These Notion videos (and your templates) are absolutely fantastic man - you've saved me headaches and heartbreak trying to get my head around Notion - can't wait for the course for creators! Thanks heaps and keep up the amazing work
""Sometime I wanna be able to do the project right away even if I don't fully understand what is going on"" Exactly what I did with the masterclass and it was worth it! It was very complicated to learn, explanation was too freaking fast lol.. took me more than 4 hours to finish the project but I was able to absorb and retain way more than I expected.
These materials are amazing, except the add inbox to Tasks bit was incomprehensible to me. Does the video need to be updated to fit the current templates?
Hey Thomas. I've been following your content since 2014 (exactly when you started off pushing hard on College Info Geek) Loved every piece of content (RU-vid, podcasts, blogs, etc.) you have shared and learned a lot from you over the years :) You definitely have a fan in me, amongst thousands of others I am sure!
Amazing content, thank you Thomas! I've seen you integrated the Habit Tracker into the Dashboard as a page link. I was wondering if it could be possible to have your "Daily Habits Tracker" inside the Daily Tasks. Ideally the daily tasks list would include your recurring tasks from the habit tracker and your one-time tasks of the day (like going to the grocery shop). The days inside the daily tracker are not databases so I'm not sure that can be automated. Thank you!
I've only used Loom for the Ultimate Tasks build guide. Funnily enough, it's the most popular video on this channel, which probably proves how little the extra production value matters haha. Recording tutorials with Loom is MUCH easier than the way I do it, which is why I also use Loom when recording support videos for my customers. But for TF Explains, I like going the extra mile to record the face cam separately so I have flexibility to move it around in post.
@@ThomasFrankExplains Thank you for that extra explanation! Very valuable for whoever is wanting to do some content creation where aditional content can be added to another Video. Love it!
I am a huge fan of your notion fundamentals. I currently am using your ultimate task template (absolutely loving it). This one seems similar. Can you explain one versus the other benefits? Do I need both.? Just in the beginning stages of learning. Your videos are truly amazing and extremely helpful.
Ultimate Tasks is mainly just a task and project management system. This tutorial is for a dashboard that serves as a sort of home base for everything - so that includes Ultimate Tasks, but also my note-taking system, content management system, etc. Of course, you could always just turn the Ultimate Tasks dashboard into a more general purpose dashboard as well! The template I've provided with this video is more useful as an example than as a ready-to-go piece of software (unlike Ultimate Tasks, which is intended to be used as-is)
I have a question, with the "Ultimate tasks for Notion" usage, do I have to duplicate it in my personal notion or can I just link to the original pages and chage it to my personal preferences?
In terms of setting up a business page dashboard... This is probably up there in top 2 for me. This personally will provide me with say 90% of what I need. Do you run 1-1 workshops?
Awesome tutorial, the best I've seen on Notion. Thank you very much! Also, you are a wonderful musician, very pleasant music. Good luck to you, friend!
You are an excellent teacher. Very grateful for what I have learned in the course. Before I found your videos, I has spent days watching videos and trying to figure out Notion and I was about to pull my hair out. Your quality training saved me (and my hair). Thanks.
Can"t get such view. Like Icon-Linked_DB_Name-list_of_views and then bottom view output I get List of Views then bottom Icon-Linked_DB_name then bottom view output
Thank you so much for your explanation, it really helps to improve my notion and youtube flow. Btw. did anyone ever noticed that your "hello there" and your appearance is totally in Obi Wan Kenobi Style? Love it!
As I try to follow along with the video, at 7:05 when you paste the URL and are able to "Link to page", I am met with a message saying - "The page with the original synced block has been deleted. View deleted page" is there a workaround or am I too late to follow this guide
This video needs to be updated. Many changes have been made both in Notion and the used templates here. Otherwise it's a pretty good video about creating a personal Dashboard.
Great content! Wanted to ask, is there a way in which we could get insights to our own notion templates? Like, if we had the habit tracker, could we be able to see our performance in charts, trends, see insights, set our own goals/KPIs,etc so we can identify almost for sure in what we need improvements (even in our personal lives haha)? If yes, how :) and also, just wondering, is it possible too to create our formulas somewhere? For example, In case we wanted to define conditional KPIs. Thanks in advance, i repeat, great content congrats :)
At 10', why a duplicate ? I don't understand: this will create two different instances of the database, and if an item is added from the copy, the main database will not be populated?
