Feel Djokovic has forehand which seems less complicated (racket flow )meaning he would be more consistent even when the balls are fast or even when it is heavy. And the same consistency would prevail even his fifth set when he is tired.

Thanks Ryan for the comparison. I’ve found that keeping that off-hand up really helps me to turn my body and get effortless power. Is it possible to lower the ball on the Top-spin to around knee height? I really struggle getting under low balls and applying top spin while hitting low. Thanks!!
@2MinuteTennis
@2MinuteTennis 2 года назад
Hey Damien so glad keeping the off hand up is helping. It’s one of my favorite tips on the forehand. And yes the height is adjustable so you can lower it to knee level. To help with low balls, really work on swinging inside out/away from the body. The racket should go from below your hand to above your hand while hitting. They will put topspin on low balls. Here’s the link if you need it. Thanks!! topspinpro.com/ref/2minutetennis/

Sinners forehand is better and will be on different levels by the time he reaches the same age as Djokovic. More advanced players will choose this technique in the future. It allows less time to reach acceleration and deal with fast and low balls and has the ability to produce cross court bombs off fast balls. Recreational players will not necessarily benefit from a higher take back as they will find it harder to release their wrist on lower or faster balls.

Thanks Ryan, this is a great subject! You mentioned two points that I agree with: "Sinner turns lower" and "Sinner uses a different power source", but then you didn't go into details of why and what. I think Sinner gets his power mostly from his right leg and that is what makes him different from others. He turns lower because he is loading on his knee. When hitting the ball, he unloads on his right leg, pushing forward against the ground and that gives him a lot of power. For this unloading to be complete he needs to take a wider step forward on his left leg. In this position, to keep his balance he has to swing his racket further back towards the fence. This all allows him to swing backward faster. All the extra action we see in his backswing is because of the extra racket speed. He also does similar loading on his left knee for his backhand. Most players today don't use much leg power when hitting groundstrokes. I think that is going to change in near future and Sinner is the beginning of what will become a trend.

Wait, so should we raise the left hand? :D Jokes aside, to me the raised left hand stops the body rotation, so the racquet can accelerates forward to contact, instead of feeling like stuck behind the body. In other words, the feel for me is the racquet being dragged at start of the swing but is "flying off" at contact, and the transition point is the exact moment the left hand is raised. Great videos!

The main difference between these players' forehands is that Sinner's is all about power while Djoko's is about versatility. Djokovic' forehand is an underestimated weapon: he can go for power, flatten it out or create a very loopy shot. You don't see this from a deep comparison of two isolated shots on training. Yes, Sinner has more coil and lag in this video, probably altogether. Djokovic is getting more of a groove here, while in matchplay his body will be much more involved. Also, where exactly the racket is pointing during the takeback is irrelevant in my opinion. Fundamentally, these are both modern forehands, with similar grips, fast intitiation, contact in front with upward motion to generate topspin, and a complete 360 follow through.

Your finish is so different from any pro that I actually wander if it makes any difference at all… you basically end with your racquet pointing up, they have much more of wrist work then you have. This implies the racquet ends up basically behind their shoulders. I think this gives much more rotation to the ball. Indeed even though most of the rotation happens after the contact, the acceleration they need to make the rotation happen starts much sooner…
@2MinuteTennis

