMarks 6 лет назад
Hi MeghanSusanne! Thanks for watching and appreciating what I do. It's people like you who are making my channel grow. 🙂 I feel a video coming out of this question... Teasing out ADHD and bipolar is complicated and too much for me to address here. So I'll do a video and give you a shout out. In the meantime, as for adult ADHD (probably another video), - adults can have ADHD, but it doesn't start for the first time as an adult. You must have some manifestation of it in childhood - even if you never got treatment or got by without needing medication. Sometimes people can "get by" during the school years, but as the demands of life increase - like grad school, or high intensity job - some young adults start on meds for the first time because they can no longer get by. But if a person has attention problems that are only connected to depression, anxiety, mania or some other illness, it wouldn't be called ADHD. ADHD is it's own entity. Hope this helps for now.
@MsMeghanSusanne
@MsMeghanSusanne 6 лет назад
It does, thank you! I've been worried about my ADHD medication and whether or not I actually need it. However, I have to be honest, I feel this way about all of my medication. Which leads me to another topic...I see a lot of stigma surrounding medication for mental health, and frequently from sources I'd least expect, like parents, friends, teachers, and other mentors who claim to be advocates for wellbeing. Unfortunately, I have a lot of shame associated with my medications, and am always thinking about the day I no longer have to take them...even though I know that is not exactly a healthy way of thinking. This has recently become a huge problem. I resent my meds, so I don't prioritize them. My prescription runs out, and I think, "This is an opportunity to see what it would be like without it," even when I KNOW this is not smart. I cancel appointments to pick up my meds because I am "too busy." I'll lay down and suddenly remember that I forgot to take them, but I think, "Oh well, too late now, you're already in bed," even though I know that is irrational. I know I am not the only one who struggles with this. Do you have any tips for keeping track of your meds, or for holding yourself accountable? I know I've asked a lot already haha, but I would love to hear your thoughts.
@DrTraceyMarks
@DrTraceyMarks 6 лет назад
Meghan you are SO not the only one who thinks like this. People are very uncomfortable with things they don't understand. Any maybe taking meds for depression makes sense, but ADHD is a tough sell to a lot of people. It's very hard for the unaffected person to understand how you can forget things or not hear something, lose stuff, etc. Then for the affected person, when you're surrounded by people who think there's nothing wrong with you except that you don't have your act together, you start to believe that OR you resent that you got stuck needing to take a medication to make your brain work correctly. I've heard the story many times. It makes me sad a lot also when I see people struggle thinking they're not smart because of this. I can go on... I would start with convincing yourself that no one has perfect health. The brain is an organ that can not function properly just like your pancreas or kidneys. You are fortunate to have a medication available that can help your problem. You may not need this for the rest of your life. At least for the ADD, a person can end up in a career that plays to their strengths such that they don't need medicine to perform their duties. The need to take meds is a threshold issue, there may be times when your life functioning falls under the threshold of needing meds.
@MsMeghanSusanne
@MsMeghanSusanne 6 лет назад
Wow, thank you. I haven't felt this seen in a very long time. That makes total sense to me, especially the part about resenting your situation. I didn't know I needed this...I should really go back to therapy. Thank you!

My ADHD was a superpower for me as a technician tasked with troubleshooting complex problems, but being a manager pays more. I would dump the meds and go back to fixing machines in a heartbeat, but I took the job because inflation ate my ability to exist at the technician pay rate. Now the market dictates I have a tedious job that requires me to abandon a billable, supposedly valuable skill set, for one that burns overhead and is much less accommodating to ADHD inattentive. I’m medicating for the first time in my 40s. It is definitely not optimal, but capitalism eats people. Claudia-Katrina 2024.

