The sound design here is top notch. Really interesting rhythmic textures and timbres evocative of Aphex and Warps late 90's and early 2000 output. I hear alot of Autechre in there. Now to just combine some of those harsh industrial sounding rhythms with a couple of those detuned microtonal lead and pad sounds and you've got your track halfway there.
an honor to hear that man, really appreciate it! It was actually quite a lot of fun to work on them. Hope the patches can inspire people to elaborate on them or maybe just serve as examples what’s possible with the device. Funny that you mention Autechre since i actually never listened to them, will definitely have to do so 😊
Funny you mention Autechre, I heard this kina sound in there as well. from around the same time LFO - Tied Up ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wfdk_EM3kPU.html
I love these preset sounds & especially that you're also honoring the sonorous, warm toned melodic harmonies in RDJ's music as well. I'm currently crafting my own banks of sounds, after taking my time getting to the BS2 update - but wow. These are some Amazing sounds!
Awesome sounds. The AFX Station is blurring the boundaries between a classic analogue synth and a modular due to its many modulation features. It feels to me like it is covering about 80% of what a modular system can deliver in a musical usable manner. Just love it and feel much gratitude to own one. A real keeper.
thank you very much Matt! For me even the BS2 was a new thing couple of months ago and i haven’t thought i would have so much fun with it. Now i know why many people like it 😉
Awesome work, with the lights and especially on how you made the AFX sound mind blowing. Can't wait to receive my unit, but it'll only arrive by the end of next week. Keep the great music on coming!
This is some nasty voodoo shit, I could swore that I was hearing Rubber Johnny in the background :) Extraordinary instrument, bravo Novation (and everyone else included in this project)!
When can I get a keyboard that does this lightshow, not just a projection but actually in the keys? Think about a full-sized key that gave you visual feedback for something like aftertouch amount as an example. Novation, get on it!
Hopefully this project came along with some musical hours spent together with Aphex Twin. As I’m digging your sound I’ve got the hunch that you spent many hours listening to this musical mastermind and adore his sound as much as I do. They chose the right one to contribute To this project. Makes me feel really happy for you!
man, thank you so much for the kind words! That really means a lot to me! Sure, like many others, i was and still am quite influenced by Aphex, among many other great artists out there, so it clearly shows in my musical taste and style. And no, unfortunately this project didn’t include meetings in person, haha 😆 For me, it’s already such a great honor to even being asked to participate, still so stoked about this! I‘m just so happy that i could contribute a tiny bit to this and share it with others.
Such a bummer, but you’re totally right. It would just have been an extra plus to share the room and exchange some words and jam with this legend. Congrats one more time. Maybe I should finally crawl out of my autistic hole and start sharing my work as well 🤔 I think you inspired me... it’s about Time to show people what I am doing, Even if that’s totally not my thing. I’m really shy about stuff like that and spend my time alone with the machines.
@@analogfrog5180 totally get that. Actually i'm quite introvert and totally fine with that. That's why i'm not presenting myself but only the "work" i'm doing. That's a way for me to overcome this timidity. Most importantly, you should feel comfortable and have fun with what you're doing!
Thank you a lot for your answer.
I am getting this in early December. I. Can't. F**King. Wait. I also can't wait until @loopop does a review. (I searched his channel and I couldn't find the Bass Station 2 so one can only hope he does a review for this unit)
Probably not the best place to ask but between the BS2, Minilogue XD and Microfreak, what would be the best synth for edm, deep house, acid and hard tek?
it’s been a while i visited the afxstation, but i think that the overlays are stored within a patch, yes. Definite answer will give you the manual probably! Cheers!
thanks man, it was achieved with a projection mapping software called HeavyM and a little projector facing the AFX Station from above. Hope this helps!
