Adam Jones, guitarist from Tool, and Tom Morrello the guitarist from Rage were in a high school garage band back in the 80s. Imagine those talent shows.
@richard W That was ONLY this album, they’re debut album, that every single song is great. You can’t say that about any other album they put out. But still, not too many artists/bands have a “perfect” album. Very few.
When he says “ they are the teachers who taught me to fight me” he was referencing a field trip he took when he was in elementary school. The school bus was going by a housing project and the teacher said, “ ohh stay out of there kids, bad people live there.” Well Zack had many friends and family who lived in those projects. Zack is white and Mexican. He noticed from an early age the discrepancies between how the two sides of his family were treated in society. I love the end when he repeats “ All of Which are American Dreams” it’s so powerful. Zack does this in many songs, it’s a powerful tool to get people to REALLY listen to the message. Rage and NWA had a lot of the same topics but were treated very differently. The main reason IMHO, was their fan base. NWA had a mainly black fan base while Rage was mainly a white fan base. NWA got hassled by the police at their concerts. They just waited for a reason to bust up the show and arrest them, while Rage pretty much flew under the radar. Ohh they had a few run-ins with the authorities but nothing compared to NWA. In fact recently some republican politician that listened to them back in the day, called out Tom Morello for “becoming” too political!!!??? Tom was like “ bro, our message hasn’t changed in over 30 years, you just weren’t paying attention!”
Such a relatable experience I had in my schooling system. I came out super fucking white and I picked up real quick how differently teachers, PRINCIPALS even, treated my brother and sister from myself.
That's because politicians are full of hot air ......I have zero faith in that institution......the government et al that control...the powers that be....they are sooo frightened of RATM .....and they should be......that keeps my heart ❤️ fed...much love ❤️
Good ear! That was Maynard. You need to react to the song KRS-1 and Zach recorded in 1998! It’s called CIA ( criminals in action ) Zach is a revolutionary emcee
One life lesson I learned early on from the lyrics in these songs is to ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS! When people don’t want to answer them , you’re onto something. Stay informed, GET INVOLVED!
You nailed it that Maynard was the singer that came in. Rage and Tool have a lot in common, in that they’re both trying to shake people up out of their complacency and get us looking at the world and ourselves in a new way. Having Maynard on the track was not only super cool but just total synchronicity of two awesome talents.
That is indeed Maynard. Tool and RatM are very close socially, if not musically. Tom Morello and Adam Jones (tool’s guitarist) were friends in high school back in Chicago, and before Tool and RatM as we know them formed in the underground LA rock scene, Maynard was going to sing in a very early version of Rage. I may be incorrect, but I think I’ve read how it was Tom that introduced Maynard to Adam Jones, and that was part of the start of Tool (Maynard and drummer Danny Carey had already played together in the very indie and underground band Green Jellÿ). So yeah, the connection between the two bands runs deep
I'm so surprised r.a.t.m. hasn't been labeled as woke..... yet. You know that there is a certain political party that will come after them for being woke and spreading knowledge. I'm sure it's already in movement, won't be long before music becomes illegal. Definitely know your enemy. Props to you for playing and reacting to r.a.t.m.
Everyone always hypes up Zach and Tom morello (as they should), but I don’t think enough appreciation is given to the bass. It sets the mood of their songs. It’s like the under appreciated driving force of the songs. I’m not a music nerd so idk the terminology but it’s the bass line that lets me know a lot about the songs sound. But srsly rage is one of the most perfect bands for me. First they sound good, 2 they get you hype, and 3 they have strong socio political messaging. It’s like they were created in a lab to appeal to someone like me.
I know right!!!??? The bassist and drummer NEVER get enough love. The rhythm section is the scaffolding that holds everything up, but the vocalist and guitarist always get the most recognition.