Is it possible for someone to be ADHD and have a cocktail of other traits that just balance out all disruptive/easy to spot ADHD symptoms? I had very good grades my whole academic life, but I also played sports a lot. However, I was so constantly distracted that I was known as Alzheimer guy. I have a good memory but at least once a week I forgot my things somewhere or forgot to even close my front door going out and other basic instantaneous stuff like that. I am not sure I have ADHD, but I've been taking Vyvanse for a year now and boy oh boy is it a boon for me. I can now orally formulate COMPLETE SENTENCES! Sounds like me and I was diagnosed with ADHD. I feel like people assume you don’t have it if you got good grades in school. I had good grades but didn’t really need to sit and focus at school. It was just easy to me. It wasn’t until college that I found studying to be harder, but I still did well because I enjoyed what I was learning. But my whole life I was disorganized, forgetting random things, spaced out, etc. The first word I remember forgetting was I was about 6 or 7 and was saying something about winning and couldn’t pull the word “trophy” from my brain. The picture of it was there in my head and for some reason I couldn’t pull the word out. A word I definitely knew. Now as an adult I’ve learned how to work around losing words in sentences by substituting them, but it’s so hard on me when I work in a career where I’m talking 3-4 hours a day.

I'm an adult and I've suspected for the past couple years that I might have had ADD since childhood and just never been diagnosed. I also have anxiety and depression so I'm not sure if it's just similar symptoms or if it's comorbid or if the potentially untreated ADD as a child led to anxiety and depression later in life. I've always struggled with organization, memory, procrastination, and some executive functioning which are things for all three disorders so it's hard to tell. My friend just introduced your channel to me today and I jumped right into the ADHD series! I am loving your videos - but I definitely did have to pause and rewind a few times as I zoned out doing chores and had to re-listen to what you said, haha! (I end up having to ask people to repeat themselves a lot). I was diagnosed at 19/20 when I was in the middle of undergrad (Im in grad school now, getting through at a snail’s pace) and it explained so much about my life. It shocked everyone because I was such a “well behaved” child who did pretty well in school overall- but teachers always described me as “spacey”, which is true- my head was always in the clouds and I was a huge daydreamer. Once the people close to me considered how I had always been, they realized how the diagnoses fit me so well. (My mom didn’t allow tv or video games so I read a lot, and my dad was a classical musician so I went to a lot of concerts where I had to sit still and be quiet- and I would slip back into my daydream world and imagine whole stories to the music.) My pediatrician said that the reason I wasn’t diagnosed as a child was because ADHD presents differently in girls, usually. I was wondering if you could do a video on that? Is that common? What social factors can change the way adhd manifests in different people? I definitely feel that a childhood with less tv and video games, and more reading and attending shows forced me to at least look like I was paying attention, haha. I would be super interested to hear your analysis, if you get the chance! Thank you for being an amazing resource :)

There is a statistical anomaly that suggest adult onset of ADD. Sorry the video is in French, but the reasonning is this in a cohort studdy: you have 5% of kids with ADD, 90% of ADD kids get better by the time they are adults. If there is no adult onset you should find about 0.5% of adults with ADD. But a random sampling in the adult population gives about 3%-4% of ADD. So either there is a mis-diagnostic amongst kids or adults, or you trust the study and there is a silent adult onset. A keyword seems to be "Dunedin Cohort" (where they found 3% of kids with ADD, then 2.8% of 38 years old with ADD).

My son was diagnosed with ADHD (…and he really has IT!). In an effort to be able to better understand and support him, I have come to believe that I have had many of the symptoms and consequences of ADHD…? I’m in my fifties. I work in restaurants. Partly of out of my passion for Food Service, but mostly because I have had to adapt to a career that has pressure. Restaurants provide a constant stream of immediate low level problems to solve. I have learned to organize myself better to achieve some level of success, but I really have a hard time focusing without pressure? My personal goals suffer, and I feel scattered. My self worth centers around work. Stress and constant pressure have their own downsides. I wonder if I am just identifying with my son’s condition, viewing my past struggles with education through the lenses of his disorder? Or, if I have had this disorder myself? If so, how has it impacted me? Life choices? Does confirmation do any good? What can I, or should I do about it?

There’s a lot of people realising they have it too once their child is diagnosed. I don’t know of evidence showing the hereditary link, but I’ve seen it mentioned a lot so I wouldn’t be surprised. Weird how sometimes medication is making it worse with some symptoms. But seems to follow some complex patterns of periods and interfere with other waves.

