Incredible stuff as always! Thank you for all the work you do with this stuff. It really helps us make informed decisions and also helps studios as well. I've mentioned before, but I work as a concept artist in AAA games and have been on the look out for a new personal tablet. I have personally tried the Xencelabs 24, 17 and 22 pro cintiqs and purchased the Huion recently, I also own a iPad pro 12.9, but can't compare that with a traditional display art tablet. I agree that the drawing experience on this Huion is on par with Wacom's latest pro line. I also agree that the sparkle, color, build, fanless design and all other industrial design aspects are on par or better than Wacom's latest offering. I really appreciated the fanless design and build. IAF and overall drawing experiene seems on par for the most part, with the 22 having a slight edge. I am not sure what I felt that way, but in my testing the Wacom just felt a tad better. The biggest issue with this tablet is something you mentioned which will not affect the vast majority of people, which I am glad you did and managed to capture photos. The softness on this tablet and the Xencelabs are very close, but they both have excellent sparkle reduction. For me the softness was so apparent that I had to ultimately send the tablet back to Huion. It may be because my personal style is very line and clean edge heavy and I can easily detect blur. It almost seemed to me that depending on my eyes viewing angle to the tablet, the softness would change. It was almost so much that it made me feel nausea. I was very dishartned by this fact, because I wanted to keep this tablet as my daily. The size, and everything else was amazing, but I need clarity. I hope for the day when AG coatings are optional. Glare to me is a non issue, I prioritize picture quality above everything else besides drawing experience. Many professionals do professional work on an iPad which has no AG coating, you can use different nibs for a more paper like affect, or add your own if you wish. The high nit brightness on the iPad also combats glare. With all this being said, I am still debating to purchase the Wacom, it is extremely hard to justify the cost now a days, and I also can't understand the decision that Wacom continues to make about adding fans to their devices. With Huion and Xenclabs both showing that it is pointless. I do want to end on one note, recently I had the chance to go to a private demo from a tablet company (you will have to guess), and at that meeting they said they were going to be releasing the first OLED professional drawing tablet at GDC this march. It will be in the 16" range. Unfortunately the device was not showable but the rep said that it should start shipping close to after this date. I am holding out to see if this one alleviates the issues I have with sparkle, fan noise and hopefully blur. If not, I will most likely go with the Wacom 22 or 17 for my personal daily.
@thesevenpens
@thesevenpens 4 месяца назад
Thanks for the extensive comment. Lots for me to think about. AG treatment - lately I've been wondering about this also. For some people not having the AG etched glass works better - and it gives them the option to use a third party film to add as much AG as they need or simply to protect the glass. Fans - I really want to figure out why they do this. My initial thought is their devices draw more power (maybe for increased brightness) and then they need the fans to compensate. So this is something I hope to learn more about this year. OLED Tablet - oh wow. Will be curious to see that launched! I've been holding off on OLED tech in my monitors simply out of concern for how long I can expect the OLED to last and also burn in issues.
@3polygons
@3polygons 4 месяца назад
@@thesevenpens Apparently (as I have that fear, too), it seems QLED (which seems to be better than OLED) avoids the burning risk to a great extent. I'm still not completely happy about the idea... I opted by a cheaper Kamvas 22, even having the money for the Plus model - and better- just because it was " *Q*LED", and the change of a letter did nothing to make me lose the fear :D (Huion has been using this tech on their pen displays for a while, well, since that kamvas 22 Plus, I think) and I immediately expected the burn-in issue if purchasing the QLED version. Some people (and read some articles) have told me lately that it has the advantages (and more) of the rich color and other image quality matters of OLED, but in reality not the burn-in risks. What is not clear to me is if they are avoided it to a high degree, or fully. Having monitors for decades, and Wacom tablets for even more, I really love that my devices last crazy long. Not only to avoid e-waste and the environment matters... It's also better bang for the buck in the long run. @CaptainCactuar Your input is particularly appreciated. I worked in games too, but not AAA, so, at a much lower level in everything. It is not common, but very interesting to know every single bit of feedback from someone working in the high end. I myself decided since long that I am even more comfortable working with a classic XL and L Wacom tablet and an Eizo monitor. The color quality before and after hardware calibration in these is great, and I don't know what, but I still miss certain level of control with non wacom pens, but might be due to how I paint. And I do get mad with the loss of sharpness when the anti glare is too aggressive, but I also can't stand reflections, glare. So, besides posture and other issues, my only option seems to keep using a pro monitor and large Wacom "pen tablets", lol. :D
@pixelpusher1393
@pixelpusher1393 Месяц назад
@CaptainCactuar Very interesting comment - I replied to your comment under the video from Brad Colbow about this tablet, but in this comment here you answer the most important questions I had. I am having a very hard look at this tablet b/c I want to create a mobile workspace, but I fear the softness issue might be a dealbreaker for me as well. Already on Wacom Cintiq tablets, digital line work can appear soft depending on magnification and rotation of an image. Additional softness may well be the straw which breaks the camel´s back. I´m sincerely hoping Huion reads these comments and decides to make a version with a glossy screen to avoid this issue. The only alternative right now is the Wacom Cintiq Pro 17, which is prohibitively expensive, or the Cintiq Pro 16, which is too small for my taste.

