So if you manage to successfully get through all the steps (in less than 2 hours) outlined in this video, give yourself 25,000 huge wins... Great concept, but in the current form, it's way too complicated to set up.
I tried to do a complex system like this in the past (not nearly as many formulas, but a similar amount of DB relations), and in my experience, the performance/speed of Notion DBs fell apart very quickly as I added more and more entries, especially with a lot of relations... It was pretty much unusable after a few weeks of doing 20-40 tasks per day. That was a while ago, so maybe Notion's gotten more optimized? Or maybe we're being overly optimistic as the system hasn't been out for more than a few weeks. I think I'll give this a "stress test" simulating a few months worth of activity (by duplicating tasks) to see how it performs.
Reporting back: Turns out Notion's more optimized than I remember it being -- they've improved it quite a bit in the past year or so unless I'm remembering wrong how it performed in the past... I had well over 1200 tasks (which even if you're doing 30 tasks a day -- doable if you track small tasks or sub tasks -- is 40 days), and it seemed to be working fine, especially in the filtered dashboard. The master DB was pretty unresponsive, though. I'm not sure how the extra-long-term (aka a year) would be, but I guess you could make a new character every year and try to beat your previous high score. Either way, I'm gonna stick with Todoist for tasks and Notion as a wiki. As nice as the customization is in Notion, it still feels way too "hacked together" when using Notion as a task tracker. Not to mention, I've never truly felt motivated by self-gamification attempts. I could see this being more interesting if an employer is setting the tasks and difficulties, and you would be able to use earned gold to gain things in a workplace setting. I think not being able to gamify myself is similar to how I can't tickle myself, maybe. 🤷♂️️
I want to love Notion but there are just some things about it that make it not good for me. Mainly their web clipper. Hopefully they spend more time fine tuning it.
There web clipper does need some work, for sure, but more importantly their offline experience and search - in my opinion. But yes John, I think many people like yourself will convert. :-)
Love to see how gamification can be implemented across many tools in order to rise the productivity of our teams. From our end we use it in a very direct manner as a means to reach increased engagement in learning soft skills. This increases the amount of productivty but gamification must not stop there and examples like the one presented by Notion improve the overall perfomance of teams all around the world.
