There’s something i never noticed before. At the beginning of this scene, when Neiman is playing and Fletcher is calling him Buddy Rich, Tanner has this worried look on his face as if he’s scared that Neiman will replace him, which eventually happens. But as the scene goes on and Fletcher keeps telling Neiman that he’s not quite following his tempo, Tanner’s face starts calming down, because he knows that Fletcher’s gonna yell at Neiman, to the point where it looks like he wants to smile

@@EricGraham94 But it's just a story, a highly dramatized version of real life. In reality, of course, types like Fletcher fail far more than they succeed, and the trope of the perfectionist high art instructor died out a long time ago. Negative reinforcement kills people's drive and passion, and while there might be a (completely unprovable) claim that abusive methods can bring out the "best" in an individual artist, the modern pedagogical approach for teaching music or art is closer to the exact opposite of this style, and the reason is not because we magically care more for the musicians or artists, it's because abusing those people in the past meant that a lot of them turned away from their talents, and therefore the teachers have less to show for it.

The scariest thing about Fletcher is the way he turns on a dime. When they first start playing, it sounds like he's encouraging Andrew, saying 'Let's hear some fills', implying that he wants to hear Andrew play more, then he makes a kind of weird, but light-hearted and a little encouraging comment comparing him to Buddy Rich. Then he loses his shit and it completely recontextualises everything he said before Andrew fucked up. It's fucking terrifying.

If you listen to the rhythms carefully, every rush/drag call that Fletcher makes in the first half of the scene is correct. He only throws the chair after Andrew gets the tempo right to test his tempo when under stress. Obviously, he flinched and that's where Fletcher's gaslighting begins for this clip. All the abuse after the chair is to reinforce a false idea that Andrew isn't good enough for the band, when he's obviously a gifted learner.

Bro, this whole scene is a ridiculous exaggerated idea of what it is to play under a jazz professor. My professors all saw us as musicians who were doing the best that they could, and treated us the exact same way. Encouragement and not cussing and scowling at us when we got it wrong. They would only give us tips as to how we could play and improv more efficiently. I hate the way that this movie makes everyone else view jazz musicians and the schools that they went to. But having said that, this is cinematically a very bad ass movie. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
