Log Talk with Dave is a series of short tutorials, discussions and demonstrations about log homes and log home building. Dave is the founder of and instructor at the BC School of Log Building in Golden BC, Canada. In this Log Talk, Dave takes a look at the Notch Drop in Dovetail log construction; what it is, and how he determines it for different log widths. After a brief discussion, Dave skillfully cuts the connector, brushes it, and checks for a tight fit on the receiver. For a more in depth study of dovetail log construction, we offer a complete online dovetail log building program available on our website at:

Fantastic! You have to do a video on proper chainsaw sharpening for log building!

Perfect! I'm going to raise up my canvas tent up 4 feet using a base done like this. Can't wait! Will have to figure out the entry is all as it will be raised up by 4 feet. Love this stuff! We have an endless supply of downed cedar to work with.

So Dave... this was very interesting for me... I photograph birds and old buildings. I found a couple fabulous old structures in rural south west Alberta... Very old structures.... I'm thinking late 1800's or older...... My question is: were the notches also designed to repel rain and allow the rain to drip off the structure instead of accumulating in notches and hence to eventually rot...? I see from your video that there's a gentle slope in the notches. Probably a silly question.

Exactly, water rolls away from the building…think like a raindrop!

Hello Dave, love your video series. Very informative and enjoyable to watch so keep them coming. :) When you final assemble the dovetail cabin, do you use long screws in the dovetail notch corners to secure the logs or do you just rely on the weight of the logs (gravity) on top of the notch to hold the building together?

Thanks for your support. Yes, we use timber screws in the corners and wooden pegs throughout the length of the logs.

What’s the best joint mid-wall? If I need to run 3 ten foot logs to create a wall how to join them?
