@atharvarale3362 2 года назад
That fifth set might just be the highest order of tennis ever. It's something only these two guys can reach and I think the third set of the semi final between these two at RG 2021 comes close but my god, a mid game standing ovation just sums that set up totally. This was also the greatest slam ever with respect to ELOs and overall matches. The last time that The Big 4 were the semi finalists at a slam and Novak playing two five setters that too against two of the greatest fighters the game has ever seen and winning them both just makes his status/case as the GOAT even stronger. I think he is the greatest to ever grace our beautiful sport.
@EvaJK
@EvaJK 5 лет назад
That's what happens when the 2 best fighters of the game meet! Nadal should have lost the 4th set as Djokovic was better. But he somehow returned everything in the important points and managed to steal the set purely by heart and mental strength. A truly amazing fighter in every match he plays! In the 5th they both had some games where the exhaustion overwhelmed them and you could see that on their feet movement and rushed shot selections. First it was Djokovic who quickly seemed to be struggling both physically and mentaly. Which is understandable since he had played another 4 hours 2 days ago and also had given everything in the previous set and came sooo close to winning the match but somehow he is still on the court! But then it's his time to show what a fighter he is. He survives this breakdown and manages to take some breaths and refocus. Then it's Nadal's time to struggle (especially since the middle of the set) and Djokovic doesn't miss the opportunity to capitalise on this. Nadal was still fighting at his best (he came really close breaking back) but unfortunetely this time his best was not good enough due to the exhaustion. And aaaall this when they had already played 3 extremely physical sets! If that's not a classic match and one of the best in tennis history I don't know what is..

Note how in the shot of Djokovic's girlfriend watching that long point in the fifth set, she gets out of her seat a beat before the rest of the crowd--she rises not when Djokovic actually wins the point, but when Nadal goes to the backhand slice, setting up the approach and volley. Lady knows her tennis.

This has to be one of the grittiest, toughest and most competitive individual rivalries in sports history. Up there with Ali and Frazier, Messi and Ronaldo, Senna and Prost... People may argue Federer V Nadal is a more exciting matchup but apart from their Wimbledon final in 2008 and AO final in 2009 I don’t see any of their other matches dragging each player to their both physical and mental boundaries as this one. I’m so glad I was able to see this match live and though I wasn’t there in person I felt the tension from both players through the tele screen. As Marvin Hagler said before his fight with Thomas Hearns ‘’It’s a mental toughness and that’s what I feel war, that’s what’s on my mind.’’

natoskull2 Yeah man, AO2012 final and FO2013 semi are almost mirror images of each other. In AO2012 Djoker had the dominance edge for more of the match and “should” have closed it out in 4 sets, but Rafa’s incredible resilience brought a 5th set against all odds, and he was up a break but missed an easy shot and wound up getting immediately broken and losing late in the set. In FO2013 Rafa had the dominance edge for more of the match and “should” have closed it out in 4 sets, but Nole’s awesome endurance brought a 5th set against all odds, and he was up a break but screwed up an easy shot and wound up getting immediately broken then losing late in the set. @@ASmeteor not a good analogy. Djokovic is not the best candidate to win the USO, any year. Actually Nadal is slightly better than him there, the h2h records show that but also because it’s a slower court. But AO Djokovic is the king there, 10 times including the most recent two.