Excellent video as always! Really love how in depth you go with these. Definitely been tempted to get one of these for myself haha In case it's useful to you, I've also tested the active area mapping issues with Huion drivers at some point last year (using a Kamvas 22 Plus). My primary setup was a Dell thunderbolt dock (WD19TBS) shared between an XPS 15 (9510) and an M1 Max Macbook Pro 14. The mapping failure happened pretty often with the Windows laptop, but I haven't been able to reproduce it on the Macbook at all. The way Windows handles multiple displays seemed to be one of the main problems in my setup. If I connected the dock to a different USB port or used a different HDMI adapter, Windows doesn't seem to recognize that the display is the same one. Because of this, when I used a different configuration, the Huion drivers would "default" to whatever the primary display was. In contrast, I think MacOS might be better at recognizing the same display coming over a different port, since it's usually able to keep OS level monitor arrangement settings as long as the monitor seems to have the same name. I also tested this on a desktop Windows PC, and it was obviously much less of an issue there since the tablet was always connected on the same HDMI port. This was last year though, so the driver situation may have changed a bit.

The description of pen tilt compensation is interesting. I heard from a friend who uses xp-pen artist pro 16 (gen2) that there is a serious problem with pen tilt compensation. If huion kamvas pro 19 doesn't have that problem as described in the video, huion is definitely a better product than xp-pen.

@JIMKHO
@JIMKHO 3 месяца назад
This issue seems to be a "serious" issue for artists who tilt pen a lot. My friend who uses xp-pen uses it that way. According to his usage experience, there was no problem with wacom products, but there was a problem with xp-pen products. The friend is arguing that this issue will be a big problem for other artists, but it's just an individual argument and the experience will vary from person to person. However, even in the Kamvas Pro 19 review Part2 posted by "The Honest Laboratories Review", there is a saying that Huion products are much better than xp-pen in terms of pen tilt compensation performance. (If you look at this video, he's tilting his pen side to side, and calls it "cursor accuracy".)

I had a chance to try the Kamvas Pro 19 and the Cintiq Pro 22 with a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra. They both worked as a monitor AND they both somewhat worked as a pen display to the point where I could use a pen on them. However - the experience was not great. Drawing with the pen lagged quite a bit - not sure what was the cause. But it was not a good drawing experience.

Very comprehensive... review :P as always. Your notes would be taken to a higher level if you dabbled into using a colour calibrator to check these gamut coverages, because so many of these tablets refuse to give the specs and only mention the gamut volume, perhaps a high percentage number to look good on paper, but then you receive it in your hands and calibrate it, and it fails to even reach 100% sRGB coverage. I think you should've mention ed that one potential issue of the USER mode colour setting - according to that reddit post, it doesn't properly adjust the white point which may be problematic as it will shift over time. And then... what, you cannot calibrate it? The colour modes will now be inaccurate
@3polygons
@3polygons 4 месяца назад
I also calibrate my tablets and monitors with a colorimeter, and have found issues when calibrating non wacom screens (and to be fair, many regular monitors). Also, there are many reviews that report on that issue of XP-Pen and Huion tablets (and other brands). But The Seven Pens is _unique_ in the findings about pen accuracy issues, lag, pressure problems, specific problems non detected by others; not to that level. The things to point out in these pieces of hardware could fill a book. many factors, IMO. To such point that I am OK with just finding the best "specialists" in certain areas. Also, color is quite complex and time consuming to review deeply and at a high technical level (to a point one would need an entire video for just color, if done well). But I share the huge focus on color, when thinking of any type of pen display or other monitors (one of the reasons why I trashed the pen display solution, and I do stick with a regular Eizo screen ...in the future, maybe a Benq, if this wonderful monitor goes the way of the Dodo). Edit: Also, in the video, clarifies that is not an expert in color, and why so doesn't review that in depth. I think that's very honest (and best take in that situation). After all, not getting paid by the brands or anything, kind of makes it totally a gift for the viewers.
@koyodraka
@koyodraka 4 месяца назад
You need to use an srgb_clamp tool to calibrate the wide color gamut display more accurately. This is a common mistake since each GPU acts differently. 7pen does have a note about this on his website.

23:47 Those driver issues, at least with Wacom, get a temporary fix by just restarting the Windows Wacom service - takes some seconds- (some people think the only way is entirely rebooting Windows). In the old bad times of the driver I used to even have a direct shortcut icon in the windows task bar for Windows Services! As it was frequent and focus breaking. I suppose it might be possible as well with Huion's (I have not had the issue with my old Kamvas 22). The issue itself permanently goes away with Wacom usually with a driver update (might be the same with Huion)... I tend to keep the version which works... :D With multiple displays, and this "disconnect", or problems of suddenly being able to access the GUI but not the painting canvas... often get solved by deactivating Windows Ink (at projection tab) in the tablet driver panel. It messes up with the mapping, IMO. Sleep mode does not help, at times. But I fixed it permanently for my Wacom tablets, it seems. But again, might not work with non Wacom brands. And some painting software does actually require Windows Ink (Photoshop used to, I don't know now...). For example, I found the issue with Affinity Photo, until I deactivated Windows Ink both in the Wacom driver panel (in the specific app profile there, not in general, although I have it deactivated in general, too), and the Affinity's preferences (using their "high precision" option instead). You can also choose in preferences/settings about this in Krita and Clip Studio.

I had to magnify the screen to 150% to make it more comfortable which makes it more like a 2.5k res.
