If a print, no buttonholes. I agree with you that a solid has to have all the same. Your top is sew pretty.

Hi Karina - love the Lincoln top. I was born in Lincoln UK and have Mr Lincoln roses in my garden so this top was a “must” for me. Loved your version - not sure yet about the buttonholes. I will just see how the mood takes me when I make my first one! Thanks again for another great garment.

I love your choice of fabric. The top looks great on you. If buttonholes are not functional, I would leave the off as well. When I make the Lincoln, I probably won’t make the buttonholes either except at the bottom.

Hi Karina! You sold me on the Lincoln top pattern and giving it a try. Looking forward to it. This tutorial was wonderful and very clear. I love that you show some of the trickier spots and how you handle them. I will do the buttonholes, in this case. I’m like you on buttonholes and whether I feel like doing them. And no judgement here on you doing the buttonholes or not. It’s about being comfortable and happy😀💝

Thinking a little more… If I was sewing a solid color, I’d either sew all the buttonholes, or none. That’s because it would be more visible. Since this print disguises this, the sole buttonhole at the bottom does not really make a visual difference 😀😀
@janedrolet2807
@janedrolet2807 2 года назад
I agree, on a solid fabric the stitching would show and I would do all the buttonholes. On the print however, I would go the same route as you did, and only put them on the buttons I actually wanted to unbutton. I was also thinking in a nice tee-shirting, snaps might be cute. I love the version you made. I was also thinking of a curved hem. I have a T-shirt with a forward slanting “side” seam that has a curved hem. The result is a very flattering body line,.

Hi Karina ... I love your reviews! This is just like a top I have and love , so I will definitely be giving it a go. I haven't read all 84 comments, but I have an idea about your under arm comment where you want to catch down the side extentsions. Could you maybe just make the whole side seam the same size and not interface the last inch or so. That way you can just press it open and it would be enclosed in the armhole binding. I hope that doesn't sound too confusing - maybe someone else has suggested that too LOL x

Thank you Karina for sharing your Lincoln. When I saw this pattern released, I immediately came to your channel to see what you did! And yours is beautiful! We are coming into spring here in the Northwest US and so sleeveless is definitely on my mind for a quick make, less fabric and more style. Buttons and buttonholes: For me, it would be a matter of having the right amount of matching/size buttons to do it. I love the style and I think if I didn't have the right buttons, I would still make it. But the buttons do dress it up a little more. I think, like you, I would add 1 button hole at the bottom just for an option. I like having options! Thanks again for sharing your work. Because of this, I have, and always will use your affiliate link 🥰

I agree about the buttonholes... with the modern machines buttonholes should be a none issue... if I'm not going to un-button n the holes are not a feature (example in different color) why chance something getting fluffed up... same as a zipper... if you pull it on why put the zipper in ??? This top buttons n angled shaping are the stars... love your fabric... black n white are timeless... I just now finished another pattern but in black n white too... great video Thank you... blessings

Hi Karina, thank you for sharing your video. I love sewing button holes, easy peesy on step 😊 I finished my top sewing along with you and also got to try out my new coverstitch machine. Only thing I did wrong was under the arm, I added a sleeve, and now there is pleat after I overlapped the button stand, I think it's hot yo do with the seem allowance in that area. I'll definately improve on this step on the next one that I'll be sewing.

You managed to get a rather dressy look with fabric choice. I love it! As ever, you are the best at fitting on the entire internet. I’m always so impressed. Regarding buttonholes, I have no trouble putting them in but like you, I’m practical. If I make this pattern, I won’t do buttonholes. Without them, the garment has slightly better structure.
@karlab9557
@karlab9557 2 года назад
I think you are absolutely right about the buttonholes. With your fabric, and knowing how you will wear the top, doing all of the buttonholes is not practical. I also agree that doing all or none for a plain fabric would be best practice. Lovely top!

I would only sew buttonholes when they are needed, not just because the garment has buttons or the pattern instructs sewing buttonholes. Having the option of 1 or 2 buttonholes to open that lower area is worth doing. Thank you for another informative instructional video. So happy to see your "studio" room is working out for you.

