That is what I love about them. Every song was its own unique masterpiece. You could have a lot of different sounds on one album yet they meshed so well together.
@@hankb7725 Idk, Hank...your comment is very "fit'ish" Like, it doesn't make sense reading it in a nice way, only in a smartass kinda way. So..have a goddamn fit over it😆
I'm 61yrs old, and a huge fan! I'll never forget the 1st time I heard them. It was a Saturday evening, and I had to wait until Monday to go get their album bc the stores were all closed. AND... Billy looks great no matter his age! He sure writes some good music too💯 🫡
😂😂😂 I know right? " as soon as I get outta work Monday I'm going down to Strawberry's and gettin that tape!" I feel like things were better then because you had to wait and you were always looking forward to something. Nowadays you just press a button and get everything instantly.
im 59..man the 1st half of the 90s is a 1/4 of my music. i used to have to wait for BMG or Columbia House to give me those free samples they used to give away for a penny . sometimes 14 days . torture .. rode that gravy train for 20yrs.. which may be why im still getting collection notices for William C. Corgan..Esq.J.D Apt 3D
♥️ Billy ♥️ Im a music addict 😁 married a musician ♥️ I've been burned out on all the music I've been listening to lately then yesterday while walking the pups I heard the haunting melodies of Infinite Sadness coming from my neighbors house and remembered, Billy ♥️ Instantly came home and listened to Gish all day! Billy and his glorious guitar 🎸 So grateful to him, his incredible talent and ability to initiate time traveling with the push of the "play" button! love you forever Billy ♥️
My favorite band from 14 years old to now 44 years old!!!! Well one of my favorites anyways. The first band that I was obsessed with lol !!! As a teen in the 90s smashing pumpkins 🎃 were my best friends. I saw them 3 times in concert with original members. ❤ I will always love this band!!!!
I’m 46 (today, actually!) and I remember loving Gish and Siamese Dream, but when my girlfriend at the time bought me MCatIS for my birthday (28 years ago today! Man I’m getting old…) I was hooked. I still jam to “Here is No Why”, “Muzzle”, “Bullet…”, “1979”, and a few others quite often to this day. The only other bands from the ‘90’s I listen to with similar frequency are STP and AIC. Those days were golden. Keep your head up, my friend in time. Peace!
@@gwen_burkedepends on who you’re going to see and the venue. But typically, it is pretty loud, yes. Make sure you go with people you trust and stay together. There are a lot of bad people out there. If you take money for concessions/merchandise, etc, keep it in a safe place not easily accessible to others. Some people use the crowd and jostling around to be pickpockets and sneak thieves. Were I you, I would leave jewelry and debit/credit cards at home. If it’s an outdoor concert, take a blanket if the weather is still cool. Other than those things, I think that’s pretty much it. Oh! One more thing. Never accept a drink from someone that is already opened and protect your drink/food from others putting something in it. Best to stick with plastic bottles with lids. Be safe, young’un!
Love every era of music of theirs, but this LOOK of Billy's, I fell in love with him in this era. Gish era, Siamese Dream era. 😍 Gorgeous, fulfilling, unique, heavenly music!
These are true words spoken. Billy Corgan has more than enough proven himself, and he’s one of the only artist I’ve ever known to make a free album without even making any money for it for his fans he’s just all in all great person and excellent musician, and very talented.
@@bryanh2898 - that’s a rather large umbrella… what type of alternative rock? grunge, pop rock, heavy metal, goth rock, prog rock, dream pop, psychedelic rock, folk rock, electronic rock, new wave, industrial, shoegaze? …or something else?
Billy is a great song writer, and together with James's awesome guitar riffs Jimmy's unique drumming skills and some good bass the Pumpkins have created some of the most amazing rock music of the 90's.
Hahahaha. You completely IGNORE D’arcy’s influence. D’arcy was Billy’s sounding board and confidant from 1988 onwards. Her Good Taste as an editor for Billy’s lyrics was really important, as was her female perspective. Her Presence SEPARATED The Pumpkins from the other ROCK BANDS of that moment (1990-1991) Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Chili Peppers, Pavement, who were 100% MALE. D’arcy definitely HELPED make The Pumpkins stand out among their peers.
I just found my Mellon Collie CD and I discovered that I had saved my original cassete liner in the case! That tape was the first album I bought on my own for myself. I'm Zero, by the way, and have been ZeroOskul, online, since 1996. Wonder how that happened...--? Probably a reflection in some dirty mirror. Who knows?
Even from the recordings they had in 89 to the 10 that wound up on Gish... They sounded like a totally different band. kinda like a new wave/gothy kinda pop rock outfit does a 180° and plays this almost Hendrix infused psychedelic, almost more like classic rock... Every album is practically a different genre. It's so weird to me that people try to pigeon hole them to alternative/grunge rock, but i guess it makes sense in a narrow minded/uneducated kinda way since that's the stuff they were doing when they sold the most albums (siamese dream and a significant amount of mellon collie) So i really don't care or listen to what any of the other fans say or want, I'm just supremely thrilled my favorite band since HS is still together and making new music, that its always something new, And im SO excited about what's next. I heard on the most recent podcast the new album (after ATUM) is a Guitar record. Now, that shouldn't necessarily mean that's heavy, but I'm sure that's what most people are going to think. Some of my favorite songs are the slow saddoes and lullaby so I'm psyched. He specifically said he was giving the keyboard and synthesizer sound a break, and with Adore, theFutureEmbrace, Cyr and now ATUM under his belt and three competent guitarist in the band, I feel like now is the best time for it!!