However, it seems that everyday I day, whilst on Sertraline I feel more hypomanic and energised with racing thoughts. I feel like I cannot come off this hypomania!! However the psychiatrist I met said that I do not have bipolar. But I’m confused why I feel hypomanic?! The intrusive thoughts have improved but now I have a new symptom… what are your thoughts!?

Hi. I suspect that my wife has ADD and she doesn't agree with with me. One of her really good arguments is, is that it's because that's just how a woman's brain works (going from one subject to another for example). She's referring to Mark Gungor's explanation on the differences between male and female brains. My question is: how can you discern between ADD symptoms and it being a healthy characteristic of your brain. So especially in the light of the women's brain as explained by Mark Gungor. Thnx

If they make you sleepy, you're having a reaction that some MDs would call atypical. However, i know that many people with ADHD can sleep on their stimulant med and I've even seen one friend actually get drowsy and doze off in front of me - midconversation. I still struggled in several ways with life skills, at the same time I learned to minimize my life and only take on what I can handle which is barely much and yet I can still struggle there. And I can’t adapt easily to new challenges. Idk what this video does to differentiate, This information is ambiguous and makes treatment difficult. Not everyone wants stimulants and adult treatment for ADHD isn’t widely implemented in therapy.

This was based on past history of impulsivity and major depressive episodes, and the fact that there is always chatter or a song in my head. I space out when talking to people and can’t read a book. @DrTraceyMarks

I think it's easier to mistake to think someone mistakenly has ADD when they really have bipolar d/o vs the other way around. As I mentioned in the video, mania, depression and anxiety can all cause attention problems. But if you have bipolar illness, it's also possible your mood disorder was a bigger deal and masked ADD. So yes, someone could have missed it early on (but usually shows up to some degree in childhood). All that to say, if someone missed a separate ADD dx, and now want to try you on stimulants, I'm not sure why your bipolar meds would be tapered off - unless that's a misdiagnosis. Stimulants are not going to keep your depression and mania away.

Also the experts say that your untreated Adhd is what had you as very high risk for substance abuse. Wishing you well. Life has been very hard. I've tried to self medicate with energy drinks and funnily enough I get less anxious when I do and I feel some what relaxed. I'm not downing a whole can but only take a few sips when I need to. I've not burnt out yet and have done this for about 3 weeks now so it must be ADHD. I've also been told by two ADHD specialists so am not doing it off a hunch even though I suspected as much. If anyone else thinks they have ADHD, do go see a doctor. Try to do the things that they ask you to do even if you know it doesn't work. It's important that there's a paper trail from a practicing doctor that says for sure hat it doesn't work. Self diagnosis is hard and your brain will try to trick you, I know this from personal experience. Everyone is different and ADHD effects everyone differently. I remember that in college the only indicator i had was that i felt like my adhd "flared up" unusually. and im not talking about acts out here or there, im talking conistently "flares up". in hindsight this feeling or sense was one or both of the issues i was dealing with around that time. Hyperthyroid (graves) and then following a good long year like that and just being run down and shot physiologically and emotionally and mentally , i had depression. both of these felt like adhd "flared up" but neither of them were. so in case you ever feel this sort of sense liek your just consistently not regulating as well or it feels like what you think is your adhd is just a bit worse, its not your adhd, it something else. dont go 2-3 years without getting the propper physical and mental help you need. I know kids with adhd who suffer depression in college struggle much more than just those with adhd who do struggle more than expected but not as badly. there is also a connection between adhd and autoimmune conditions and or endocrine disorders like thyroid conditions. something about how it affects how the brain develops. its one of the causal pathways for it. there are others but its interesting.

