Coach Gerry Faust's greatest victory. The un-ranked Fighting Irish shut down Panther's quarterback Dan Marino and freshman Allen Pinkett scores in the 4th consecutive game.
Pitt never has, nor will it ever, recover when it decided in 1982 to not let football get bigger than its almighty Mission Statement. The poor handling of the football program since then tells me a bunch of 10-year olds could have made better decisions. It has a good guy at the helm currently in Narduzzi, but surely will fire him because that is what Pitt does. Then it makes another mediocre hire because the school won’t spend for a proven coach.
A commenter from the now-defunct Cardiac Hill site stated that George Welsh was ready to board a plane to interview for the Pitt job and was told that Pitt found their guy (Fazio).
+ripperduck Notre Dame had lots of talent, too. Gerry Faust was a great recruiter but couldn't coach, sort of like Michigan pre-Jim Harbaugh. Michigan had talent. Harbaugh gets the same team but wins while UM's two previous coach sucked.
And the beginning of the end, letting Jackie Sherrill walk, Pitt arrogantly thought Serafino "Foge" Fazio would pick up where he left off. Not even close, this was the last time Pitt sniffed #1... Thanks AD Ed Bozik for ruining what could have been a dynasty...
This was the last game where Pitt was ranked No. 1 and it's no surprise. The school hasn't been serious about winning since Sherrill left and made the cheap hire with Fazio in 1982. It's been average to bad hires ever since for the program. Gottfried went 2-2 versus Holtz and Paterno, beat Ohio State but the he butted heads with the administration, who was about to put academic recruiting restrictions in place, hence the terrible 1990s for the football program. Pitt has no problem putting its hands out for conference television revenue but refuses to get dirty in its recruiting to become a better football program. I love this video seeing both uniforms, the crisp fall afternoon, hearing Harry Kalas and seeing how college football used to be televised.
With 2 and 3 star recruits, Pitt has beaten in the last 3 years a top 5 Penn St and at top 5 Clemson and was beating Notre Dame the entire game this year until 5 minutes left in the game, how many titles does ND have in the last 29 years...same as Pitt LMFAO
Oh please don’t even compare these 2 programs last 29 years. Notre Dame is and has been extremely competitive playing a national schedule. Don’t be a yinzer
@@TheDogger4 What is exactly your point, I follow both of these programs for different reasons, so I know the type of players both programs recruit and get and it still doesn't change the fact that neither team has won a title in a really long time
I wasn't at this game, but I was at the Michigan game...first game ever under the light at ND stadium, as I remember....I think I was 15.....damn, what a good time!
Listen to the sound of this game/clip. Whoever was the technician did a great job. Harry Calas was perfect, but you also got the ambient sound of the crowd/stadium, which gave the video a tremendous amount of momentum and power. The broadcast crew were made up of experts, it's apparent from the tremendous quality of the broadcast. Honestly, much of what we get now isn't this good...
Bama has taken over. College Football has become Game of Thrones. Who can beat the mighty Alabama? It's amazing how USC fell off after Pete Carroll jumped ship after the NCAA started investigating the program.
Penn State were national champions at the end of the 1982 season (they beat Notre Dame 24-14 the week following this game). Pitt was #10 in the final AP and #9 in the final UPI. ND was not ranked after going 6-4-1.
RocketShark 1982 was a weird year. Pitt was the consensus #1 with Marino back for his senior year (guys actually played all 4 years then), but this weird loss, the L to eventual NC Penn State, then the even weirder 7-3 loss in the Cotton Bowl made this a disappointing year for Pitt, and like we said, they’ve never been the same.
The 1979 Pitt team is imo the greatest most talented team NOT to win the national championship. Lost 1 game all yr the 1st game @ FSU in a driving rain storm.that roster was an NFL team and I'm no homer, been a wolverine fan all my life, but my God what team Pitt had during this era.
+mustaffa1611 No, 5:50 is the best part and I remember this play. I was 11 and watching this game with my granddad. This was the best part for me because I witnessed the sheer joy in my granddad's eyes as Pinkett took flight on this play.
Julius Dawkins....#80 Monessen Standout...Marino to Dawkins produced some magical moments...& the fumble wasn't one of them,BUT.....JD wasn't the only player to ever fumble the football...and without that passing combo,of Marino to Dawkins Pitt isn't #1 going into ND game...
Yeah, it was a 12-0 win in 2000, the only 21st century Pennsylvania Classic game. Even though you can't stand Penn State, I'm sure you also miss that old rivalry. Pitt moving from the BE to the B10 would encourage that. The rivalry with Ohio State is the closest thing that has the kind of rivalry history but still, they don't compare. I think it's also the most played B10 team of PSU's with a 12-12 overall record.
I know that stuff like "48-14" was real popular back when the rivalry was big. Pitt and PSU had a great rivalry, there was some mud throwing from both sides, though. But I follow all 3 teams, and anytime I make bets with family or friends involving those 3, it's point spread over or under and not a pick a team (and we decided that if the other team wins, nobody wins any cash). This year my teams went 1-2 in bowls, but I was happy to see Notre Dame get a bowl win.
Interesting. While one would expect the No. 1 Pitt team to be loaded with future NFL talent, ND was also loaded with future NFL starters. Yet, ND finished 6-4-1 that year.
Kalas and al Michaels were/are my favorite announcers in sports (Philly bias here). Actually a PSU fan and disappointed we just don’t play these 2 teams anymore
Speaking of Pitt, I'm happy to admit I was wrong about my "slow death of the program" prediction, since Pitt is coming back. Unfortunately, another former eastern power, Syracuse, is probably beyond repair, and their slow death is complete. I think any new coach they get has to rebuild the Orangemen from scratch.
Blair Kiel. While freshman starting at the QB position has become almost routine, Blair was the first four-year starter since Gus Dorais. Part of the reason for this is freshmen were ineligible to play for many decades. This was Kiel's junior year.
This was a great game, Notre Dame is my second favorite team and Pitt is my third favorite (Penn State is my top team), so these kinds of games are fun to watch but at the same time you almost hate to see them play each other.
I'm the one with the weirdest situation here. Penn State is my top team, Notre Dame is my second favorite team, and Pitt is my third favorite. I don't like to see PSU play ND, but I root for PSU, and I don't like to see ND play Pitt but I root for ND in that case, but I do like to see PSU play Pitt (I miss that rivalry), but I'm actually a fan of two teams that have fanbases that don't like my top team. Weird, isn't it?
I saw at least one AF-ND game in person at ND Stadium, IIRC John Carney missed a short field goal that gave AF the win. A tough loss for Faust. He had several other close losses.
Oh yeah, those, I forgot about those. Every fanbase has fans who do stuff like that. For example, some Wisconsin fans like to put pennies in snowballs and hit people with them.
I think he took a step before he started to bobble it so it would still be a catch today. But the camera was a split second late so it's not conclusive to me.