I'm gratefull you´re back periodically!! Just when i´m re-starting my channel workflow with your templates!! Greetings from Portugal. PS - will you release an advanced formulas course?
I definitely have a formulas video (maybe more than one) planned for once Fundamentals is done. Likely won't charge for it! Right now I'm just charging for Creator's Companion and may add in a course element to it in the future.
I think it's overdose at this point and time wasting. I just used some simple reference block link like on a website navbar just to make the navigation easier
Those are manually-created links. Just type out the text you want, highlight it, and there will be a link menu option. See the section on editing with the toolbar here for more: thomasjfrank.com/a-guide-to-editing-and-formatting-text-in-notion-notion-fundamentals/
this is so helpful and hands-on walk-thru really helps me getting it! Thank you thomas!! Could you please please do another masterclass video on your budget tracker please? thanks in advance! have been hating using all the budget tracking app on the market !
Do you have any videos on creating a dashboard for project managers to track progress on projects visually? My primary complaint with Notion is that my ADHD-brain can't read it-- it's just a massive jumble of indiscernible text. The organization and power of it are impressive, but I can't read what I'm seeing when I click on a page or database. Where can I find advice (or templates) for laying out a horizontal (multi-column), visually aesthetic dashboard where I can see, at a glance, the progress percentage of projects or even a department-wide deadline calendar? Visuals... like a green progress bar, a pie graph, a color-coded timeline calendar, anything that isn't text... I want to click on it for more info, but I don't want all the info hurled at me on a macro, multi-department workflow overview. Streamlining for minimalism would be helpful as well. Every time your sidebar showed up on screen it nauseated me lol. How in the world do you find anything in that endless list? Are there videos that exist somewhere in sidebar organization and maintenance?
Hey Thomas, great video. Very helpful tutorial. Just wondering, the Daily Tasks in the Ultimate Tasks section is different from the Daily Tasks you added to the Dashboard, I didnt see you connect the two. Can you tell me how I could go about doing that?
So you’ve discovered Notion and you sense its immense power but you’re not sure how its advanced features might fit your needs. This is the video you need :-)
This video is a bit old, and Notion has added a lot of new features since I published it. When it was published, you couldn't duplicate a database view unless there were already 2 or more views.
What is your definition of the “Inbox”? Is it the place where you enter all your tasks or is connected in someway to your email Inbox? Thanks for the clarification💯 Keep up your amazing work - I LOVE your videos!!!
Really not bad the video, i have to say that i will follow up your other videos to better understand how to use Notion, because i think you made it better then them. Is only a bit difficult to follow you on everything when you have the app in front of you for just one day. But anyway, thank you to providing this video, this is really helpful! :)
I want to be able to have the functionality of the Ultimate task but have it separated from the Team Notion that I have. I could make a tag that acts as a forcing function and then filter it out on the Team section views but this seems like an unoptimal path. I'm currently messing around with simply duplicating the entire All Task database, call it something like Quests (it's mainly for home/chores) - this way I could have it in my private workspace but I'd be interested in your take on this - it's nice to keep home/work separated but I wish there was a simple "new task" button I could press for anything, and it would go in the right section. (Also, I'm not sure my teammates care about knowing "Do Laundry" quest, even though they'd have to change filter for the Tag to see it)
Would you do something similar for (don’t shout at me) Apple notes? I just can’t put my life on notion for fear of it disappearing one day. Plus I just love how simple notes is. *braces for abusive comments*
I've known about your work with College Info Geek since 2016, my first year of undergrad. Amazing how far you've progressed. You the man, dawg, thanks for keeping it real, you have a fan in me
Excellent, Thomas!! About your Master Task Database (All Tasks) and your Video Project Tracker: Do you embed your Video Tasks INTO to the Master Task Database? If so, how? Thank you!
It would have been helpful to explain how to use the templates too. Did all the things you do in the video, but I just got links to public pages. And they are a lot. Is there an easy way to convert those public pages to personal pages? I need to duplicate every one?
Thank you so much ! I needed to improve my work flows with notion and create my own dashboard. I spent the day on it, tried several versions and I'm quite happy with the result ;)
Emojis can be typed anywhere, just like normal text! You just need to bring up the emoji keyboard. Windows Key + ; on Windows, Ctrl + Cmd + Space on a Mac 😁
Hi Thomas, as I see some guitar in back I would like to ask you what you think about using notion in music, so guitar learning? It could be a good idea for a video
This is a "skip ahead" video for my Notion Fundamentals series, which starts COMPLETELY from scratch: thomasjfrank.com/fundamentals/ The purpose of this video is to allow people to build the example project in that course right away. I try to accommodate multiple learning styles and speeds - the course lessons show everything from scratch in excruciating detail, while this video lets people go quickly and build the whole example project in one go.