@@PerplexOn Typically those robotic vowely sounds are made by modulating the Filter incredibly fast and cranking up the resonance. If the Envelope also affects the Filter cutoff (more slowly) that helps a lot too. But on the Mono Station the LFO is too slow to do this Afaik. Not sure if they put the same LFO in the BS2 though.
thanks a lot! Actually i have no idea how hard they will be to get. While it’s a „limited“ edition there are no clues about how limited the quantity is 😉
i would say the Bass Station 2 (or AFX Station if you prefer the updated colors) is definitely a great synth to start with! If you're on a tight budget i would look out for a used BS2, they may be more affordable right now and technically identical.
technically, sure. Lucky for you if you're a BS2 owner, you get all the new patches and functions for free. And if you're not, you can decide between this and the limited edition with updated silkscreen and knobs.
can you teach me projection mapping so i can love my synths more and make gorgeous content like this. holy fuck (also this made me buy the afx and as last night im in love with it
@@PerplexOn oh i have no idea about any of that, first of all, thanks for responding, and second, i mean like what is a patch and how did you make one?
a patch is just a custom setting of various available parameters of the machine. Either you or other artists have created these presets that can be loaded into your machine, resulting in different sounds. If you want to create your own one you can take a initial setting of the synth or any other premade patch, tweak knobs and settings to your liking and save it as your very own patch.
thanks man, really appreciate it! You definitely can achieve this kind of sounds with software plugins and your DAW, too, no question. You may just search for sounddesign tutorials that match your current setup to start with. There are even some great free software synths out there, so you don’t have to spend a lot.
Just, wow! I'm not sure how 4:52 is even possible. Sounds like formant synthesis, but there's no formant filter, so I'm guessing there is some sort of C64 S.A.M. style additive craziness going on there?
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it! You’re right, it’s almost vowel like stuff. Actually this surprised me as well. It’s not that i thought „let’s make some vowels“, it more or less happend during the sounddesign process while tweaking random parameters, so it was actually a happy accident, haha 😅 i found it quite interesting how sonically versatile and surprising it is so this patch made its way to the final bunch of patches for the machine. I‘m sure some smart people can exactly explain why it sounds how it sounds but for me it was just fun to explore. Cheers!
@@matthewbucknall8350 really appreciate it man! It’s definitely a really fun machine to play with! Just to let you know, these patches are also available for the Bass Station 2 via novation components, for free! Just in case you can’t get your hands onto an AFX Station
"Too many sheep and not enough shepherds." - Richard D James ??? What is this fascination with various artists within electronica, that causes so many to stagnate within a particular style of another? My creations are nothing special, but they're 100% me, - I'd hate to have spent hours, perhaps days, working on something, for someone to say, - Hey, that sounds just like Jack Dangers. - I understand how we're all influenced by others, but when it just becomes clone-like emulation, I lose all interest. Not having a pop at anyone, least of all Perplex On, I sub to this channel and enjoy the content, - I just always felt the Sheep Vs Shepherds analogy was spot on... especially within the electronica sphere. Love to ALL, feel no hate
Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts! While i do get your point that every artist wants to be recognized for his/her own style and voice, i personally have no problems with people saying my stuff is sounding like artist xy, especially when i‘m highly influenced by this very one (among many others!). Or maybe my ego isn’t just as big enough, quite possible. 😊 But let me assure you that everything i make is 100% myself, too. And a sidenote regarding this project in particular: i nor any other contributing artists i assume ever wanted to „clone-emulate“ a certain RDJ but rather create interesting, inspiring, unusual patches that fit this rather experimental genre while being true to their individual taste and style at the same time. Neither more nor less. Actually i think the electronic music genre is at least if not an even more versatile, multi-layered and complex genre compared to many other musical genres. And not everybody will do „aphexy“ songs with this machine despite it’s named after him 😉 In the end, AFX is a household name that helps raising attention and selling it, and i am absolutely honored that i got the chance to create patches that other people can now experience, too! Cheers!
@@atommachine Too true, - Currently, I blame the internet and social media for most of the stagnation within the sub/counter culture phenomena. - For a long time there was an 11yr cycle that existed within the youth/cultural expression field, that came about after the world wars... It started in '55 with Elvis and prescription drugs like Quaalude's, Valium, opiates etc. In '66 we reached the heights of the psychedelic revolution. '77 saw the birth of Punk, with Speed and Heroin being the substances of choice, - those were the days, yes I'm that old. In '88 we had Acid House, MDMA, - where we inadvertently developed the chemical sound for the chemical compound - LSD. And in '99 the internet came along, and the youth got sidetracked into a virtual world of mediocrity, a world so full of noise, even the innovators have a hard time getting heard... btw, I love this guy's visuals, very bespoke... Not too sure about the synthesizer though, it looks much better without the blue, and the oscillators sound great, - but the filter always feels a bit lacking, - though if I wasn't retired and watching my pennies, I'd probably buy one... There's just too much choice at the moment. stay safe, be well
