I love that moment because it shows the importance of physical acting, but also because it means Mrs Lovett had a hard time killing him, so she did love him at least that much
In the Danish premiere, Grethe Mogensen played the same, but during rehearsals, before she toned it down, the thought was obvious, when she had her back against him. :-)
I do love Patti’s acting, you can tell Mrs Lovett genuinely cares about toby but she also cares a bit more about herself than him idk it’s hard to explain
Well, the original part of Tobias was written to be a fully grown man with a mental disability that gave him the mind and mannerisms of a child. Tim Burton decided to have the part be portrayed as a little kid because (and this is just a guess) it would provide more sympathy for the character. While I enjoy both versions and portrayals of the character, I think that an adult Tobias makes for a more realistic and true to Sondheim's original idea production.
actually the original story Tobias is a child around 12-15 (which makes sense considering the work kids of that time in london would be doing) but Sondheim thought it would make it even darker to make it an adult with a disability while Tim Burton stayed true to the original story
I did not think Neil could hit those high notes with such awsomeness. I was proven wrong, and my punishment was hitting the replay button OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER.
3:02 she could strangle him right at that moment, but she chooses not to! Even with all the risk that his knowledge could bring! It’s so so subtle yet so so powerful!
Seems like some don't know that Mrs. Lovett here is Patti Lupone (who won the Tony for Evita the year after Angela Lansbury won her (4th) Tony for Mrs. Lovett). They are both multiple award winners and amazing performers. NPH is a multi-talented wonder himself.
@@bobblefishI just assumed that she's not being pointed out because this is primarily a Toby song. Though, I would like to point out that Patti's part in the song really sells how creepy and sinister Mrs Lovett has become.
wayne wright WHAT ? DUBYA TEE EFF ???????????? " It's Marina Sirtis " my Lord in Heaven above.....google PATTI LUPONE, Wayne. Educate yourself. ( .....or were you making a so-sly joke that I missed it ? I hope...)
ratedpink She is also the voice of Yellow Diamond in Steven Universe; the intimidating leader of the gems in the galaxy. And sings the song 'Whats the point of feeling blue' by Rebecca Sugar.
I love them together in this song. I also like how the song provides a false sense of security because his character can sense that he knows what’s going on, and her character does everything she can to distract him from the truth.
I like how Ms. Lovette is portrayed by Patti here and in the film by Helena. If anyone else was even hinting that they might know what’s going on Ms. Lovette would probably immediately try to take care of them or trick them into getting into Sweeney’s clutches. But she keeps trying to persuade him to not think about it and drop it even though it’s obvious he’s catching on and he won’t forget the clues he’s noticed. I feel like she knows that if it comes down to him or Sweeney she knows she’ll probably choose Sweeeny and she’s basically fighting herself here to avoid that situation at all costs because she really cares about and has grown fond of Tobias as her child. This song really shows her that he cares about and treasures her like she wants from Sweeney. Tobias is the love she desires and yet she’s so messed up that she probably realizes the irony that she’ll probably kill that love for a dream love that we know will never become reality. That serious stare she gives when he starts saying nothings gonna harm you after recognizing Spinelli’s purse is one of pure fear of her realizing the situation and how she’ll destroy her only form of real love if she can’t get him to forget about the things he’s noticed but it’s also a realization that she knows that won’t happen and she’ll be forced to make that choice. Only problem is that she knows who she’ll choose and it scares her. She knows she’s one of the demons he’s talking about. She knows she evil and heartless yet I feel that somewhere in there she really does care about Toby. She knows that and it scares her. How terrifying is that!? A serial killer who is getting scared! What sins will they commit when they feel that fear? That look she gives him while he lays in her lap as the lights go off is really chilling to me.
I think so. But also bring another song preferably also in the higher region with real quick lyrics to show them you know how to do the breathing, cause I think Jack has a lot of quick lines and then places where you have to hold the note. Good luck friend ! : D
After watching this many times, I just realized how macabre and ironic the red scarf is. When Tobias puts it on, it looks like his throat has been slashed and it's bleeding.
Not While I’m Around, this is my favorite song by the incomparable maestro Mr Stephen Soundheim. His talent and works will live on even though we have lost him. His works are a legacy to Stephen a true genius , his talent was from another world , that only very few have, we were so lucky that he put so much beauty in this difficult, troubling world of ours but with his music we will always be reminded of the magnificent music he wrote a litany of unbelievably beautiful music that shall live on and on and on for years to come. RIP my prince , sleep well and thank you for such beauty.
I had no idea that these people ever performed this show. Bravo!! I absolutely love the music from this show. It's so beautiful and the lyrics are absolute genius.
I saw this sooo many times but i still can't believe this is actually real. It's too perfect. It's just too freaking perfect. I love you Neil. And I love everything you do. THIS MAN SHOULD GET AN AWARD FOR LIVING.
This is amazingly sweet. Patti does such a brilliant Lovett, and this number is where it really shows. She had to choose which man she loves more, and she chooses Sweeney. Chilling!
you dont have to be gay or straight to have a crush. aint nothing wrong about it so there's really no need to put "if only i were gay". it just sounds dumb as hell to be honest
iggyfan11 You say that, but the fact is, I don't have a crush on him. Sure, I think he's the coolest person in the world. But that doesn't mean I want to sleep with him/be in a relationship with him, like I would if I were gay. So, as far as my own definition goes, I can't have a crush on him.
SupermewX300 .....cause having a crush totally means the same thing as wanting to fuck the guy. jfc...excuse me while i go bash my head against a wall for a few hours so i can clear it of all the stupidity that i just read. let me make this clear to you crush =/= wanting to be in a relationship or wanting to fuck
SupermewX300 you realize the difference between *like* and *wanting to be in a relationship and want to fuck* right....? cause fancying and a crush is basically liking them a whole fuckin lot....not wanting to bang them or be in a relationship with them. I have crushes on a few male actors and im a lesbian. jfc dude...
I truly wish I could guarantee the sentiments of this lovely song as the world goes insane trying to figure this COVID19 out. "Nothin' can harm you, not while I'm around."
Nothing's gonna harm you Not while I'm around Nothing's gonna harm you No sir, not while I'm around Demons are prowling everywhere nowadays I'll send them howling, I don't care, I've got ways No one's gonna hurt you No one's gonna dare Others can desert you Not to worry, whistle I'll be there Demons'll charm you with a smile for a while But in time Nothing can harm you, not while I'm around
It's true. Sweeney Todd is 100% my favorite musical. I'm not a fan of the movie version, but mainly because they eliminated the Ballad of Sweeney Todd.
It's incredible how music leads both sweet protecting and inner lying intentions of "nothing's gonna harm you, not while I'm around" Incredible musical.
I just love Neil Patrick Harris. I am more impressed every time I see him. Great actor, singer, dancer, host. Charming, well-spoken and talented. Go Neil! :)
I'm just crying. NPH just breaks my heart. Everything he does is so beautiful. Such a beautiful person...Inside and out. And I can't have him. Heartbreaking.