You are 100% correct. But my job as a teacher is to take into consideration who I’m teaching and who’s watching my videos. The vast majority of my viewers are over the age of 4.0, average athlete, and average level of play. If I start teaching “wrist work” I’m going to destroy people’s tennis games. I take my job very seriously. If people want a channel that’ll teach them exactly what Nadal or any other player does then they’ll need to find a new channel. Just like 5th grade teachers tailor what they teach for their students and don’t teach like they’re a college professor, I do the thing on my channel. I’ve taught for 25 years. It’s one thing to teach…it’s another for people to learn. I can teach until I’m blue in the face but if people can’t learn what I’m teaching then I’m accomplishing nothing. There are channels on RU-vid that focus solely on what advanced biomechanics of tennis. It’s entertaining and fascinating but to be honest I’m not sure how much it helps. My goal is to have the most helpful channel on RU-vid. That might mean I need to stay a “5th grade teacher”.
@antoninofamulari6159
@antoninofamulari6159 2 года назад
@@2MinuteTennis Thanks for your answer. Just to be clear, I’ve only been playing tennis for 8/9 months, but I do take it very seriously and play a LOT XD;. Furthermore, everything I do, I try to understand every bit of it; and if you play tennis for 8-10h/week for 8 months and spend a lot of time studying, you eventually do master top-spin and, in general, different forehand styles. That being said, yours is by far my favourite tennis channel, all media combined. Your explanation are crystal clear and I do try to learn a lot from them. So by no means was I criticising. Quite the contrary, I was genuinely trying to understand. Now the point is, trying to adopt myself the different styles of forehand, I’m under the impression that indeed, what actually makes the difference from one style to another, is indeed the wrist rotation that you’re able to achieve, which in turn translates into ball rotation. Of course you can obtain ball rotation by lifting the racquet up a little more, but it’s almost inconsequential when comparing it with what you can obtain with proper wrist rotation. Which is why Sinner’s forehand has more of it and he can hit harder; because indeed, by definition the racquet has way more rotational momentum for the mere fact that it’s flipping. However, the difference in ball rotation between the two styles is minimal if you don’t really make the whole extra rotation you can achieve with Sinner’s forehand happen. Which is the while point of my comment. In other words, what Sinner’s forehand allows you to achieve is a much more pronounced rotation, which in order to not be wasted you do have to let go till the back of your shoulders. If you don’t, not only are you kind of wasting energy, but you might also incur into injuries; because the acceleration you can generate is really HUGE for you to stop the racquet without hitting your shoulder non-dominant shoulder OR hard-breaking with your dominant shoulder. Unless you really let it flow… But it might be entirely wrong and just a misinterpretation of how things should work.

I honestly wonder if the modern forehand is anything that should be mimicked by the casual player. I would think a simple back draw back with a slight upward motion like McEnroe or Connors would seem much simpler to master for the casual player with a lot less chance for mishits and errors.
@knotwilg3596
@knotwilg3596 5 месяцев назад
I think the modern forehand should be taught and acquired on the ama level, but without all the irrelevant aspects that make it too complicated. The differences between Djoko and Sinner on display here don't matter at all. If you focus on what they have in common (late/fast and takeback, body involvement, contact in front, 360 finish) you're good to go.
@pedropola882
@pedropola882 3 месяца назад
first of all, these are not modern forehands, they are contemporary, and if one would keep to the technical description they could be called post-modern, and they represent a retrocess from optimal form (biomechanics). And, yes, these forehands should not be mimicked either by competitive players or recreational. But I would be so bold to say: McEnroe did not play tennis. It was something, but not tennis. Of course this is an exageration, but I make it to make a point.

I think so. He seems to have more coil going into the shot. But any amateur getting Djokovic's coil will be very good already.
@jmasked5082
@jmasked5082 Год назад
I think it's important to also throw into consideration the difference of weight in their racquets. Djoko has a very heavy racquet with very high swingweight. It is very hard to meaningfully emulate a stroke without also emulating the weight. The way it drops on the take back is a part of how heavy the racquet is getting as he takes it back and away from his body, vs Sinner whose racquet specs are much lighter, he holds it with way more strength and arms it more, whereas Djoko uses the weight of the racquet to plough through with a more relaxed looking motion and heaps of racquet lag. So it may look like Sinner is absolutely blistering the ball but really Djoko is not very far behind if you look at the stats of their forehand speeds..

Don't you feel it's a bit disingenuous to talk about Djokovic hitting this one forehand harder than sinner? Not only does sinner hit this particular ball with greater net clearance, but Schwartzman is also further back behind the baseline than cilic. On top of that Schwartzman generally does not hit as flat or fast as cilic so the ball Djokovic is hitting likely started with more kinetic energy in the system in the first place. More importantly, even if this specific instance was Djokovic hitting the ball harder, we know that sinner has a MUCH more powerful average forehand than Djokovic, so it kinda comes off as you trying to deceive your audience. I'm not saying that's what you are trying to do. I'm just saying what it looks like. It kinda rubs me the wrong way, if I'm honest. Saying Djokovic has a better forehand because he has much greater control and consistency without making big sacrifices in power is a fine point to make. But trying to imply that there isn't ANY sacrifice in power, even implying that Djokovic generates more power? You make so many convincing points in this video. I hate to see it tarnished, even slightly, by that over reach in the middle of your video.
@2MinuteTennis
@2MinuteTennis 2 года назад
I was simply showing that you can hit djokers type of forehand really hard. So hard, in fact, that it got to the other side faster than sinner’s. I wasn’t saying anything against sinner. I get tons of comments. Ans the comments I usually get say something like “yeah well sinner’s forehand is the new way to hit and it’s because you can hit it harder”. I was addressing those comments before they were even typed in the comment section.

@@2MinuteTennis do you truly believe it's untrue that sinner's technique allows him to hit harder than Djokovic?