Saw them last year and he was amazing as always. I feel very fortunate I got to go, as before that I had never seen them. A lot of my favorite artists started out in the 90s so it's sad that the ones that are left are going to die too soon probably
Billy was the best & most complete guitarist/ songwriter of the 90's & of his generation. what he did on the guitar & the assortment of songs he created no other guitarist matched it
I saw them on their Gish tour at Saint Andrews Hall in Detroit because a friend had an extra ticket and cajoled me into going to see this band that I thought had a stupid name. but because I love my buddy John like a brother I went ahead. Halfway through the first song I was saying to myself “Smashing Pumpkins is the coolest name I’ve ever heard in my life!“. True story🙏🏽
Ironic right? One of the most iconic and influential "alternative" bands ever but also one of the most genre-less bands ever. Maybe, 'not defined or restricted by their genre' is a better way to put it but you know what I mean...
Best Rock band that ever existed on Earth !!! Zwan was just as good or even better too, though... The last album is Awesome and I am waiting for the next Chapters (Volumes) to "No Past. No Future. No Sun..." and also to "Knights of Malta" !!! My many thanks to Billy and Jimmy for making me feel so good over the decades... And years to come !!! You are the best... and always will be in my heart.
Atum is terrible. Over produced, vibrato singing with no consonants, terrible synth choices, and er Hooray! Beguiled is a troll of a riff. Pumpkins will always be my favourite band but since Zeitgeist... Song for a Son, Archer, half of Oceania.
I would so love a crack at that 3rd guitarist position. It's my dream job really. I see a lot of cool audition videos. But I make the case for myself because I have rarely met other guitarists with both my level of chops and willingness to think like an audio engineer and do it this well amongst a "Swiss Army like" assortment of useful skills. I learn parts faster than most people (once I have solo'd tracks). Additionally, I have a plow horse mentality and strong work ethic and I can match you in stamina for rehearsals. I also don't take things too personally and I'm good for laughs. I'm a good sounding board without being a sycophant. And although I am no slouch as a solo musician and instrumentalist, I am fully willing to put the Smashing Pumpkins first. Finally, I'm not a weekend warrior. As a 46-year-old parent, I have realistic expectations about the amount of work involved to prepare for a summer European tour, both musically and personally. So, from a random stray in Madison, Wisconsin hoping for an audition... Cheers!
people always say hair isnt important. Dude this guy looks like a complete different person from what i remember in the 90s when he was bald. Its insane how much different he looks, it insane
Saw the Pumpkins in 1994,Roseland Ballroom NYC, Billy said"we are going to rock you like no one else" he wasn't kidding, I couldn't hear for two weeks!!!😮
This probably came off super cliche and pretentious, but in the era where everything was called "Grunge" they were the band that went on to do a double album with: Classical Grunge Folk Shoegaze Grunge etc. They really were different as pretentious as Billy comes off. He really is a student of music and the most impressive songwriter of the 90s IMO.
I saw these guys when they were just playing in a club of 300. They were phenomenal. They did have their sound it was psychedelic rock with a lot of other different feels and the drummer Jimmy Chamberlain was like no other
"Stay cool..and be somebody's fool this year". Love love LOVE Billy! Die hard SP fan here. I use to say "I'm gonna marry him one day..only he dont know about it! 😮😅
No one can deny he/they have a unique and fantastic sound. People just don’t like Billy because he thinks he is the only person that can compose music in a unique fashion that is pleasing to the masses.
@@jaircosta4511 It's kinda splitting hairs but it's all alternative music as a general umbrella to me... the musical and artistic influences, the compositions/arrangements, the attitude, the lyrics make the differences but there is some overlap. It's just trying to distance themselves from an overused trend buzzword... even so called grunge bands don't like the label or consider themselves that.
@@MedalionDS9 I keep getting vibes whenever I listen to a lot of their stuff, especially the older stuff, that feels like Pink Floyd must have given them inspiration at least. A little bit Beatles influence as well here and there too. But I would definitely not categorize them as the same. SP is too unique. They are a truly progressive, alternative rock band with legit advanced lyrical and audio quality. They stand out from the crowd at the end of the day, but always help me feel grounded, even though they transport me to a parallel universe every time 🖤
One of my favorite bands, and one of my favorite artists. I can't think of another band that sounds anything like them. They are practically their own genre.
He is/was correct, just brilliant , deep and fun . Billy brought compassion to the envelopes in sound. Billy took distortion/fuzz up a few notches in its evolution.
Bands who don't nail down a particular style are very hard to market and most flounder. Danny Gatton is a prime example of this. He was the greatest guitarist I've ever seen, and he didn't have great commercial success in spite of being signed to a major label because his style was all over the place.
Smashing Pumpkins forever 🧡 they led the way with true alternative rock. So many other bands were just imitations and mash-ups.. copying other styles and sounds.
The music, the ego, the voice and the demeanor hasnt changed one bit. Just the amount of hair on his head and the clothing style has changed as he has slowly evolved into Voldemort over the years.
I remember him at State Street studios. He said I was the future Alex skolnik. I had no idea he played metal guitar similar to what I was doing. Billy was alright. He was confident...
Around 93-94 i heard Syamese Dream at max level in my car.. I wore an elegant dark suit to disguise my addiction.. their sounds even more than that of Marlene Kuntz helped me to remain alive by giving me the courage to go back to the hunt every new f-day; only afterwards I relaxed myself a bit with Jane's Addiction
Billy has quite the ego, but it's not fully undeserved. He's smart, talented, and manages to still be relevant while living a clean, organized, and sober life. Many musicians can't say all of that.