@@kikivon3501 yep. I’m super picky about what songs I really love so I started really paying attn to the different instruments while trying to figure out what it was about a song that made me love it. I found one of my fav elements is the rhythm of a song. So now I tend to notice the different instruments more when I listen. Im not an expert or anything, I just have a better idea of what I like. It also got me thinking how the singer and lead guitarist always get the most attn but the backbone of a lot of songs is the bass and drum. I’m a big fan of the bass guitar in rage songs. It really sets the whole vibe of the song.
"vengeance, a badge, and a gun" - that is the line that put this on radar in 92 by tying it to widespread Los Angeles police violence against the poor and minorities. That said, this song is an exhortation to rise up in the wake of the Rodney King beatings and resulting LA Riots. The Maynard part you mentioned in the middle is very much an admonition of all of us who have not taken action to create the change we want to see. This song is really asking us how long we are going stand by, do nothing, and accept the nightmare.
I might forget some birthdays or a anniversary... but I will never forget the mosh pic @ Coachella1999 when this song played and the ending when the whole crow jumped . I'M 49 AND still RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE RABIA CONTRA LA MAKINA ✊
I always love new reactions to Rage. You should check out Run The Jewels - Close Your Eyes (And Count To F**k) feat. Zack de la Rocha (Official Video) El-P and Killer Mike are fire too.
If you love some of that counter culture content, you should start delving into some punk. There aren’t a whole lot of reactors doing punk, especially the good stuff The Clash Dead Kennedys Bad Religion Propagandhi Anti-Flag Against Me! Refused Those are just a few of my favs, but they have a lot in common with the hip-hop you’ve mentioned.
Maynard was nearly the singer for this band before Zack. The guitarist for Rage was/is friends with him. So glad that didn't happen though. They both belong in the bands they ended up in.
In today's society they would be repressed for "inciting violence" and considered "domestic terrorists" because they are all saying what we're all thinking 🤔
Yep that part is Maynard. Tool was in LA at this time and they were friends with a lot of artists in the scene like Henry Rollins, Rage, Green Jelly, etc. and they all collaborated together on different things. If you haven't heard it I recommend checking out The Deftones - Passenger.
That's Maynard singing. Also, that part has the only guest instrumentalist playing on the whole album as far as I know.. And much as you noted, it's the additional drums. During that part there's additional percussion sounding like someone playing drums on plastic buckets almost.
I'm not a smart man... i'd been listening to both Tool and RatM for years before I clicked that was Maynard. Very impressed you caught it on your first listen.
Had to be Maynard,I missed it for years. I played rage Working Out in gym,and Hours of yard work build and tearing down projects, with Tool And Rage every well until Phone or BT Speaker needed charged and how me Feeling Since 92 Rage for Morming Wake up, I could tell difference at Work if I raged to work or went blindly into work late
There really isn't a "bad" rage song, I feel. Those guys are the ones that are most socially relevant. Other bands are great, but in a different way. Led Zeppelin? One of the best of all time. But they speak to the soul and the ephemeral, not the real, like rage does. So in the end they are both amazing, but in different ways.
Rock = Rage = Rap. We knew the message then, we just didn't have the numbers to fight for ourselves & for each other. Fucking missed opportunity by Gen X to take the power back & look where we are
RatM is anthem music for me. Never gets old. You might like The Coup - The Guillotine. (Video too is not to be missed...) I'm new to your channel so maybe you heard em already, but I just discovered em a few years back...so yeah! Like your reacts!
I never heard of him. I clicked around on his page some. He has some interesting content. I subscribed to his channel. To hear some more. Thanks for the heads up
Haha. Right on brotha. I’ve heard that a few times in the comment section. It inspired me to make a true crime/scary story narration channel. Just kind of testing the waters. Check it out if you’re into that sort of thing. Thanks for the compliment www.youtube.com/@strangebarandgrill
But aim higher. Being that judgy doesn't help. Some ppl just finding RatM now! Idk the track names sometimes cuz we had mixtapes no internet. I only know album names listened to whole thing at a time.
You're digging rage because it's rock music about the struggles of YOUR community. See, us white boys ain't all bad. We made these guys millionaires because we also love their message 👊. And Zak is not under rated. Just not known well enough in his community