I just wanna say thank you very much for showing us how to make a dashboard it's been a very big help and I was hoping to share a screenshot of my dashboard to you but I guess there's not a function to do this on the chat
You're in luck! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1tZ5-niQtLw.html You may also enjoy: thomasjfrank.com/creator/how-to-be-a-youtuber-the-ultimate-guide/
So, where I am now, I need to revamp my organization to reflect my current lifestyle and data retrieval needs. BUT I have a couple of years worth of notes and data already in the current system. Modifying the current system displaces the data from related tables and links. Rebuilding from scratch duplicates the work and slows the system down as more data is stored. Even if I managed to archive and offline the old data, it would be lost forever to some digital library that would soon become obsolete. Paper and pen aren't automatically cross indexed nor searchable. It's almost as if one should copy their best or most important entries into a paper journal, and indexing them in Notion.
I can provide some context from how we managed our migration to Creator's Companion after I finished building it. We knew all the relations would be broken after moving content to the new database, so we first made a complete duplicate of our entire content tracking system. We moved all the content from this copy over to the new database, retaining the original version as a reference. Then I had one of my team members take an afternoon to go through our Creator's Companion instance to recreate the relations (Sponsors, Channels), using the original copy of the old system as a reference. Another bit of context that may be helpful - when I switched fully from Evernote to Notion, I didn't copy everything over. Instead, whenever I need something from Evernote, I copy it over then. This annoys the completionist/purist side of me, but realistically, most of what I have in Evernote is stuff I'll never need again. So I didn't worry too much about it.
This was a very nice walkthrough of creating a dashboard in Notion. However, I saw that you have a "Second Brain" template with much of the same functionality. If I wanted to move from using a dashboard similar to what is built in this video, is there an easy way to migrate everything into the "second brain" template or would I have to do it manually? Thank you for yet another useful video. 😃
Transferring content is possible, though the difficulty can depend on how complex your current structure is The basic concept is that you'd select what's in your existing databases and use the Move To command to move them to Ultimate Brain's databases. The difficulty comes in that Relations between databases aren't always maintained. That said, my support staff is available to answer questions about this if you do buy the template. I'll also mention that personally, I don't always worry about moving everything over from existing systems. For example, when I switched from Evernote to Notion, I didn't import all my notes from Evernote. Instead, I go grab the ones I need on an as-needed basis. This lets me use my improved systems without worrying too much about transferring over a ton of data that I don't often need to see!
@@ThomasFrankExplains Thank you for answering my question. I took it as an exercise to create the Personal Dashboard as well as the Notes Manager from scratch as explained in your videos. After I review the Second Brain video, I should be in a better position to decide if I'm going to buy the Ultimate Brain template. If I decide to do this, I will reach out to your support staff for assistance. Thanks again and keep up the outstanding work!
These tutorials have been great! One question: your toggled "All Tasks" list view at 11:30 is perfectly aligned. My checkboxes are all over the place, depending on the length of the task title. How can I re-format this?
GERAT STUFF, but now You can copy and sync data base... so if there is need to always make a linked database in notes, when we use the same list view in Dashboard and in Notesystem?
There’s still quite a difference - a Linked Database lets you create unique views of a database with their own filter, sort, Grouping, etc. So use them if you need that, otherwise a synced block works great for showing the exact same DB view in multiple places!
Help can anyone answer this for me …have 3 dashboards (work ,home business) but using the ultimate task manager ( which is stunning) have the same info in on each dashboard…can i unlink them ??so i have individual task managers for each dashboard???
You could do it that way, but I might suggest adding a Context property to your task manager instead. Maybe a Select that can tag tasks as Home, Work, etc. Then you could add a filter for the correct context on each dashboard.
I love the “project” category and how that can make sub tasks in the overall database. I was wondering if there’s a way to have a higher categorization, I’m trying to make something called “Goals” (general aspirations for life). It would be nice to have that work the way projects works now as an overview but then inside that goal might be a project and in that might have sub tasks. Is that possible in notion and could you give me some tips perhaps?
Yep, that's possible and also built into my Ultimate Brain template! Here's the section of my overview video that shows how I have them implemented: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vs8WQh2k-Ow.html