And now.. november.. the month of my usual blues.. i normally like this a lot, because it contrasts well with the spring feelings.. Anyhow. This environmental awareness went down from a about 25m to just a couple steps. It's hard to explain.. it feels like forgetting, but it isn't exactly the same. It's more like orientation problems with sensory stuff outside of the sphere i have. Well.. usually this sphere should be about 120m but it is so weird.. i can go from A to B and constantly forget where i am and what i wanted to do.. luckily i'm young enough to stitch it fast enough together, but i see and feel it. It is real to me and just looks a bit more clumsy and stupid as normally on the outside.. i say this is depression because it's not normal to me but i can't really tell why, because i already have less than 4 hours in my adhd time window as well.. maybe it is sleep related too, i mean i sleep very unsatisfied and i'm awakening 3 times each night due to noises (even with my headphones).. Oh and i have a huge appatite for fish the last couple days. I just write that, because it makes me happy. I like fish. Salmon with herb quark and potatos, yummy. Nja, whatever. It was more than I was capable of and I was sent spiraling into a depression, part of which was because when I went to actually begin my online courses, all the challenges I faced in school came rushing back at me. It had been 12 years. I felt more than ready to take it on, but I couldn't sit down and focus. My distractability was though the roof. 3 months later, I'm still currently navigating the healthcare system, but managed to get an official diagnosis of ADHD at 30 years of age. All this time...if I had known, if someone had spotted it, I could have avoided decades of inner turmoil and torment. It's a relief to know now what I've been struggling with and I'm so very grateful to you, Dr. Marks, for your wonderfully informative channel. Helping us build the knowledge and skills to adapt to our symptoms and move beyond our circumstances is a gift worth giving that will save lives. You give people strength. I hope you get all of the kindness and warmth back from the world you serve and more. Thank you.

Some of us faced harsh consequences as children if we complained about anything so if we fell behind in class because we couldn't concentrate we had to try to catch up on schoolwork in secret, lost social contact, burnt out a couple of times, were ridiculed and rejected by our parents for being "useless" and "an embarrassment to me / us" during the burnouts and only many years later realised that it was ok to ask for help. It can take a long time to accept that it's not because we're bad people and to break the habit of rejecting any and all help or any gifts for fear of punishment.

Dr. Tracey Marks Does strattera also maje anxiety worse for people with anxiety disorders?
@watcherwlc53
@watcherwlc53 5 лет назад
@@eduardosanchez3858 I think less so than a stimulant would. Some patients request non stimulants to avoid aggravating their anxiety. Hopefully the Dr will give some more specific feedback.

Is there any thing called ADD treatment resistent? I have been diagnosed with different disorders, depression or bipolar and ADD, several doctors cant differentiate my cognitive decline and we tried all types of AD's from all classes in addition to amphetamines, atomoxetine, clonidine and wellbutrin with zero results . Any hints?

Atomoxetine fucked me up lol. Same thing with Bupropion. Both made me irritable, feeling as if I were bipolar, and manic once a week, at least. Tapered off but the insomnia isn’t going away. Will try Prozac now for a little bit and see if it’s better

My issue is I definitely have depression, but I'm unsure if I also have ADHD or if my depression causes similar problems as ADHD.

I have anxiety and can’t use stimulants, gotta use Strattera. Also, hypothyroidism worsened my symptoms a while back, that was hoot

I'm 43 & just been diagnosed with ADD & autism. I've started Intuniv because stimulants might worsen my severe anxiety. I've been watching your vids & this must be an early one for your channel. You don't seem at ease or as confident like in your recent ones. You trip over words & seem a little robotic (no offence! I love you!). I reckon you should redo your ADD series

Hi, my dad has ADHD and I show most the symptoms, but I also have many symptoms of depression. I have noticed overlap and such. Is it possible to have both? Can you make a video helping decide which one (or if you have both)?
@Luzac-1
@Luzac-1 4 года назад
Hey, it is possible to have both it's called Comorbidity . ADHD is highly genetic so there is a big chance that you have it. I would say that: 1- ADHD can cause depression-like sympthoms . 2- Living with ADHD can cause depression. 3- Someone can have both disorders with depression being completly unrelated to the ADHD.

If you can focus on the talking points with the jingle playing in the background you probably don't have ADHD...

So there's really no chance people can have been able to cope all the way into their 30's? I was diagnosed in my late 20's and at that point I had been very successful; it really was only after my career was getting going that I realized my coping mechanism of just not sleeping to get through everything wasn't working anymore and I always worry if maybe I don't have adhd and am just lazy.

I love quite a few of yourvodeo vids. This music, however, is just not a good idea for this particular on this particular thing. Completely distracting.

So if you don't know how you were before 12 years old , also if you are diagnosed with it , you can not be sure about having or not ad(h)d? Thanks
