Past Lives Project is an Arts Council England and Heritage Lottery Funded Project working in 8 areas across the Midlands. In each region we work with the community through open days, home visits, workshops and events with societies, schools and FE Colleges.
In each region we call out for amateur home cine film that illustrates daily life, local street scenes, people at work and families at play.
Past Lives Project digitises these home movies which are then edited in to new film which is screened with a live music performance.
The performance day includes spoken memories and photos that we have also gathered whilst working with the community, this forms part of an ongoing archive that is available online.
Through our Past Lives Project, Freefall Arts aim to raise awareness about how valuable these films are in the context of social history and to preserve them for future generations.

What a mess the City of Nottingham has become. The planners, the architects and the City Council should hang their heads in shame for what they have done to this historic City. The old slums had to go yes but now it's all concrete blocks. Some beautiful Victorian buildings have been flattened and I bet there were some brown envelopes passed across a few tables as well.

The devastation caused by those you mention and it never ends. Ripping out all the exceptional railway architecture, lines and tunnels all of which could of really been back in service today. This 'slums' thing, this is really propaganda and greed motivated, the councils have this sinister relationship with ''architects'' and ''builders'' all to line pockets so the term 'slums' is very convenient. Double glazed, damp proof and central heating and decent happy home owners and they would no longer be slums, many would be very sought after now and all would hold there value against the obscenities that replaced them. Take care everyone and plant something in your garden.

this is proper history, i was one those scruffy lads with shorts on..lived Alfred st. north and south, Truman St, Union rd, and a few others..went to shelton st school..1961..went to sat morning pictures at the Cavo..saw the lone ranger there

Nevermind WW2, many decisions taken during the 60's and 70's really screwed us up as a country. We're still paying today, for poor decisions relating to transport infrastructure, and the demolition fine (and perfectly functioning) public buildings, that were made during those two decades. Some of these decisions were more catastrophic than others - like getting rid of the entire GCR, including Nottingham's Victoria station. It may have been a 'duplicate' line, but it was faster than the Midland Mainline which survived. Plus it was built to continental standard - so could have taken future HS2 trains, plus Eurostars, and also TGV's. I'm not sure we've learnt either. Mistakes that were made in the 60's could happen again in future years.

Agreed. The GCR had built in expansion for track widening and was the straightest main line.

Ah yes, the Victoria center. An absolute concrete monstrosity. They could easily have left the building alone and built behind and below it. The building could have been converted to any number of uses.

Trevor Robjnson all very true unfortunately,You have only to look at some of the walks round Nottingham films here on You Tube to see the achitectural vandalism that was done to the city mainly in the 60's and 70's The demolition of the Victoria Station, and the construction of what is a concrete and glass eyesore, the concreting over of the Grantham Canal, the destruction of the T Bailey Foreman building, the tearing up of Slab Square and the construction of a nondescript Eurosquare. Incidentally who had all that white marble? The failure to properly oversee alterations to some of our most treasured buildings., the total destruction of Drury Hill which ran from the lacemarket down to Broad Marsh, (with another total eyesore as a replacement}.The Council should all be made to watch these walk round studies of Nottingham's architecture until they have learned not to do any more damage to what is still a beautiful city.

The Victoria Centre is a hideous monstrosity compared to the old station of the same name. It is a pity that like at Birmingham New Street the railway could not have been maintained underneath the shopping and car park area.

Seeing the famous water clock in the Victoria centre even way back then brings back memories of in the 90s when my grandparents took me into Nottingham for an outing. Who remembers the elizaphone man who always sat outside Debenems . When he past away a few years back all the shops and store staff attended his funeral but i don't think anyone knew who was or his name because he was non verbal and refused to give interviews to press or talk to anyone. Would have been nice to know his story ,maybe one day they might find out and make a film about him. Maybe he just liked to be a mystery who knows.

St Ann's is like a ghost town now . Most of the problems from the 90s & 2000s have gone I.e gun crime & gangs. It's a travesty they knocked that whole area down in the 60/70s, surely they could of modernised them . But just like other parts of Nottingham that wasn't the way .

the car park in vic centre lol. no cars in it. not like nowadays. lucky to get a space. I can remember the centre just like that. it was dark n gloomy though

All this was sacrificed in the name of the car, thankfully although too slowly for my liking they are starting to undo some of the damage. The buildings won’t return but when the poisonous and reckless deafening cars are kept away they will leave behind a communal space in which community can flourish.

shame on the council. why did they leave these good people to live in such squalor for so long? hopefully this will never happen again, the kids still create their own fun though, much bettter than todays obsession with computers in some way though.