That top came out lovely. I like that wrap around effect on you. I’m the same as you. If the garment needs button holes, i do them. Its not as if they’re hard with an automatic buttonhole foot. Occasionally i do buttonholes with a contrast thread to achieve a particular look. Sometimes i sew the buttonholes but don’t slice them open, just sew the buttons through all layers, if i want the look of having them but don’t need to open the placket. Then other times they aren’t the slightest bit necessary so i omit them. Each case is individually assessed ☺️

My machine makes sewing button holes almost as easy as sewing a straight seam, so I'll make them whenever they're going to makes the garment work best for me. As you said, in this case the busy print makes them "extra," but I agree that in a solid, I would make all the button holes regardless of whether I intended to ever use them. The top looks good in your lightweight ponte and it looks great on you!

thanks for showing this, I too might have passed as it is not my typical style. As for buttonholes, If any of the them are to be functional, I would Stitch All of them, but only CUT the ones that need to be functional. I would stitch the buttons through all layers and the nonfunctional buttonhole. I just like the visual. if All buttons are nonfunctional, I just sew the buttons on.

Very flattering top! I really like how your top turned out. I would opt out of most of the buttonholes (other than just at the bottom, to allow the top to open there for greater mobility). Buttonholes take quite a bit more time, since you also have the buttons to sew on. If they are not needed for a "functional purpose," like you, I would vote for the simpler process of sewing the buttons on through the placket (especially with a print, as you mention).

I have some athletic fabric picked out to try this but as usual I was thinking of one that might be problematic. Do you think this one would work with a sweater knit? I think a sweater knit is ok as long as it’s got spandex or Lycra in the blend. If it’s only mechanical stretch, it’ll deform easily.

If I don’t need to have to do up and undo buttons I will always skip button holes why waste time and effort if you don’t need them also you cannot usually see the button holes. My sewing machine is a devil with button holes the buttonhole attachment is funny to use there is a lever at the back which it touched when you reach the button on the back but to repeat the stitches to make the hole sturdier you have to quickly re-engage that lever so it repeats the buttonhole. So that is why I hate buttonholes which half the time the machine ruins. Loved the top I think it suits you, When you say it’s going to get cold exactly what temperatures do you get down to?
@teresatierney4817

Nice. Thank you. Do you notice the button near the arm pit as you wear it? …. With the benefit of your experience, I might skip the button holes. Otherwise I would make them in case they were needed for access. They are easy to do, but I look for ways to speed projects.

I agree completely about the button holes. Why make them if it isn't necessary? I have had tops that did have all of the button holes made and usable, but I haven't used them to get the top on or off, so to me, it's a waste of time and effort. Really like the top on you. I liked the pattern on the fabric too. Very slimming on you. I'm surprised to see a ponte knit that was thin enough to make a top like this. Ours is really thick and full of body so I don't think that would work for this pattern for me. I think it would come out looking like a maternity top using the thick ponte. Congrats and thanks for sharing.

Beautiful top. You always do such wonderful tutorials. Takes the anxiety out of a new project. Does the pattern have lengthen and shorten lines? As I'm tall I usually have lengthen.

Yes it does :)

Hi Karina, I'm with you on the button holes! Would do exactly as you did. Can you tell me where you sourced your cotton lycra binding? Is it a tape or is it a single fold binding?

Absolutely Stunning Karina ... Thankyou muchly for your tutorial :)I'm wondering if it would change the look if you used a V neck option for the top? Cheers from Australia

Hello Karina, thanks for the video. I've just started to construct the Lincoln Top and I learned a lot from your guidance. I have a question, I hope you have time to answer it: What size buttons did you use?
@LiftingPinsandNeedles

these are 3/4" :)

Love your review!! I do have one question, can you blend sizes with this pattern? I have small shoulders so bending a size or two to the hip is always needed. Thanks in advance for any insight you can lend.

No you can’t blend. In your case, I’d choose by upper bust and use 1-2 buttons open.

I love the slanted placket feature. Would an interlock knit fabric work for this, as long as it has the recommended stretch?
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 2 года назад
Yes it would :) make sure there is spandex in the mix so it doesn’t grow abs stretch out.

Thank you. I have purchased the pattern through your link and I'm looking forward to making it. Your video will be really helpful when I start it.

You’ll always find it in the description box of each video. This is the link www.lovenotions.com/product/lincoln-top?affiliates=366 thank you so much 😀 If you look at the title of the video… towards the right hand side, you’ll see a little symbol like abs arrow… that’s where you tap and all the description will show up.

Can I do this without a serger?

You can zig zag with a sewing machine

I don't mind doing buttonholes but if they are only decorative and non-functional I will opt not to do them.

I think I would make all the buttonholes but make the bottom 3 functional. It would bother me if it didn’t match.
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 2 года назад
I agree and I’d do that if my fabric was a solid. This print petty match hides it all 😀

Why not red buttons.

Because it would limit the color of the bottoms I can wear with this top. I’d love to keep my options open to all color skirts and pants.
