The Virginia class is a class of nuclear-powered cruise missile fast-attack submarines, currently in the military service in the United States Navy. Designed by the General Dynamics's Electric Boat and the Huntington Ingalls Industries, the Virginia-class submarines are the American Navy's latest undersea warfare platform which incorporates the latest in stealth, intelligence gathering and weapons systems technology.

You can totally understand why Australia opted to buy these instead of the French subs once we made them available.

Is there any contract to "buy" this type of vessels ?
@ronn9853
@ronn9853 2 года назад
@@totorvdr5994 No contract yet, Australia has 5 different options. Buy an existing UK (Astute) or US (Virginia) sub, buy the yet to be built SSN(X) or SSN(R) class, and lastly to build a completely new sub derived from US and UK components. Buying Virginia class seems the most likely since it can be done sooner than the SSN(X) or SSN(R) and has a more efficient nuclear reactor to the Astute. However, nothing is locked into place. I believe that have 18 months to come up with a definitive procurement plan.

We should allocate twice the current budget in order to build and develop new submarines. Keep those engineers and builders busy. Each dollar spent on the USN submarine fleet has a very high return on investment. It takes a very hardcore kind of man to serve aboard a submarine. Everyone likes to to talk about SEAL teams and fighter pilots, but for me it's the USN submariners that have my highest respect and admiration. They are men among men! It requires high intelligence, maximum professionalism, extreme sense of duty, putting their civilian lives on hold, and in general having huge balls and ice in their veins!!

what return on investment?
@Chironex_Fleckeri
@Chironex_Fleckeri 4 года назад
@@truepatriot5425 Dollar for dollar, man for man, these subs are the best bang for buck. Powerful modern navies rely heavily on submarines. These subs threaten ballistic missile subs as well as other attack subs, AND they can protect carrier strike groups. Not only that. They gather some of the most sensitive intelligence information and are nearly constantly in a war-like state of readiness. In other words, they do their job whether they ever engage in combat or not.

We’re already doing that with Columbia class and SSN(X). There’s also the constant research into outfitting current boats with new tech. These things should be a source of pride for every American. IMO, the most complex and sophisticated machine ever built by human beings. Only 70 years ago, this was pure science fiction. Even today, when I tell people we have a nuclear powered submarine that can rain down more TNT than all the bombers combined in ww2, on any country in the world, by the time we’re done with our lunch break, people are shocked. Also, these weapons are the reason why the Cold War never turned hot.

I'm pretty sure the seawolf is still more complex and was built like 20 years ago.

@@Bitchslapper316 I meant nuclear submarines in general. But, yeah, you're right. Every new generation is even more complex and deadly.

Improve the finishing process of the subs. That type of welding is outdated.

Watch out for destroyers and anything anti submarine. Also stealth bomber aircraft can do mass destruction and are stealthy as well.

"Beat" The only way to prove if they are beatable or not.. We would need to be in a full on nuclear launch. You know.. The scenario where nobody wins.

Whats about the Astute ?
@Jack-bs6zb
@Jack-bs6zb 9 месяцев назад
The Astute is a better attack submarine, just as the Avro Vulcan wa a better strategic bomber than the B52 (check out Operation Skyshield 1 and Operation Skyshield 2).
